Common Questions and Answers about Osteoarthritis and gluten

osteoarthritis

Avatar m tn osteoarthritis is a degenerative condition. It is caused by the breakdown of cartilage and is often associated with aging. It can be assisted along the way by injuries. There is no cure for osteoarthritis. Treatments include NSAIDs and pain management, maintaining a normal weight and exercise.
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed in 1997 with Fibromyalgia. I also have severe osteoarthritis, especially in both hands. What am I doing wrong? The doctor told me I'm a very strange case. What's that mean? This discussion is related to TSH declining .
Avatar f tn ve got Fibromyalgia quite severely and cannot walk very far before I need to stop (100 m at the most) I have always loved walking and cycling but since I have developed Fibro I am literally housebound. I am working with physio/hydro- and occupational therapy. I have gained lots and lots of weight.over the years Any ideas of what I could do? I am doing Tai Chi but I don't seem to get past 2 repetitions per exercise (just warming up exercises) before I could scream in agony????????
1710955 tn?1309446473 I was dx with hypothyroidism 3 yrs ago, MS last year, and on Monday was dx with osteoarthritis of my left knee and spine, fibro, AND small fiber neuropathy. My neuro is currently running tests to see if there's an underlying cause for the neuropathy. I'm also losing the natural curvature in my neck. It's actually reversing. I'm currently trying to figure out a plan for that. I'm at such a loss for words. I can't help thinking about all of this.
Avatar f tn I've had mri's of my spine and shows osteoarthritis with bone spurs in cervical thoracic and lumbar. This was done in 2007 (i was 35), now i have this horrible tendonitis in both wrists and i'm on prednisone. Could this be related to the arthritis? i'm seeing an ortho but he doesn't know about the osteoarthritis (i was just rereading my reports and it jumped out at me). What should i expect with this diagnosis?
Avatar f tn I have Osteoarthritis and it is getting worse. I taken Celebrex, Norco, Tramadol and Vicopren. None of these are working. I don't have insurance and go to a public health clinic. They don't seem to know what to do. Could you please advise me on what I can take that will help with the chronic pain and will be inexpensive.
529224 tn?1400648219 The other knee was about to be replaced in 2012 and an emergency came in and my OP was postponed.I took up hill walking, despite it hurt, aquafit twice a week and swimming lengths (not breaststroke!) - which my consultant had suggested before first knee OP, and my knee (despite being in a worse arthritic state than the first knee before OP!) improved - I don't have pain, or instability anymore!
513154 tn?1340225289 I have a question about Osteoarthritis and the pain that comes with it. Last November I had 5, 6, and 7 upper vertebra fused together and feel so much better in that way BUT i can't take anti inflammatory medications for my Osteoarthritis, Tylenol doesn't even help a bit and non of the arthritis over the counter meds help either. My question is... is there a non narcotic pain medication that I can take every day? I am 45 years old and very healthy besides my arthritis. thank you!
Avatar n tn t tried it myself yet, only because I HATE taking pills, but have heard a few success stories about Glucosamine and Chondroitin. Another thing you can do is start physical therapy. Strengthening the muscles and tendons around the joints helps to slow the degenerative changes.
Avatar m tn I have osteoarthritis in my neck moderate and mild in lower back. Can and adjusment help? will they even do an adjustment me? i seem to be losing sensativity in my legs but dont know if iy du to oa in back nad neck.any help would be great. thank you.
Avatar m tn t expecting that especially @ 32 with a 4 yr old and 7 month old!! Anyways, he adviced pain meds and synvisc-one injections until we couldn't control the pain enough. I tried the injections. I won't lie the are a bit painful. My right one was just uncomfortable. The left one hurt way worse. I have no idea why but it even swelled up and I had to stay off it about 24 hours b/c of all the fluid on it.
Avatar n tn I am afraid that I have developed osteoarthritis in my hands, esp. in the thumb joint. I experience pain up to 5 on 1/10 scale, but not swelling. After I ride my bike my hands hurt for several days, maybe the handlebar is too big around. The symptoms developed shortly after I broke my wrist (Collies fracture) two years ago. I realize that if I have this problem it isn't going away. How do I keep the damage to a miminim? I use Ibuprofen for pain with fair results.
