Common Questions and Answers about Osteoarthritis and medications

osteoarthritis

513154 tn?1340225289 I have a question about Osteoarthritis and the pain that comes with it. Last November I had 5, 6, and 7 upper vertebra fused together and feel so much better in that way BUT i can't take anti inflammatory medications for my Osteoarthritis, Tylenol doesn't even help a bit and non of the arthritis over the counter meds help either. My question is... is there a non narcotic pain medication that I can take every day? I am 45 years old and very healthy besides my arthritis. thank you!
Avatar n tn I am afraid that I have developed osteoarthritis in my hands, esp. in the thumb joint. I experience pain up to 5 on 1/10 scale, but not swelling. After I ride my bike my hands hurt for several days, maybe the handlebar is too big around. The symptoms developed shortly after I broke my wrist (Collies fracture) two years ago. I realize that if I have this problem it isn't going away. How do I keep the damage to a miminim? I use Ibuprofen for pain with fair results.
8317359 tn?1397621339 They have experimented with just about every pain medication and/or combination of pain medications and I have yet to enjoy one single 24 hour day without pain. I'm currently taking 120mg of Opana ER per day and I still suffer with severe pain 75% of the time. My PCP is now thinking about trying Fentanyl but, that may become an RX insurance problem because Fentanyl is so expensive. Does anyone have any suggestions and is osteoarthritis truly this painful?
Avatar m tn Warm and cool compress on the joint will help reduce the pain and inflammation. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications can be taken. Physiotherapy exercises aimed at strengthening the jaw muscles help. Please discuss with his treating doctors. Take care! The medical advice given should not be considered a substitute for medical care provided by a doctor who can examine you.
Avatar f tn I also took Darvocet and there is nothing else for my pain except the real strong stuff and I am trying to hold off as long as I can before I would take those, I have osteoarthritis in my joints, I need a hip replacement and I have osteoarthritis in my back also, I dont know what to take for pain.
272434 tn?1228607209 I also have carpal tunnel and I have osteoarthritis. Both very painful, and I also need surgery, and I told them not right now. I take a long time to heal, and that alone is enough for me not to have surgery. I also use splints at night, and I have had to cut back on my quilting, but I refuse to stop all together. The osteoarthritis I have in all of my joints as well as RA, I have a triple whammy.
Avatar m tn Please check with your doctor and/or pharmacist before combining any medications and supplements.
Avatar f tn I did take Duloxetine previously for pain (adjunct to the Celebrex) and it did help, but my GP is skeptical that Gabapentin would help even if combined with Duloxetine. Does anyone else have Osteoarthritis and is unable to take NSAIDS and have you found a medication that works? Thanks in advance for your replies.
Avatar f tn Diagnosis of osteoarthritis is confirmed by physical examination and X-rays of the ankle joint. Medications like glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are being used as they are effective in reducing the pain of OA in all joints. Physical therapy plays an important role in the treatment plan of osteoarthritis. If you are not satisfied seeking second opinion will help. Do keep me posted. Take care and regards!
1069378 tn?1255215132 Medications of all forms can be tried like topical, oral, or injectable medications to relieve pain and inflammation .You can try both acupuncture and also synvisc injections before considering surgical treatments like arthroscopy or joint replacement. Take a second opinion and discuss with an expert orthopedician specialized in knee surgery. Take care!
Avatar f tn The weird thing is, I have been on these medications for a couple of years now, and this just started a couple of weeks ago. Obviously I know the effects of suddenly getting off the oxycodone, and withdraw symptoms that are associated with doing this, and I don't have a problem with getting off them if that's what I need to do.
11446628 tn?1418298480 I also have pain in my knee and hands, and my fingers are twisting and have knots. My right knee has had pain and swelling for weeks, and this morning it's too painful to walk. I haven't injured it. Recent blood test didn't report rheumatoid arthritis. So what's going on with my knee, and with my hands?
