omega-3

518994 tn?1212242047 I read where Omega 3 was good for your dog. Is it a different Omega 3 or is it the same that humans take?
Avatar f tn My shitzu dog is 7 years old and has kidney stones and allergies. He also has high cholesterol(Cushings' disease suspected). He weighs about 10 lbs. Is it safe for me to give him omega 3 capsules and what should be the dosage? Thank you, Mrs.
Avatar f tn Rather, we want to increase long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (from fish oils) to reduce the ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids in the food. So, rather than add a supplement to a food, you are better served to feed a food that already has increased omega-3 fatty acids (specifically, EPA and DHA), and has a ratio of n-6 to n-3 of between 10:1 and 5:1.
Avatar m tn But there would be no harm in adding the Omega 3 oil to her food? Or adding it to a little mashed potato or sweet potato, mixing it in, and giving her bits of that as treats OK I know....a little messy...but maybe you could add this to her food?) It's also possible she will like the oil for its own flavour, and she might just lick it straight from a spoon?
612551 tn?1450022175 Hi Jerry. There are some benefits of flaxseed, as the oils are similar to fish oils but without the smell. However, there is a higher ratio of omega-6 to omega-3, which isn't too good. It's a complicated process, but effectively dogs find it hard to convert alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) to the more active non-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids, so although some omega-6 is okay (in fact, some say it's essential), it's the ratio between omega-3 and omega-6 that's important.
Avatar n tn Recently I started to give them an Omega 3 chew with fish oil. This seems to be what is causing them to have this reaction. What can I do to keep them hydrated and stop the symptoms?
Avatar f tn re tiny seeds that have very little taste and can easily be put in almost any food. I put 1/2 tsp in my cereal or yogurt once a day and now have all the Omega-3 I need without the expensive pills or having to worry about whether I'm eating enough fish. It also costs alot less - last weekend I paid only $1.19 for 1/2 lb. that should last at least a month. If you research it, they are the best source for non-fish Omega-3, even better than walnuts (and less fattening).
612551 tn?1450022175 It seems our friend the dog also benefits from a good dose of Omega 3, as sound in fish. We have our Westie on a sweet potato fish formula kibble and I wonder if it could be improved by breaking open a one human (the type we may take 3 or more of a day) fish oil capsule and drizzle it over the main kibble meal. Yes, I have read the advice on feeding some canned food too, and am working my way up to that.
Avatar n tn I do both....I have a number of dog food cook books....I have 4 furkids so I usually make recipes like Turkey loafs or turkey patties that go along way...There favorite snack is homemade blueberry muffins. (Also from a cookbook). I make a batch and freeze them..Pull out a few at a time. I eat them, too. They are yummy! :) Made with honey and such with no salt or any of that...I add Icelandic Salmon oil to their food, as it is an omega 3...
Avatar n tn I heard omega 6 is not good for a dog that had a tumor. What kind of dry food would you recommend? Please email me your suggestion.
1645208 tn?1301072177 Yes, you can give fish oil caps. Salmon oil caps at Costco. Omega 3 caps daily. Canned sardines packed in oil. Actually, quite a few people are starting to add coconut oil with good results. This is a good link to read up on http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:U4NQT9evYhEJ:www.natural-dog-health-remedies.com/coconut-oil-benefits.html+coconut+oil+for+dogs&cd=12&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&client=firefox-a&source=www.google.
Avatar n tn That helped a great deal with our dog for her last 3 months. We also have a dog door, but we had to make certain she had the opportunity to pee before we went to bed. No further accidents occurred once we got the nightly ritual going.
Avatar f tn d tell her to try the food change and see if she notices any improvement. She can also try giving a small amount of Omega 3 or Flax Seed oil daily (small dog, small amount) Poor little thing must be miserable.
Avatar f tn Agree also to get him on a better food. Try to find a grain free food with Omega 3 in it. Do a gradual transition over a few days mixing old and new food.
Avatar f tn Most of the better dog foods have Omega 6 in them and, if I remember correctly, if you supplement with Omega 3, you should feed a low fat diet, which for a Boston may not be a bad idea. :-) You can guy Omega 3 capsules and maybe give one a day. You can get flax seed oil and add a little of that daily. Not the two together, either/or. You can feed canned sardines in oil a couple of times a week (maybe 2 or 3 at a time).
