Omega 3 in oils

Common Questions and Answers about Omega 3 in oils

omega-3

Avatar m tn Higher concentrations of EPA and DHA, the active components in omega-3s, can also be found in LOVAZA — the first and only prescription omega-3 medication. It is important to know that some types of fish may contain mercury and other pollutants from the environment. Therefore, the American Heart Association (AHA) cautions that some people should limit the amount of certain types of fish they eat.
4274823 tn?1388529098 Thanks for the list. I avoid soy and flax due to a health issue. I do eat pumpkin seeds and walnuts as well as plenty of vegetables and fruit. Interesting about papaya. Ideally I would like to get it from food rather than have to purchase an expensive supplement that I don't feel 100% comfortable with.
Avatar m tn Others argue that too much fatty fish might be a problem not because of the Omega 3 oils but the contaminants that have gotten into our fatty fish (you can avoid some of this by taking a reliable supplement, but unfortunately we have to rely on company reputation for this as nobody is doing much checking out there). And with flax, is there a difference between organically grown and that grown with carcinogenic chemical applications? Between farm raised fish and wild fish?
Avatar n tn I am not sure of your question. Are you asking where omega 3 and omega 6 foods come from? Omegas 3 / 6 are polyunsaturated oils that help lower cholesterol and help prevent blood platelets from clotting blood vessel walls. The best source is fish especially mackerel, tuna, salmon, and lake trout. Fish should be eaten 2-3 times a week. Omega 3 are found in whole nuts, soy nuts / oil, and canola oil. Recommend 1-2 teaspoons of nuts daily. Hope this answered your question.
Avatar f tn You can go to cheaper brands, however, suggest looking for supplements that have the same content as what you are buying now. If some of the supplement have less omega 6 that is ok. Research has found that omega 6 counteracts omega 3's so the more omega 3s in the supplement, the better. Hoped I helped you and not confused you.
1225070 tn?1344709174 Most of my reaserch says that you should not really mix the two together, but I found a prenatal yesterday that has DHA and Omega-3 in it, which is what the fish oil has, and the Pharmacist said it should be fine to take the two together since its only once a day.
Avatar m tn t purify it, meaning you get more than just the omega 3 oils, but that means you get less of the omega 3 oils and have to take more of them, and they are expensive. Cod liver oil shouldn't be taken regularly -- it can have a laxative effect, and the liver is a detoxification organ, meaning toxins accumulate there. It can be good for skin problems and other things, but for basic omega 3 you don't want liver oil.
Avatar f tn You should be taking omega 3 in any case. Statins, by lowering cholesterol, also interfere with the absorption of fat soluble nutrients, which of course includes omega 3. The most important for the heart is EFA, which is found in largest amounts in fish oil, but flax and hemp oil are also very high in omega 3 oils. But omega 3 oils don't do the same thing as statins. Statins lower LDL cholesterol, the bad kind, whereas omega 3 oils provide the good kind of cholesterol, HDL.
Avatar n tn It is working very well, but his dose (after gradual increase to a point of benefit) is more than recommended. Can he overdose on 3 times the normal dose of purified omega 3 fish oil..the brand he takes is Health from the Sea PFO pure fish oil liquid. He takes twice the dose of the flax seed oil (same brand name).
Avatar f tn What brand of Omega 3's are you using? I have been taking just the Kroger brand Omega 3's with fish oil concentrate. Should I maybe look at the health food store for some that are especially for pregnancy? Thanks!
Avatar f tn Hey ladies have any of you gotten a Dr's advice on best source of omega 3 for baby's brain development? I was told that ground flaxseed is best but other literature says that fish oil is better as it has the DHA property. Any advice???
19524680 tn?1479322297 The argument the company makes is that the fatty acids in this product go to the bottom of the intestine and are therefore more bio-available than other fish oils, but that sounds pretty bogus. And why would omega 3 oils help you shrink your gut? This is a scheme if not a scam. If you want to shrink your gut, you'll need to change your diet and increase the amount of exercise you do -- there are no magic pills other than speed, and you don't want to do speed.
Avatar m tn B vitamins are also essential co-factors for producing the neuro-transmitters the Lexapro is acting on, so they should aid its functioning without increasing its functioning. Same with omega-3 oils, as anti-depressants often cause weight gain and increased cholesterol, which is aided by omega 3 oils, and they also aid brain function, particularly fish oil (DHA). Fish oil is also said to help with the brain zaps some people get when they stop ssris, so it's useful to have in your system.
