Avatar f tn I have been taking Omeprazole (Prilosec) since year 2000. I am concerned about calcium absorption and bone loss and would like to wean from it. Is bone loss a legitimate concern? My last bone density showed osteopenia. This discussion is related to <a href='/posts/show/1247834'>Weaning Off Prilosec</a>.
757597 tn?1315801812 Within two months after discontinuation of omeprazole, notable improvements in hemoglobin level and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) were observed in both patients, and iron absorption was significantly increased in the patient who underwent absorption testing. In a case review of patients with hereditary hemochromatosis treated at one institution, investigators observed a reduced requirement for maintenance phlebotomy in seven patients following initiation of PPI therapy (mean 2.
Avatar f tn Omeprazole lowers stomach acid essential for absorption of nutrients. The number of nutrient deficiencies that list fatigue as a symptom are numerous but include iron, vitamin B12, and magnesium. The newest warning out for PPI's like omeprazole is magnesium deficiency. Studies found deficiency within 1 year of taking the drug however a few showed deficiency within 3 months.
Avatar m tn I'm a male, 32 yo and I'm about to undergo cholesterol, triglyceride and hdl tests. I forgot to mention to my physician that I'm currently taking omeprazole. I just learned that it may affect the tests, how long should I stop taking this drug before I undergo the lab tests?
Avatar f tn Was not heartburn was not Gerd like symptoms. Any rate she put me on omeprazole. Just this year I weaned myself off of it at my endocrinologist urgings. The reason being as he explained it was to allow the production of stomach acid to help with the absorption of medication‘s that are much needed. Basically his comment was “any day that you take omeprazole is a day that your medication is not going to help you” and in all fairness to him I had already read some articles about that.
Avatar f tn My consultant has taken me off omeprazole and replaced it with ranitidine due to the fact that my magnesium is low, and is making my calcium low too. Has anyone else had experience of this change, and if so, how has your body reacted to it.
Avatar f tn I can only assume I have IBS my mother has it and had same issues. I have acid reflux and been taking Omeprazole for 10 years it works great for that. But I get trapped wind a lot this past week but my pain is mostly dull never bend over in pain or cant function. One thing happend today while I was searching web for my answer and it brought me to this informative forum. I keep notes on all my pain, gas, BM , Food intake and drinks and meds dates and times.
Avatar f tn Low iron could be due to poor intake, loss from body as happens in acidity and GERD, rectal polyps etc, due to improper absorption or due to storage disorders. Also you need to get a pheripheral blood smear done for your mother to know the RBC count, structure and whether there is cytopenia (general decrease in cell count). The renal function and liver function needs to be checked as also electrophoresis of hemoglobin to know whether there is thalasemia trait or sickle cell anemia.
Avatar n tn Is it possible to have a reverse reaction to Nexium / omeprazole? It never really made the symptoms of my recently diagnosed hiatal hernia caused reflux (lump in throat, mostly) go away. It seemed to help for 2 weeks, but after 1 month it seemed to aggravate GERD symptoms. I am reading a lot on the subject, experimenting with diet and relaxation and the occasional spoonful of Maalox. I relate to the person who said they felt fine until after the endoscopy.
Avatar f tn You could be suffering from are suffering from ‘benign intracranial hypertension’(BIH). This happens due to impaired CSF absorption. A generalized throbbing headache worst felt in the morning and last thing at night. This headache is generally relieved on standing (consistent with raised intracranial pressure). It is aggravated by straining, coughing or a change in position (so exercise can worsen it).
Avatar f tn I showed to my GP, and she said it is because of my digestive tract, probably a B vitamin deficiency(I have GERD reflux therefore the omeprazole I take interferes with absorption of the vitamins of group B).That's when some buds started to be more and more enlarged in this patch, so much that I can actually feel the single swollen red taste bud.
