Common Questions and Answers about Omega 3 sources mercury

omega-3

Avatar f tn Does anyone know if I can just take an omega-3 supplement, or should I eat all the foods this app is telling to to get it. I'm not much of a fish eater.
671251 tn?1236116671 It also said that flax seed and flax seed oil are high in Omega 3 fatty acids without the worry of mercury. Flax seed flour is good to add to foods in place of some of the flour. It has to be ground or crushed to be used by our bodies. Walnuts are another good source too. I found a good recipe for salmon cakes in Joy of Cooking. Here is the recipe I used.
Avatar f tn Flaxseeds are a good source of fiber and omega 3 fatty acids that help with brain development. Chia seeds are a good source of fiber and contain calcium and iron. Pregnant women should consume 1.1 grams per kilogram of body weight of protein per day. The shakes are not to be used as a meal replacement!!!
Avatar n tn Suggest taking your prenatal vitamins and increase you intake of garlic and omega 3 fatty acids (plant sources mainly) from your diet instead of supplements. Your consummation of fish needs to be limited to decrease mercury intake. Hoped this helped you.
Avatar f tn Hey ladies have any of you gotten a Dr's advice on best source of omega 3 for baby's brain development? I was told that ground flaxseed is best but other literature says that fish oil is better as it has the DHA property. Any advice???
Avatar f tn Most doctors recommend eating a low-mercury fish atleast twice a week so you can get your omega-3 (which is good for a babies neurological system). The article is basically saying that not all cans of tuna contain high mercury, but since we don't know how to tell which ones do/don't- they recommend not taking any chances. I'm sure eating it every once in a while is fine (or atleast I'm hoping so since tuna/crackers have been my go-to snack).
518994 tn?1212242047 I read where Omega 3 was good for your dog. Is it a different Omega 3 or is it the same that humans take?
Avatar f tn I still dont eat it often due to the fact I know there is mercury content, but the omega 3 benefits outweigh that or so they believe. So I just splurge here and there but LIGHT tuna only!!
Avatar m tn Unfortunately, many young women don’t think to include dietary sources of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids before they become pregnant. In that case, there are still steps to take during pregnancy that will do much of the same job. These include taking extra amounts of omega-3 fatty acids (1 tablespoon of cod liver oil) and omega-6 fatty acids (300 mg of GLA), along with 400 IU of vitamin E as mixed tocopherols each day.

Avatar f tn You should be taking omega 3 in any case. Statins, by lowering cholesterol, also interfere with the absorption of fat soluble nutrients, which of course includes omega 3. The most important for the heart is EFA, which is found in largest amounts in fish oil, but flax and hemp oil are also very high in omega 3 oils. But omega 3 oils don't do the same thing as statins. Statins lower LDL cholesterol, the bad kind, whereas omega 3 oils provide the good kind of cholesterol, HDL.
Avatar n tn The Omega 3 in fish is good for you and baby but the mercury and having raw fish can be dangerous. I'm not sure what type of fish is used for the sushi you had but the smaller the fish the less mercury it has.
Avatar f tn Fish is good cuz of the omega 3. Some fish does have mercury like mackrel.
1756970 tn?1314376733 Your welcome. Well the more EPA the better, so if you want more EPA then yes buy a different one, I am not 100% sure how you tell if it has Mercury in it or not, maybe in should say on the bottle, but i guess it might not sure. I buy Usana fish oil and i know its a good brand and does take the Mercury out, my suppler has told me it does. It also contains vitamin D as it is needed to absorb the fish oil properly. Now how long it takes to work is different to everyone and depends on the issue etc.
Avatar f tn I had it for lunch! Just went for the low mercury cooked ones! Also look for the fish high in omega 3 like cooked salmon.
657586 tn?1224587947 Fish is great brain food (Omega 3 essental fatty acid) for you and the baby and I would just make sure its cooked. I am avoiding raw despite pregnant women eating it in japan I am just being careful and having cooked fish once or twice a week.
Avatar f tn They say afford seafood with high mercury but a lot of apps say that seafood is really good for the baby cause contains omega 3 in some seafood which is great for development! I try to eat seafood once a week so he can get some omega 3!
Avatar f tn Yes normally omega 3 fish, but watch out for fish that contain mercury and u shouldnt eat it too often,i hardly eat fish but when i crave it i eat tilapia.

Avatar f tn You need a certain amount of seafood for the omega 3, and I think they say max one can of tuna a week, but tuna is a higher mercury fish. I think you can have more of the lower mercury ones without a problem, but I would double check with your doctor or even just google it. Make sure you cook whatever you're eating, though.
Avatar m tn Oh! I forgot, you would not burp the fish oil if you take the pill each time you eat something or after every meal, I have never had a problem with it.
Avatar m tn s more prevalent in fish that are higher in omega 3 acids. Certainly salmon has less mercury than tuna, but a lot more omega 3 (at least wild salmon, that is). And it also depends on where the fish is caught as to how high the mercury levels will be. I think, as I've often said, that what we know about food and medicine is pretty much nothing -- lots of information, very little fact. This is a misconception about the word "science.
446896 tn?1237802742 I have a curiosity question...I am also taking Omega 3 fish oil, as well as a B vitamin supplement. Has anyone heard if these are OK with Prozac (fluoxetine)? I have looked for information, and havent found anything yet. Let me know if you know...
Avatar n tn Parents of ADHD children and ADHD adults who wish to utilize omega-3 fatty acids as a method of modifying their behavior should use both flax and seafood sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Flax provides alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), the master omega-3 fatty acid from which other omega-3 fatty acids are synthesized. Seafood provides DHA directly which appears to be a vital omega-3 fatty acid for modifying behavior of ADHD children and adults. The rate of conversion of ALA to DHA is quite low.
Avatar m tn the advice about Omega-3, it is one of the supplements that has wide endorsement. One of the reasons it is helpful is that it contributes to plasticity in the neurons (cells of the brain) and this enhances the movement of electrical activity in the brain. Now there is no reason to think that Omega-3 will help with the behavior you are describing, but as a supplement that contributes to healthy brain functioning it can be useful.