Avatar n tn The plain truth of the matter is, NO good pain management doctor is just going to prescribe pain meds for anyone without first doing a series of tests and evaluations to see what their problem is.
Avatar m tn Also, she is patient of high blood pressure. She is on bloog sugar medications like Metformin, Glimipride and Telmisartan, Amlodipine tablets for high bp Daily. Avatar f tn I've had mri's of my spine and shows osteoarthritis with bone spurs in cervical thoracic and lumbar. This was done in 2007 (i was 35), now i have this horrible tendonitis in both wrists and i'm on prednisone. Could this be related to the arthritis? i'm seeing an ortho but he doesn't know about the osteoarthritis (i was just rereading my reports and it jumped out at me). What should i expect with this diagnosis?
Avatar f tn I have Osteoarthritis and it is getting worse. I taken Celebrex, Norco, Tramadol and Vicopren. None of these are working. I don't have insurance and go to a public health clinic. They don't seem to know what to do. Could you please advise me on what I can take that will help with the chronic pain and will be inexpensive.
529224 tn?1400648219 The other knee was about to be replaced in 2012 and an emergency came in and my OP was postponed.I took up hill walking, despite it hurt, aquafit twice a week and swimming lengths (not breaststroke!) - which my consultant had suggested before first knee OP, and my knee (despite being in a worse arthritic state than the first knee before OP!) improved - I don't have pain, or instability anymore!
Avatar n tn t tried it myself yet, only because I HATE taking pills, but have heard a few success stories about Glucosamine and Chondroitin. Another thing you can do is start physical therapy. Strengthening the muscles and tendons around the joints helps to slow the degenerative changes.
Avatar m tn I have osteoarthritis in my neck moderate and mild in lower back. Can and adjusment help? will they even do an adjustment me? i seem to be losing sensativity in my legs but dont know if iy du to oa in back nad neck.any help would be great. thank you.
Avatar m tn t expecting that especially @ 32 with a 4 yr old and 7 month old!! Anyways, he adviced pain meds and synvisc-one injections until we couldn't control the pain enough. I tried the injections. I won't lie the are a bit painful. My right one was just uncomfortable. The left one hurt way worse. I have no idea why but it even swelled up and I had to stay off it about 24 hours b/c of all the fluid on it.
Avatar m tn i was also wondering about the osteoarthritis as my dr told me that i have severe degenerative osteoarthritis of the lower spine (I forgot the numbers), hips, left shoulder and both feet. I had major surgery last summer and mesh was used to attach part of my bowel to my spine. My dr figures that this may have jump-started the arthritis issues. Currently i have probs walking, bending and overall it hurts to be on my feet for more than 20 mins at a time.
Avatar f tn Hi, I've not got a diagnosis for my pain, however it is concurrent with symptoms for osteoarthritis. As I've been suffering with pain in my knees, hips, lower back and knuckles for 12 years now I'm not holding out on a diagnosis anytime soon, more so because I know how much the medical comminity seem to despise diagnosing osteoarthritis in anyone below 50, I'm 30 so another 20 years to go before acknowledgement of OA will be given!
Avatar f tn Does osteoarthritis generally cause an elevated Sed Rate and and elevated C-Reactive Protein? Anyone have these tests elevated with your condition? Thanks!
Avatar m tn ‘Line of weight bearing falling anterior to the sacral promontory’ would indicate an abnormal spinal curvature which could be the cause or the result of osteoarthritis. Some degree of osteoarthritis is expected with age which can worsen post-menopause, being overweight, improper posture, lack of physical exercise/ muscle strength, chronic trauma, diabetes etc., which causes degeneration of the joint and associated inflammation that causes pain. The acute injury is unlikely to be related to it.
Avatar f tn You're welcome. I didn't see your post to geminigirl stating you were allergic to Celebrex before I posted. As JayBay said, there are a lot of non-narcotic medicines available for OA. You can probably do a google search on "non-narcotic osteoarthritis medications" and I bet a lot of good websites will pop up with a list of some of the different medications available.