Avatar m tn i was also wondering about the osteoarthritis as my dr told me that i have severe degenerative osteoarthritis of the lower spine (I forgot the numbers), hips, left shoulder and both feet. I had major surgery last summer and mesh was used to attach part of my bowel to my spine. My dr figures that this may have jump-started the arthritis issues. Currently i have probs walking, bending and overall it hurts to be on my feet for more than 20 mins at a time.
Avatar f tn Does osteoarthritis generally cause an elevated Sed Rate and and elevated C-Reactive Protein? Anyone have these tests elevated with your condition? Thanks!
Avatar f tn Hi,thanks in advance for any responses...much appreciated and my drs. do not know. I've been menopausal since Nov.2011(my last period) and I've been diag.hypothyr.about 3-5 yrs. I'm currently on estrogen patch+progesterone+150 mcg synthroid. Wondering if anyone has had experience with hip (actually where the leg and hip meet)pain that disturbs their sleep? Also on another note wondering the best labs to target any such problems, whether hormone or thyroid related.
Avatar m tn The osteoarthritis may progress slowly over time. Strengthening the muscles that support the neck and cervical spine may lesson symptoms of pain and discomfort. ~•~ Dr. Parks This answer is not intended as and does not substitute for medical advice. 272434 tn?1228607209 I also have carpal tunnel and I have osteoarthritis. Both very painful, and I also need surgery, and I told them not right now. I take a long time to heal, and that alone is enough for me not to have surgery. I also use splints at night, and I have had to cut back on my quilting, but I refuse to stop all together. The osteoarthritis I have in all of my joints as well as RA, I have a triple whammy.
Avatar f tn C5 C6 starting to compress, osteoarthritis in hips, back and neck, nothing new at my age. This has been going on for few weeks and not wearing off. Any ideas pls?
Avatar f tn I suffer with fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, regenerative disc disease and a couple of other annoying maladies. Recently I have been experiencing more severe pain which is accompanied by hives. Is this something I need to bring up to my doctors or is it just coincidental?? What could be causing the hives. They itch and the area that hurts gets warm. I'm wondering if one has anything to do with the other?
1843491 tn?1322859611 Gluten is the protein found most commonly in wheat, barley, rye, triticale (a hybrid type of grain that is a cross between wheat and oats), and most oats. Oats that are certified as gluten free are to be treated as if they have gluten. The explanation on that one is tricky, but it has to do with the peculiarity of oats to cross pollinate with grains that contain gluten.
Avatar f tn I add my own welcome to G-grrrl's. Like her, I see you have been through a lot but don't see a clear link between the picture you share and what I know about MS. If your Celiac diagnosis is based on a small bowel biopsy then I wouldn't think there is any question but that it is correct. I hope you haven't given up on the gluten free diet. I know that gluten can "hide" in many places and some people are very sensitive.
Avatar f tn Okay, ya ready? You have 3 possibilities here: - celiac disease - non-celiac gluten intolerance - wheat allergy. It gets complicated because many studies and scholarly texts use "celiac disease" and "gluten intolerance" interchangably...they're not the same thing. Celiac is an autoimmune disease. Once you have one autoimmune (Hashi's), you're more prone to developing another (celiac). So, yes, there is a connection. Celiac can be tested for...
Avatar m tn The gluten issue is further complicated because there is both celiac disease (autoimmune gluten intolerance) and and non-celiac gluten intolerance. With celiac disease, antibodies attack tissue in the gut making it progressively hard to absorb nutrients. Your doctor probably did an antibody test for celiac, However, the blood test is not conclusive, only a small intesting biopsy is conclusive.
1099201 tn?1338180918 No, it's not true that all people with Hashi's have a gluten intolerance, or must follow a g/f diet. There are many people with Hashi' s who are not intolerant to gluten and there are a lot of people who do NOT have Hashi's that ARE intolerant. Since it's quite likely to get more than one autoimmune, it's not unusual that many people with Hashi's have celiac disease.
268911 tn?1213744781 Read on the lable and if it says "wheat, barley, rye, flour, vinegar" it has gluten in it. It is also very common for people with Celiacs disease to also be lactose intollerant. Cut out all dairy and wheat products and see what happens. This will be a MAJOR life change for you. Baiscally you will be limited to fresh fruit and vegetables, beef, pork, chicken and fish.
Business woman2 Most of the tablet forms will contain Lactose and Gluten. Some of the extended release capsules do not contain neither Gluten nor Lactose. It will help me very much, if I know the dosage form and strength. We might be able to find you a supplier that do not use Lactose and Gluten in its Venlafaxine. Thanks and be well.
