Omeprazole long term use

Common Questions and Answers about Omeprazole long term use

prilosec

Avatar m tn I am a woman in her late 30's. I have been taking omeprazole for 2 years now. I was instructed to take it by a ENT doctor for healing of my esophagus due to acid erosion(scarring) caused by silent reflux. (Diagnosed via endoscopy) I have noticed a decrease in hunger, lack of "growling" of the stomach. Has anyone else experienced this? Is long term use of omeprazole really safe?
Avatar n tn Long-term use of Proton Pump Inhibitors can cause or exacerbate Osteoporosis, chest pain, distended stomach, nausea, diarrhea/constipation, abdominal pain, flatulence, headache & trouble swallowing. They can also interfere with the absorption of other drugs. As you can see, most of the side effects appear to be gastrointestinal, which means we have to be aware of whether our symptoms are coming from the Reflux/Barrett's, etc.
Avatar n tn Prescription omeprazole comes as a delayed-release capsule, and packets of delayed-release (long-acting) granules for suspension (to be mixed with liquid) to take by mouth. Nonprescription (over-the-counter) omeprazole comes as a delayed-release capsule or tablet to take by mouth. The delayed-release capsules and the granules should be taken at least 1 hour before a meal. They are usually taken once a day before a meal but may be taken twice a day when used with other medications to eliminate H.
Avatar n tn My mother was on long term acid blocker nexium (similar to prilosec (omeprazole) but more powerful) and these were some of the dozens of symptoms that she no longer suffers with since stopping nexium... severe major clinical depression, severe anxiety, severe constant fungal infections, homocysteine in imminent heart attack range, severe angina pain, severe stomach pain (nexium worsened her gastritis), sky high blood pressure - given less than 5 years to live by an international specialist.
Avatar n tn i dont know if these are possible long term effects of the drugs or something else. everyone keeps saying im having anxiety attacks but these feelings come when i am calm and seem very serious. if anyone has any advice on whats going on ,whether drug related or not,, or any advice on good doctors to go to PLEASE let me know immediatly.
Avatar n tn it will cause no harm to u if taken for a short span. Though long term use is also not hepatotoxic but since its metabolism takes place in liver i won't advice it in advanced liver diseases. But healthy hep b individuals can take it without a single concern, its a good drug and enlisted in WHO's essential drug list.
Avatar f tn They certainly hear all the negative media coverage damning the prescription and use of long term opiates. If we influence or change one person's negative attitude towards chronic pain and its management than we are fighting the war against us! Yes the War against Us, Against Chronic Pain Patients. You should not be shamed or harassed into this position, "stop the mess and live in constant pain." Taking your husband to your next appt along with educating him may be beneficial.
Avatar m tn The only reason that I ask is that I've heard on of the long-term side effects on dxm use is being a bit lathargic. I'm that way now and the VA did an MRI of my brain and found that my adrenal glad had begun to shrink so, it wasn't producing enough of the thyroid hormone.....I can already tell I'm got some defects from the long term use in my cognitive abilities. I'm down to 18 pills day. 1 pill every two days. The morning w/draws have pretty much stopped.
