Common Questions and Answers about Omega 3 in cod

omega-3

Avatar f tn Cod liver oil isn't the best fish oil for inflammation or for omega 3 oils. It comes in gel caps, which you don't taste at all. Nordic Naturals is a very good brand for omega 3 rich fish oil.
Avatar m tn t purify it, meaning you get more than just the omega 3 oils, but that means you get less of the omega 3 oils and have to take more of them, and they are expensive. Cod liver oil shouldn't be taken regularly -- it can have a laxative effect, and the liver is a detoxification organ, meaning toxins accumulate there. It can be good for skin problems and other things, but for basic omega 3 you don't want liver oil.
Avatar f tn No, cod liver oil should be avoided. You can get fish oil (that's not from liver) which is great for you and baby.
Avatar m tn I would take daily supplements of cod-liver oil (a teaspoon a day) and a teaspoon of an omega-3. These things often happen for simple reasons like sitting in an airplane seat for too many hours. Next time it happen's I'd go to an emergency room.
Avatar f tn Some people recommend a dose of between 1000mg of EPA with 500mg of DHA in Omega 3 and a dose of 1000mg of Cod liver oil. Vitamin C between 500mg and 1000mg. This should not only improve the depression but also help with the joints. However always consult with your doctor if you are currently taking medication or ask for advice with a local health store on recommended doses and drug interactions( if any).
Avatar n tn Standard cod liver oil is *extremely* high in vitamin A, and there is some chance that taking excess vitamin A--over a teaspoon per day--will increase the effectiveness of coumadin, putting patients at even greater risk for bleeding. Same goes for the Omega-3s in cod liver oil. You can read about it here (or wikipedia, etc): http://www.livestrong.
Avatar f tn The problem with cod liver oil is that it has a higher amount of vitamin A than recommended for pregnancy. Vitamin A can cause birth defects if you take too much of it, and liver (including cod liver) is extremely high in vitamin A. You probably didn't harm your baby only taking it those few times, and of course getting too much vitamin A is not a guarantee for birth defects, it just really increases the chance.
1655526 tn?1330655629 On Omega-3 supplements, I notice a significant increase in PVCs as well as slight increase in general twitchiness or anxiety. Yeah, it's a sample size of one and I'm the only observer, but that's the way it seems to me. However, some scientists have observed problems in giving patients these supplements: http://www.examiner.

Avatar n tn I am a 59 y o female with several risk factors for heart disease. I have been on a regimin of 4800mg of Omega 3, and 100 mg od Pomagranite for several months and so far so good. Both of those suppliments are easy to take as they are in pill form. Omega3 is positive for a healthy heart and arteries, and pomagranite is a detoxifier/anti-oxident. It seems that a couple of people I know having had heart by-pass surgery have been put on Omega3 by their cardiologists.

In fact, flaxseed like your pre-natal omega oils help develop eye tissue as well as neural and brain tissues. These oils are MOST important in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy and should already be in the mother's system before conception to best be transferred. Make sure they are high quality vitamins and GOOD LUCK!

Avatar m tn Unfortunately, many young women don’t think to include dietary sources of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids before they become pregnant. In that case, there are still steps to take during pregnancy that will do much of the same job. These include taking extra amounts of omega-3 fatty acids (1 tablespoon of cod liver oil) and omega-6 fatty acids (300 mg of GLA), along with 400 IU of vitamin E as mixed tocopherols each day.
Avatar f tn An omega-3 overdose is likely to cause any of the usual omega-3 side effects, but perhaps more severely. In particular, stomach upset can be expected. In serious cases, an overdose could increase the risk of bleeding, including dangerous internal bleeding, such as gastrointestinal bleeding or bleeding in the brain.