Avatar m tn t just one substance, Omega three are fatty acids just like Omega 6 fatty acids found in oils and meat etc. Omega 3 are EPA, DHA, and ALA . Some experts have said that the balance between Omega 6 fatty acids and Omega 3 is key, but just as many say this is nonsense. Omega 3 do have benefits, mainly reducing inflammation in the body, such as in the arteries or joints. It can also reduce your clotting factor if taken in too high doses, causing excessive bleeding.
Avatar f tn And yes, you can also take Omega 3 oils. Evening primrose primarily contains omega 6 oils. As for dosing herbs, which would include St. John's Wort, they should be taken two to three times a day depending on the dosage to keep them in your system. That's not necessary with the fats, since they store in the fatty tissues.
198942 tn?1236316304 We all need the essential fatty acids to stay healthy, and oils that are high in Omega 3 oils, we get enough Omega 6 oils in our diets through eggs and such. The omega 3 is best obtained from fish, and I take a fish oil supplement for my heart and general brain health, it is in liquid form and not too bad once you get used to it. Flax seed oil is another good oil, it sort of has a "nutty" taste.
Avatar f tn Patients without documented coronary heart disease should eat a variety of (preferably fatty) fish at least twice a week. Include oils and foods rich in alpha-linolenic acid (flaxseed, canola and soybean oils; flaxseed and walnuts). 2. Patients with documented CHD should consume about 1 g of EPA+DHA per day, preferably from fatty fish. EPA+DHA in capsule form could be considered in consultation with the physician. 3.
1645208 tn?1301072177 Yes, you can give fish oil caps. Salmon oil caps at Costco. Omega 3 caps daily. Canned sardines packed in oil. Actually, quite a few people are starting to add coconut oil with good results. This is a good link to read up on http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:U4NQT9evYhEJ:www.natural-dog-health-remedies.com/coconut-oil-benefits.html+coconut+oil+for+dogs&cd=12&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&client=firefox-a&source=www.google.
Avatar n tn Omega 3 fish oils have been found helpful in treating dangerously fast heart rate (tachycardia) and seem to be related to heart rate modulation but I could find no relationship to your symptoms. I recommend you stop the Gel caps for a week or so and see if it gets better then restart and see if it gets worse. I am interested to know what happens. Dr.
Avatar f tn In general, omega-3 fish oils have been shown to have beneficial effects on cardiovascular health so I wonder if you have some sort of special situation that would cause your internist to recommend against it. Please contact him to find out why. The more research I do about omega 3 fish oil and flaxseed oil, the more I realize that while they can have some exciting benefits (especially fish oil), they are not for everyone.
2001997 tn?1333888744 Just a question about the fish oil. Is it ok from Salmon? it has Omega 3 in it.
Avatar f tn ve got is great for overall essential fatty acids, especially for women with hormone problems, but for cholesterol the Omega 3 oils are the best. These are found in fish oil, hemp oil, and flax oil primarily. The garlic and parsley is probably more of a waste of money, but it certainly won't harm you. Garlic works best combined with other nutrients, so a cholesterol lowering formula would be better than garlic by itself. Exercise and dietary changes are also necessary.
1655526 tn?1330655629 On Omega-3 supplements, I notice a significant increase in PVCs as well as slight increase in general twitchiness or anxiety. Yeah, it's a sample size of one and I'm the only observer, but that's the way it seems to me. However, some scientists have observed problems in giving patients these supplements: http://www.examiner.
Avatar f tn I found the best for lowering cholesterol is the omega 3 oils fish oils but the pure pharm quality ones. it takes between 6 and 8 months of taking the pills daily - to get it down plus eatting right. sounds like your eatting right - Iv been on the Res Q products for years ! I also take ldlx for the tryglerides , as they were out of wack from poor eatting habbits I had. everything takes time to work - but they both pretty well put things back to normal for me..
Avatar n tn It is recommended that all Trans fats and saturated fats are not consumed, but omega-3 fatty acids and monounsaturated fats can be eaten. To break that down simply it means nuts, seeds, and peanut/olive oils can be eaten. Suggest having them eat a moderate fat diet to help lower their cholesterol. Moderate fat diet means = use polyunsaturated (omega 3, corn oil, nuts, etc) fats and monounsaturated (olive oil, canola oil, peanut oil, etc) fats, no saturated fats and no Trans fats.
Avatar n tn But hemp seeds and flax seeds, while containing some Omega 6 fats, contain high amounts of Omega 3 fats, which are essential for health. Some Omega 6 is also essential for health, as is Omega 9 and other fats.
Avatar m tn Omega 3 oils by themselves won't replace statins. Doing this the natural way would require a complete program, including diet, exercise, relaxation exercises, and supplements for reducing cholesterol, protecting the integrity of the blood vessel walls, etc.
