Avatar f tn I have the same problem which I, too, thought might be caused by Omeprazole. I did find, like CalGal, a link between Omeprazole and a cough, and it was also causing itchy skin down my spine area. Changing my PPI to Lansoprazole recently has not made the slightest difference, and I continue to cough all day and all night, a dry, irritating cough. I also have gastritis, oesophagitis, a Hiatus hernia, none of which had been symptomatic other than nausea, and a lack of desire to eat.
Avatar f tn A whole week later and I never cough any more. My advice is, if the cough is a quick onset and there is no reason for it, check your home first for anything that could cause an allergy.
Avatar f tn I have GERD and a hiatal hernia and have been taking omeprazole twice a day every day for a few months (I had been on Prevacid for several years before the omeprazole but insurance won't cover it any more). If your main symptom is burping, I would try going off of the omeprazole and switching to gas-x or some other type of gas relief medicine. As long as you aren't having a lot of problems with heartburn or acid reflux, you would probably be fine to discontinue using the omeprazole.
Avatar f tn Afrin is the original name brand for oxymetazoline. Never use it for longer than 3 days at a time and then off for three days. You can rotate if needed. There are a number of other meds a dr can prescribe to help control your symptoms if you really suspect allergies to be the cause. If that doesn't help your symptoms you can try OTC acid reflux meds like Pepcid, Zantac (omeprazole) and many other options.
Avatar f tn I'm currently taking lexapro for anxiety & depression and Omeprazole for Gerd and just found out I'm 4 weeks pregnant. My doctor said the benefIt's outweigh the risks but I'm reading some really scary defects online and I'm wondering if anyone here has had good/bad experiences with them?
Avatar f tn When doing some reading it came up that a vitamin b-12 defiency (leading to anemia) can be caused by taking omeprazole long term... I have taken omeprazole 20mg 1x a day for over a year as a preventative measure since I take so much indomethacin (I don't have GERD) So.... could I be vitamin b-12 deficient due to taking omeprazole?? I also read that b-12 deficiencies can cause canker sores... which I have begun to have again (I haven't had one for four years) Anyways...
Avatar n tn Hi, I've had this cough for 3 months, the first 4 days i couldn't sleep because there was just a never ending amount of mucus in my throat, a tickle, even the cough medicine didn't help because the tickle wouldn't stop. I saw my pulmonary doctor who performed a spirometry and it fev 1 120% of normal with no indications of anything, all the other results were also in the normal range. Chest xray normal. Sinus ct scan normal.
Avatar m tn t see anything she thought would cause the cough. ENT tried increasing the omeprazole to 80 mg. (40 mg. 2 times a day) for GERD with no change in my cough and now is treating me with QVal inhaler thinking it could be my lungs. Cough is better, however I've developed a feeling of having a lump in my throat and I have been burping a lot, especially after taking the omeprazole. I also have been waking up in the middle of the night drenched in sweat.
Avatar m tn My 4 year old son has been prescribed 20mg omeprazole for unknown stomach pain. I heard that PPIs such as this can increase the risk of pneumonia and he has a horrible chest cold. cough right now, should I discontinue taking this medication until this passes? Are the chances of it turning into pneumonia greater if he is on omeprazole? Or is this risk factor only for prolong use?
449683 tn?1211440372 In this condition acid reflux back in food pipe and irritates throat causing chronic cough. Drugs like omeprazole, pantoprazole etc are prescribed for 4- 6 weeks. Other rare possibility is round worm infestation, commonly seen in developing world. Thsi condition is diagnosed by stool test and drugs like albendazole are prescribed (single dose suffcient). Avatar m tn ve read through most of the comments about tickly cough. I have had symptoms from November to May for the last 5 years. It starts with an infection which leaves me with this awful cough. One thing which has helped me sleep at night is to have a hot water bottle on my chest. Add some olbas oil to the bottle cover and this has helped me sleep. Unfortunately I still have the cough but this is one of my coping techniques. No-one says how they cope with this at work.
