Avatar m tn Most risk factors of coronary heart disease are changeable, meaning coronary heart disease is a largely preventable disease (3). Omega-3 oils have been shown to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, but how much is enough? Recent research from the British Journal of Nutrition found consumption of greater than 250 mg per day was associated with a 35% reduction in the risk of sudden cardiac death (4).
Avatar m tn t point out is the fact that they have much higher than normal HDL levels, as high as 68% over normal, due to their diets that are rich in Omega 3 fats, like those found in fish oil. Also, they have lower than normal serum TGL's. Due to their high HDL levels they have a higher overall TC number, but it's a healthy breakdown.
Avatar m tn t just one substance, Omega three are fatty acids just like Omega 6 fatty acids found in oils and meat etc. Omega 3 are EPA, DHA, and ALA . Some experts have said that the balance between Omega 6 fatty acids and Omega 3 is key, but just as many say this is nonsense. Omega 3 do have benefits, mainly reducing inflammation in the body, such as in the arteries or joints. It can also reduce your clotting factor if taken in too high doses, causing excessive bleeding.
Avatar f tn Statins, by lowering cholesterol, also interfere with the absorption of fat soluble nutrients, which of course includes omega 3. The most important for the heart is EFA, which is found in largest amounts in fish oil, but flax and hemp oil are also very high in omega 3 oils. But omega 3 oils don't do the same thing as statins. Statins lower LDL cholesterol, the bad kind, whereas omega 3 oils provide the good kind of cholesterol, HDL.
1655526 tn?1330655629 I know that omega 3 is really supposed to be good for the heart, but I get palps after I take them for 3 days, especially krill oil. I've read in this forum that others have also had adverse reactions to taking this supplement. So I wanted to put this poll out to see how omega 3 affects you. The first time I suspected krill oil, which is supposed to be the best omega 3, I used the process of elimination. Still not believing it I did it a second and third time.
Avatar n tn Salmon is great for the omega 3 and buy eggs with omega 3. Monitor your cholesterol through blood work every year to make sure that the levels are not going up. Monitor your blood pressure to make sure that it is staying within the normal range. Stay active. Take care.
907968 tn?1292622204 Salmon from the sea is the way to go for the Omega 3 oils and other nutrients that come from life in the sea. There are limits to how much you should eat per week due to mercury in the fish. You can research this on the web. I had a quintuple bypass 2 years ago at age 49. No more fried or buttery food for me. Plus lots of veggies and fruit. Steel-cut oats are great for breakfast and will make your cholesterol happy.
Avatar m tn Each quartile corresponded to the level of omega-3 fatty acids in their blood. The first quartile was very low in omega-3 fatty acids; the second quartile was higher in omega-3s, etc. The researchers found that the men in the second-lowest quartile had a 45 percent lower risk of sudden cardiac death compared with those in the lowest quartile, and those in the second highest quartile had a 72 percent lower risk of death.
212161 tn?1599427282 So far, certain enzymes which prevent inflammation in arteries have been found very low in all heart disease patients. We have had books sold by the millions claiming diets that cure or prevent heart disease, and they are ALL wrong. It's just until recently there was no proving them wrong.
317787 tn?1473358451 But keep in mind the connection between cholesterol levels and heart disease has no consensus and is increasingly being challenged by medical researchers, so how much good it does is in question. The real bad stuff is triglycerides. It's possible, and it's true with me, that if you have high HDL you'd have somewhat high cholesterol but it would be a good thing, not a bad thing, because the high levels is not the form of cholesterol thought to be a problem.

I also suggest that you see a doctor to find out the cause and type of palpitations you are having.
Avatar n tn While all children with ADHD are not deficient in omega-3 fatty acids, we believe that the addition of omega-3 fatty acids to the diet may be important for some ADHD children. In fact, studies show that children whose treatment program includes only medication, educational and psychological therapy continue to be at high risk for vandalism, petty crime, frequency of alcoholic intoxication, and possession of marijuana.
Avatar m tn New evidence indicates omega-3 fatty acids found in salmon and other foods may work with two blood-thinners to reduce the risk of heart attack in stent patients.
Avatar f tn Hello and thanks for this service! Is it more beneficial to take an "omega 3 EPA & DHA fish oil supplement" or an "omega 3, 6 &9 EPA & DHA fish oil supplement"? I'm a bit confused as to which would be of the optimum benefit to purchase. Thanks for your time and expertise!
Avatar m tn I had a stroke several months ago and they have me on these statin drugs in which I am not in any favor of, just wandering what some thoughts would be to go with this omega q plus and get off the statins.
Avatar m tn There are rumours of many things in diets which are supposed to help, but lack the actual evidence. Some research has shown slight benefits with omega, while others have shown increase in disease. The ideas come from simple basic thinking. For example, with omega they wondered how eskimos could eat fat and be heart disease free, so they looked at the content of fish meat which they eat lots of. Of course, this showed up Omega oils so they ASSUMED it must be this.
Avatar f tn Ask your doctor ways to prevent heart disease such as taking fish oil for the Omega 3, possibly adding vitamin B3 as a lot of people are lacking this vitamin and a deficiency of this vitamin can cause different diseases.
Avatar m tn An Italian study found there was a 45% decrease in sudden cardiac death in patients who suffered a heart attack when taking 3 omega pills a day plus a baby aspirin. What they found was that aspirin enhances the effects of omega, in that instead of 6 pills a day to get the required amount, you only need to take 3. In Europe there are new studies starting which will evaluate the effects of aspirin because this drug doesn't seem to be having the desired effect.
Avatar f tn Does anyone know if Omega-3 helps heart arrythmias? It worked for me, but not for my 30 yr old daughter who suffers from PVCs. They can make life hellish but for the most part are benign - but definitely a quality of life issue. I would say avoid all cardiac stimulants like caffeine, nicotine, and believe it or not - anger and sentimental thoughts can cause arrythmias. You can deliver bad hormones into your own body that stimulate your heart by having scary, or sentimental thoughts.
Avatar f tn I take one to fight babybrain. Omegas are stripped from myelin shealths during pregnancy and since they act as lubricant in the conduction of, essentially thoughts, our thought process is slowed. I didn't ask my doc about it yet but it does clear up fog in my brain.
Avatar f tn you know, I haven't been taking the Omega 3 since I got pregnant - they make me nauseous. I just take my prenatals daily. I try to eat healthy(doesn't always happen) but i do try. I didnt take any Omega 3 with my other kids and their fine, so oh well.
