There were indications of thickening of the stomach wall. I was started on Omeprazole. The Omeprazole did nothing to help. Today I had an Upper Endoscopy. Everything looked great. A biopsy was done to see if there is an underlying cause to the thickening. The Doctor doing the endoscopy told me that even if he had found something he didn’t think it would have anything to do with my pain… I am to a point where I feel like I am going insane.

I have been on omeprazole for 4 months straight, and it does not seem to help my problems. I was diagnosed with GERD, Barrett's esophagus, and gastritis. Although I take the pill daily, many of my symptoms remain. (Pain in upper right quadrant, sometimes burning, difficulty eating, limited diet). I go a few weeks with a little improvement, then the symptoms flare up. When I contact my Dr., he tells me to just continue the medication.

I took Aciphex for many years, then switched to omeprazole, when insurance refused to pay for Aciphex...... had to go to the 40 mg caps for some time. Once my thyroid levels began to come in line, I stopped the omeprazole....... now, I take it only when I eat something that causes acid reflux (usually, eating too close to bedtime)...... BTW -- I do hope you aren't treating your thyroid, based only on TSH.......

The ER sent me home with omeprazole. I saw my PCP the following week and he put me on Nexium (I am still taking it). He also ordered an abdominal US. US results: limited pancreatic tail visualization. The visualized portions of the pancreas appeared unremarkable. Findings suggesting a tiny gallstone that was not mobile near the neck of the gallbladder with a negative sonographic Murphy sign. This could also potentially represent a sludge concretion. The shadowing was not distinct.

Since that attack I have been plagued with continuous upper abdomal discomfort, gurgling, wind and pain on both right and left side immediately under the breast. I even have shap chest pain. I wonder if I suffer from SOD and if so does anyone else have these symptoms. They often resemble symptoms of hiatus hernia, indigestion and heartburn.

suffering from severe trapped wind/bloating as soon as i lie down in bed,have to take bicarb of soda,which takes a while to work,i dont get to sleep until 2-4am& exhausted.have had gall bladder removed & endopscopy for this problem to no avail.these are what ive tried ; keeping a food diary(no pattern) accupressure,massage,mebverine,remegel,colpermine,buscopan,gaviscon,mint tea,ginger tea,gripe water,charcoal,domperidon,plain boiled water!

I had read a post a while back about SOD and how it mimics Cyclic Vomiting. Can someone please give me some input on what SOD is and in what way it mimics Cyclic or if these two syndromes are in any way related. It would be greatly appreciated. I have a friend that has a son that has been dignosed with cyclic but when I saw the post as first mentioned I read that SOD very well could mimic cyclic. If not SOD is anybody aware of any other syndromes to look for that might mimic cyclic symptoms?

It actually has the same active ingredient as Prilosec, but without the dairy and has sodium bicarb as a buffer. It is approved for Pediatric use, but I can't find the exact ages.

t suggested, find another doc who understands SOD. SOD can only be diagnosed with manometry. If the pressures are raised it's the only time that a sphincterotomy should be done - and pressures can only be measured via manometry.

It sounds a lot like gallbladder issues especially when you mention that the diary and fried shrimp caused a lot of problems. Many people can have gallbladder-like issues and all the tests can be normal, so it can be a difficult thing to try to track down. Have you considered following a very low fat diet to see if over time it will help? There is also another condition that could be underlying some of the gallbladder-like discomfort that some have.

It makes me wonder if your current Gastroenterologist got his medical degree out of a cereal box, because SOD is a narrowing of the valve that channels bile and pancreatic juices. The main treatment I've seen for that is to widen the valve surgically to prevent the bile from backing up and causing pain. A scary prospect, I know, but so is living in agony with no relief for 2 more years.

I have noticed you have written on SOD. I was wondering if that is what I may be suffering from. I do not have pain though, only extreme pressure under both rib cages and the middle of my sternum. I have exhausted all tests with the exception of ERCP exam. I am able to get positional relief from my symptoms when I lay flat on my stomach or on either side. The symptoms are constant and never completely go away.

Are you working with a doc who is very familiar with SOD? The only way to definitvely to diagnose SOD is via an ERCP with manometry.

These do not guarantee showing SOD, but there are two types of SOD that can be indicated by checking these levels. The only true way to DX SOD is via ERCP with manometry which should only be done by top experts in the country. I agree with CalGal....SOD can be the beginning of a long road pain, although some have luck with medical treatment (meds) and surgery.

Check with the SOD group at yahoo - good people, good information. You need to be working iwth a SOD specialist to find out IF you have it, and if so, what type. In the meantime, have you discussed using either high doses of anti-spasm meds, or calcium channel blockers or even nitroglycerin to see if it will help? Do you also know that narcotic-based meds can make things worse?

It can be very difficult to find a doc that knows of SOD. Much like that Mystery Diagnosis show on DH, most SOD patients go through a lot of problems while they are trying to figure out what is going on. where are you guys from? You need to find a GI who specializes in diseases of the pancreas, or at least knows of SOD and can refer you to someone who does. Major centers that I trust are in North Carolina, Minnesota and Indiana.

I am scheduled for a ercp in two weeks. I am a type 3 sod and am quite nervous if anyone could give me advice on if this is a good idea I wood apreciate it. I live in pain daily. I have five kids I am divorced and cannot work and now live with my parents because I lost my job and home because of this illness. If anyone has suffered with this I could use help in knowing what you did to get help.

However, I discussed this with my doc and she said due to the fact that the HIDA scan revealed an issue with the gall bladder it is not SOD as SOD is diagnosed when all tests come back normal and my HIDA scan did not. I have had many docs tell me many and very different diagnosis so any ideas, suggestions or comments are greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!!

Following a valve replacement and triple bypass I was discharged from Hospital with a number of drugs and a new one being Omeprazole. I did not know why it was prescribed but after a number of months taking it I decided after discussion with my Doctor to stop taking it. A few months later through the night I got this terrible chest pain on a scale of 1-10 I guess it was 7-8.

At first my wife had urinary infection, few weeks later she started to have fever and stomach problems, the docter told her it was a gastroenteritis. I bought her omeprazole and gave her amoxicilline, that worked. She felt fine, but few weeks later she had urinary infection symptoms again. The doctor gave her antibiotics again, that helped her.

I have GERD and a hiatal hernia and have been taking omeprazole twice a day every day for a few months (I had been on Prevacid for several years before the omeprazole but insurance won't cover it any more). If your main symptom is burping, I would try going off of the omeprazole and switching to gas-x or some other type of gas relief medicine. As long as you aren't having a lot of problems with heartburn or acid reflux, you would probably be fine to discontinue using the omeprazole.

is omeprazole a nercotic pain killer? i know some medications that may b addicting so i thought i would double check..also i had seen that u can take in an i.v is this true and if so how?