Avatar m tn You will need to take a combination of medications (under medical supervision) like a proton pump inhibitor such as omeprazole, lansoprazole or pantoprazole empty stomach in the morning and an antacid gel after meals for complete relief. Possibility of H pylori infection too should be looked into by a carbon urea breath test and a combination antibiotic tried. Many a times a persisting H pylori infection can be the cause behind acidity not responding to treatment.
Avatar f tn I have seen a nurse practitioner that reccomended allergy meds and omeprazole. This did not help in the least. Two ENTs both also reccomended omeprazole and nasal spray, still didn't work. They each put a camera down my throat and see some sign of acid reflux but it sounds like both of them were not convinced that's what is causing this feeling to this degree. I have been referred to GI specialist.
Avatar f tn I have a bad cough that causes me to gag and come very close to throwing up. It seems to start with a tickle which causes me to cough. Its not deep down near my lungs, this is in the area of gaging. I have had every test in the book. they couldn,t find a thing. They finally put me under so that they could go into my throat and esopagus and even into my stomach and came up with a clean bill of health.
Avatar f tn Coughing is set off when I eat, laugh, tilt head back, bend over, gonoutside in cold or in an overheated environment. Cough comes with grainy mucus that cannot cough up and the blockage causes laryngospasms. Eventually swallow the mucus. (Have tried all traditional thinning methods - hydration, medication, natural remedies). Voice permanently hoarse. Top left of throat permanently sore (poss vocal fold?) and throat generally is tickly but no infection there.
Avatar m tn Talk to your GP about the other causes for cough in the meantime you could try warm salt water gargles and breathing exercises. Regards.

Avatar n tn Would it be advisable to see an EMT or Respiratory Specialist for a second opinion. I am 62 yrs old and in excellent health other than the cough. Thank you for any suggestions.
Avatar n tn Now I have developed a chronic cough for the last 2 mos. It used to happen only at night when I lay down but now it happens during the day. I spray my throat with chloraseptic as it has lidocaine in it. The last week I woke up with terrible throat pain and swelling in my lymph notes at the sides of my throat. I couldn't talk at all for 2 days and that made it go away. But the cough is still there. I am really getting concerned.
Avatar f tn The doc just increased my Omeprazole to taking two 40mg twice a day. They tell me the cough/wheezing can last for months, as it will take time for my increased meds to help the situation. I'm coughing so much, of course it is worse at the evening and early morning. I have missed 3 days of work this week alone. I have never had this happen as a result of my Esophagus issues. Is there any other remedy that can help eliminate or lessen the amount of wheezing and congestion and coughing I have?
Avatar f tn I do have a few other silent reflux symptoms like clearing throat, dry cough and recently light sore or scratchy throat, but from what I've read the "lump" from silent reflux doesn't go away after swallowing. It does seem to get a little better after taking omeprazole 20, but it is still happening. I read a lot of people with a lump but mine isn't a lump. Any ideas?
Avatar f tn I think you can increase the dose to 20mg/day for omeprazole for better effect. You should take smaller meals. Avoid food at least 2 hours before bedtime. Avoid too much of caffeine. Costochondritis, you should attempt to treat by local analgesics and hot fomentation. Your doctor can advice some pain killers that will not increase the acidity. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
Avatar f tn He tried Doubling up Claritin and Tesslin Pearls, next it was omeprazole, honey with cinnamon, and a strong antihistamine, and then a breathing test (I don’t have asthma) and now an inhaler. Once in a while for a few hours I don’t have a cough, but it always returns with a vengeance. Day or night it never stops for long. The other night the tickle started and I gagged and threw up on the spot. No warning. Just wondering if anyone knows what’s wrong with me.
Avatar n tn I have had a metallic taste in my mouth for the past 5 months with a bad cough. When I go to bed I have the additional problem of all sorts of funny noises, whistles coming from my chest. My doctor has given me very strong antibiotics but it still persists.
Avatar f tn I've went to the doctor. He said it s GERD from the symptoms I'd described to help m. He check my throat by looking at the back of it with his light. He prescribed me Omeprazole 20mg. Also every once n awhile I cough up tonsils stones. Idk.....hope its not cancerous. Hope it's something that can be cured!!!