Avatar n tn My doctor and specialty pharmacist said for me to use something like Tums or the equivalent because it is calcium carbonate which will not interfere with the drugs or drug absorption. I use generic calcium carbonate tablets. They look like Tums, but are cheaper. They work.
460830 tn?1347219306 I am taking several meds (mostly OTC/Vitamins) at different times of the day; Am I taking them at the right times? The Zyrtec makes me sleepy, so I take it at night...I suspect that the Lisinopril may be making me sleepy, too, or maybe slightly light-headed (?), but I still take it in the morning; Here is my list: Morning - Lisinopril, fish oil cap, Vitamin C, Calcium chew (with Vitamin D and Vitamin K added), Flonase. Noon - Multivitamin (Centrum Silver generic) and Vitamin A cap.
Avatar m tn It is as if the antibiotics effected the stomach lining, perhaps killing bacteria and healing it such that the vagus nerve endings are better protected. If that is not what was happening then perhaps the antibiotics were effecting the absorption of essential minerals that my nervous system may be lacking. I am looking for any explanations that someone in the medical profession has to offer. My GP just doesn't have a clue. Are there any tests that make sense to have done?
Avatar f tn Nexium also affects vitamin B12 levels because the body can’t absorb the vitamin without stomach acid to uncouple the vitamin from protein in food. It also affects the absorption of calcium, which in turn can lead to osteoporosis and fractures. Discuss your concerns with your doctor before stopping any medication. I hope it helps. Best luck and regards!
Avatar m tn Following a valve replacement and triple bypass I was discharged from Hospital with a number of drugs and a new one being Omeprazole. I did not know why it was prescribed but after a number of months taking it I decided after discussion with my Doctor to stop taking it. A few months later through the night I got this terrible chest pain on a scale of 1-10 I guess it was 7-8.
Avatar m tn At first my wife had urinary infection, few weeks later she started to have fever and stomach problems, the docter told her it was a gastroenteritis. I bought her omeprazole and gave her amoxicilline, that worked. She felt fine, but few weeks later she had urinary infection symptoms again. The doctor gave her antibiotics again, that helped her.
Avatar f tn I have GERD and a hiatal hernia and have been taking omeprazole twice a day every day for a few months (I had been on Prevacid for several years before the omeprazole but insurance won't cover it any more). If your main symptom is burping, I would try going off of the omeprazole and switching to gas-x or some other type of gas relief medicine. As long as you aren't having a lot of problems with heartburn or acid reflux, you would probably be fine to discontinue using the omeprazole.
Avatar n tn is omeprazole a nercotic pain killer? i know some medications that may b addicting so i thought i would double check..also i had seen that u can take in an i.v is this true and if so how?
Avatar n tn I keep forgetting to take my omeprazole dr 20 mg 30 minutes before meals, can I take it after the meal.
Avatar m tn Hi, Do you think a different manufacturer, could possibly make a slightly diffrent product,or maybe a different coating ? that could change the makeup of Omeprazole, or any other product for that matter.
Avatar n tn Now due to the pregnancy, it seemed to worsen as I experience painful heartburns. My doctor recommends I take omeprazole along with antacids. I've been taking antacids because I know they don't bare side effects on pregnancy. I am not sure though with omeprazole. I'm scared. I am afraid it might harm the baby. Anyone here experienced the same?
Avatar m tn Hi. I am taking omeprazole for laryngopharyngeal reflux for the past 2 days. I am supposed to take two pills daily, one before breakfast and one before dinner. Today, i started having this feeling that food is stuck in my chest and back of my throat but I don't have any problems swallowing. It is an uncomfortable feeling in my chest. I did not have this symptom prior to starting the drug. Is this a side effect of the drug?
Avatar m tn By taking the anti-acids that we were prescribed, I was on omeprazole for way too many years, we’ve kind of rendered our digestive systems incapable of doing what it was meant to do. There are no more good enzymes I have no stomach acid To help with the digestive process and absorption of any type of nutrients. So I guess it’s a lesson learned the hard way.
