Common Questions and Answers about Open heart operation live

operation

Avatar f tn Many individuals following open heart surgery have a memory problem for about 6 months post operation. Open heart surgery puts the individual on heart and lung machine so the fibrosis is probably not an issue during the operation. The main problem with the heart is the valve orifice and that can be corrected without open heart surgery (sometimes). The aorta regurgitation can be the cause of shortness of breath as well as the pulmonary issue. What is the operation expectation.
Avatar n tn my sister had open heart surgery.they had to replace one of the main values.butsince she has had the operation her legs swell up.what causes that.
Avatar m tn My Husband has a blood clot in his heart and 3 blooked arteries can,t have an operation too dangerous is now eating well and learning to walk.
Avatar f tn An aortic aneurysm repair on an 84 year-old would be a high-risk, high-reward proposition. It's open-heart surgery, and it's more technically difficult than a lot of other types of heart surgery. The outcome could go either way, and that's if you could even find a surgeon who would want to do it. Her best chance would be to go to a major heart center that has a thoracic aortic surgery program.
Avatar m tn Apparently, medication keeps open the ductus arteriosus and provides a bypass. Or there has been an operation when your friend was a baby. Congenital cardiovascular defects, most of which involve deformed or missing heart valves, are detected in almost three to four percent of all live births.
Avatar f tn My husband is 31 years old & just went through open heart surgery to repair his mitral valve. He had severe regurgitation. Since before he went in for the surgery he has been taking Cardizem 120 & even after surgery they kept him on the medication with 1 baby aspirin a day. They said they would monitor him for the next few months and decide if he can come off or not. Since then he had his echo cardiogram & they reported his heart muscle function has decreased.
595144 tn?1219229276 I had a heart attack two months ago with two stents being necessary. At the time it was found that a heart mumur indicated minor regurgitation due to a biscuspid valve. Further tests showed a dilated ascending aorta measuring 49mm. On seeing a heart surgeon today he suggested just watching the dilation and checking each 6 months. He seemed inclined not to use a metal valve and wanted to delay the inevitable operation.
Avatar m tn My friends father recently suffered a heart attack and was advised to undergo angiography. The test showed 100% blockage in two of his arteries and was recommended open heart surgery. He is 61 years old and has suffered from hypertension and high blood pressure for the past 3 years. He has lived with the fear of doctors and surgeries all his life and is now strongly refusing to undergo the surgery. No amount of convincing from the doctor or the family seems to help.

Avatar n tn There are different risks associated with different procedures. Is it Angioplasty ? Or an open heart? Also, what hospital are you going to? Each hospital has different risk factors as well. I'm from the Indianapolis area and have heard that of the Indianapolis Hospitals Community Health Network is one of the better ones you can go to! Good luck with your search!
Avatar m tn I consider what you describe to be bypass surgery, not open heart surgery, that is your heart was not opened. I could be wrong on that "fine" point, but to your cold limbs question I can say I had open heart surgery to repair my mitral valve and to do a mini-maze procedure on the inside of my heart to try to stop atrial fibrillation. This was done in November of 2007, and I have not noticed any increased sensitivity to cold temperatures or colder hands/feet...
Avatar m tn In humans, valvular disease with secondary congestive heart failure would be treated with open-heart surgery to repair or replace the valve, but that that is very rarely done in dogs. In fact, valve replacement can't be in dogs at all, as far as I know. In very rare circumstances, valve repair can be done, IF it is the mitral valve that is the problem and IF everything else is right for a repair job.
Avatar f tn What surgery did you have? I believe Bypass i also called open heart surgery, but I don't know why. I had mitral valve surgery at age 67 and had none of the postop symptoms, so my experience says only you are have more trouble than I did. I suppose my sternum may be a little uneven and there are times when I wish the doctor had used a straight edge to cut me open as the long vertical cut is on a bit of an angle compared to the perpendicular.
Avatar f tn These days, all doctors know that their patients have hit the internet before seeing them. However, unless you are medically educated, it is important to believe that cardiac specialists have studied their subject for years and very likely know more than you do. No joke, and they have no interest in fooling your or harming your child.
Avatar f tn At 93, a major open heart operation is not a very desirable option, especially if his heart is weak. The Lasix helps get the excess water out of his system making it easier for his heart to work while lowering his BP. The Lipitor is a cholesterol med which he is taking to control his lipid profile and keep his arteries clear. How good is your father's overall health? Also, do you know what his EF% was?
329165 tn?1515471990 I have to go for Nissen op soon but I was told that they would not be able to do it keyhole like they normally do, due to the 2 open-heart surgeries that I've had - scar tissue. Avatar f tn Hi im a 27 years old guy last year I had open heart surgery to do a mitral valve repair.
1303001 tn?1272992360 Sometimes Doctors refer artificial hearts as being ventricle assist devices which are put inside the chambers of the heart to assist the pumping. The good thing with this is that you keep the original heart and the heart rate can still change, which I don't believe a mechanical heart can. Mechanical hearts have been used to keep a patient alive until a donor is hopefully found. I know there has been a lot of research in artificial hearts in the US and Japan, using animal tissue.