Avatar f tn Part of the problem may be you are bathing too often and stripping the natural pils. What breed dog is this? Do you have a flea problem? Have you asked your Vet about a once a month topical treatment or the new oral Comfortis? What food ate you feeding? I would try transitioning to a food with no grain, esp corn. You might try a small bag of the Pro Plan salmon or there are other foods available with fish in them. You can try adding some Omega 3' or fish oil or Flaxseed oil once a day.
671251 tn?1236116671 It also said that flax seed and flax seed oil are high in Omega 3 fatty acids without the worry of mercury. Flax seed flour is good to add to foods in place of some of the flour. It has to be ground or crushed to be used by our bodies. Walnuts are another good source too. I found a good recipe for salmon cakes in Joy of Cooking. Here is the recipe I used.
Avatar f tn Regarding the Omega 3 supplement ... dog supplements normally have a mix of omega 3 and omega 6 in the correct ratio. The problem with omega 6 is it is harder to absorb and causes some toxins, as the kidneys need to deal with it, but in the right ratio with omega 3, it should be fine. Just make sure you use a canine supplement, free of other additives, and NOT a human supplement.
Avatar f tn Paw licking is irritated feet, yes from allergies. And it can be caused from a number of things... Wet grass, pollens, dust, certain foods, etc. can trigger the inflammation. Like twopack said, supplementing with a Omega 3 fish oil or flax will help. It sure won't hurt....It's possible that food is the culprit. I'd try a grain free diet for at least the summer and see if that helps. You want NO wheat, corn, or soy in the diet. All of these can cause skin allergies!!!
Avatar m tn t just one substance, Omega three are fatty acids just like Omega 6 fatty acids found in oils and meat etc. Omega 3 are EPA, DHA, and ALA . Some experts have said that the balance between Omega 6 fatty acids and Omega 3 is key, but just as many say this is nonsense. Omega 3 do have benefits, mainly reducing inflammation in the body, such as in the arteries or joints. It can also reduce your clotting factor if taken in too high doses, causing excessive bleeding.
662972 tn?1270166301 Now she is well groomed, and taken great care of, frontline flea meds, heart guard, all shots up to date and on premium dog food. Also put omega 3 on her food. Well she is very itchy and has little bumps like a misquote bites. I have given her an oatmeal bath, allergy meds...Anyone have any advise lease help....
506570 tn?1215836300 I know Malamutes benefit from omega oils as well which is why I include sardines and tuna in his food. He is a happy healthy dog in all other respects and has fantastic teeth since he has been eating fresh meat and bones. What sort of supplements should I be giving Loki that he may be missing in his food?
Avatar m tn Many studies are exposed everyday. My opinion is this : try to eat food which contain omega 3 such as sardines or salmon etc If it is difficult for you I would suggest omega 3 capsules but I would also suggest you to confirm this with your doctor because all capsules are not the same!
Avatar f tn also be a good addition to the diet of kd dogs ... BUT ... while egg white is rich in omega-3, the yolk is very high in phosphorous and omega-6. The best balancing rule to follow therefore is one egg yolk for every 3 egg whites. Eggs are also extremely high in good protein ... so I would only give them (like the chicken) as a treat maybe once or twice a week.
689528 tn?1364135841 So your on a quality dog food now and your adding Omega 3's. Maybe two or 3 1200mg caps? Did you start adding the probiotics? Probiotics and fungi do not like to live in the same area. They don't get along at ALL. No more hot spots? So thats progress, right? Dogs are so in tuned to what is happening in the household that it is possible a part of the cause is stress.
Avatar f tn I dont know if it could be the food. Several people has told me that Purina isnt a very good food, Any suggestions on a good dog food.
1507801 tn?1289853453 My 2 year old Siberian husky was jut Dx with hip dysplasia and arthritis his specialist vet (a ortho vet) said salmon fish oil is the best and to make sure the salmon oil is 150-200 epa (eicopenteric acid) this is the omega 3 of the fish oil. He also said that a supplement call Dasuquin-MSM make sure it says MSM you can get it online( he said for small breed even though he is 50lbs.).
Avatar n tn we bought a groomers brush the best dog food and supplement, maybe is it because the dog is a golden retriever or the time of year?
