I was on sick pay (employment and support allowance) off jobcentre for majority of my pregnancy due to stress and anxiety. Dont think you'd get it when you recieve maternity pay and not sure if it affects it. I get maternity allowance benefit because I made a couple pound less than the amount needed to quality.
Disability allowance has become very strict indeed over the last couple of years. You can blame the ones who abused the system for that, claiming they are too ill to cope and living/drawing their benefits in spanish resorts. Basically you have to be very limited physically, such as not being able to walk more than a few yards before being in discomfort. Discomfort can include shortness of breath. It is not unusual to be refused three or four times in a row, but keep appealing.
It is hard on social security, but you should be able to claim disability living allowance, and if you need help with anything, I believe it has to be about 5 hours a day, then you should get carers allowance. I would go to your local citizens advice bureau and inquire. They can get the relevant forms sent to you. I warn you, it takes them months to come to a decision.
You must be unable to perform your old job with accommodations for your illness or any job in the US economy that you are qualified for due to your medical disability. In others words you must be totally disabled and your disability must last for at least one year or result in death to qualify as being disabled.

With osteoarthritis you will experience flare ups and then things will settle for a while and then flare up again.
I suggest you make an appointment with your doctor to refer you for physiotherapy. The doctor may also prescribe medication to calm the spasm (like Diazepam) and pain relief.

Social security benefits are based not on what you've had done or IF you SHOULD be well enough for work, they are based on your physical and mental ability to work overal.
Regardless of angioplasty, valve replacement or whatever, if you still feel very ill, then obviously this is a disability. I'm not sure if depression is classed as an illness, but if not, it should be.

The osteoarthritis may progress slowly over time. Strengthening the muscles that support the neck and cervical spine may lesson symptoms of pain and discomfort.

Received some interesting info from a friend that may help the TN community about the Social Security Compassionate Allowance. My diet consists of a high protein diet my major problem for my weight is unable to exercise due to disability of osteoarthritis in my spine knees and both feet. When living on a disability pension going to a weight loss spa is out of the question buying food and paying normal every day bills is just affordable .

It took me two years and every ounce of energy to get Disability Living Allowance. Appeals, Tribunals, paper everywhere BUT I did it. As long as you have the funds, an attorney will be a great help. Keep fighting!
If you donote mind me asking your age? I have friend that is 50 yrs. old and has Hepitius C, Osteoarthritis and is Biopolar and an enlarged heart. She has been turned down twice. I hear if you are over 55 it is easier to get accepted. If you are turned down you can hire a disability laywer that works off 25% back pay (from day you apply till day you are approved). I hear in some states you can hire a lawyer from day one but inTexas you have to be turned down once to hire laywer.
