Common Questions and Answers about Omega 3 and bipolar disorder

omega-3

Avatar f tn s still experimental and such in this nature but I never read up on it for bipolar disorder but you know, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are clinically linked somehow anyway.
1053987 tn?1279304510 I take Omega-3 supplements and Vitamin D. For Omega-3, you need to make sure that what you're taking has a high concentration of EPA fats, as these are the ones that will actually help with mood stabilization. Look for capsules that come from fish oil, not flax seed, because flax contains a different type of Omega-3 (ALA). I use a brand called OmegaBrite because my doctor recommended it, actually. Apparently it's one of the best out there to help treat bipolar disorder and depression.
403156 tn?1290150018 I know it does not control bipolar because I suffered horrible symptoms before my diagnosis when I was taking Omega 3 already. Just got my diagnosis and added in the bipolar meds!
Avatar n tn You can not control bipolar disorder on just Omega-3. I have been taking it for years. It is a good suppliment, however, telling people to use it alone is dangerous so I would kindly ask you not to go around telling people to go off their meds and use a suppliment. Especially those of us with severe bipolar. Some people are new to their disorder and unsure. They use this forum to seek answers and if given the wrong information it could lead to a very dangerous situation.

202665 tn?1248806733 ve just been incorrect to start with and as the others said, bipolar disorder can have psychotic features and you could develop schizophrenia symptoms down the road alongside the bipolar disorder, but that would be schizoaffective disorder. Also, in the new DSM-V they have currently decided to totally deleting all the subtypes of schizophrenia and just going to diagnose solely schizophrenia.
Avatar f tn There was a doctor on the Stephen Fry documentary on bipolar disorder 'The Secret Life of the Manic Depressive' who swore by controlling her BP entirely through diet with things such as omega 3 but again it's like you pointed out and I said about the omega 3. Interesting documentary at any rate, Stephen Fry interviews several people he knows with the disease and tells you his own experiences with it. Vertigo I usually just wait it out, sorry I couldn't really help much there.
601528 tn?1224081498 9-10 grams a day, yes,9-10 grams - and my psychiatrist Dr. A is ok with my megadosing_with omega-3's. If you are skeptical, please look at mypost in the "Alternative" section @ www.bipolarworld.org about Omega-3's. Read Dr. Stoll's excellent book_"The Omega Connection". Nordic Naturals is also based near where I live and their products have an outstanding reputation and are worth the cost.
Avatar f tn One in which you have a family history of bipolar disorder and you become hypomanic only after treatment with antidepressants for a major depressive episode. The problem is that although clinical experience demonstrates that treatment with antidepressants clearly stimulates mania in some people, the DSM-IV and other diagnostic tools all indicate that you don’t have bipolar disorder if your mania or hypomania is brought on by drugs or medications.
1655526 tn?1330655629 So im not crazy after all.. I have told doctors and other people that fish and omega 3 bother my arrthymia. Noone believed me but I know what happens and it isnt pretty. I stay away from it. I did find an article once that said its good for the heart but people with arrythmias it can make them go into life threating ones.
574118 tn?1305135284 //www.psychiatrictimes.com/bipolar-disorder/content/article/10168/46826. It put the ends at MDD and Bipolar I... schizophrenia was not mentioned. Schizophrenia is not a mood disorder and will not be included in bipolar spectrum disorder, should that ever come to pass. The spectrum refers to sub-threshold bipolar within the MDD-BP I range. I googled wave theory bipolar and the ONLY thing in psychiatry I found was your post. All other entries were about engineering.
Avatar f tn My younger sister was diagnosed 2 yrs ago her story has it's ups and downs! I really feel like you want to take control over this disorder , as you should! :-) and good for you on that because that's exactly how you should take charge. Take your meds - hang out with friends- be happy because at that point when you know you take your meds all your thoughts are yours, all the feelings are yours and to be aware is to be alive. What meds are u on?

1243620 tn?1274790697 It sounds like bipolar 2 disorder and you are cycling between the two. One day happy the next day depressed. The racing thoughts is part of the mania and the eating disorder is part of the depression. There is hope for you. In the mean time try to go to bed at an earlier hour. Avoid caffeine. Staying up late can cause more depression. You might be deficient in B vitamins too that causes depression. Eating bread and a little bit of dark chocalte that helps with depression.
Avatar f tn I read that Its 50/50. Depends though, I know ppl that are bipolar and have three kids, one has mood disorder. I'm bipolar, so is my husband and were having a baby in Nov. So I'm curious to see how this will work out. Either way what better people to help a child or someone deal with it then someone who actually has it themselves.
Avatar m tn Anticonvulsants work because they discovered bipolar disorder is a chronic inflammation in the brain that prevents uptake of omega 3 which explains why people with bipolar disorder benefit from taking doses of it.
667937 tn?1227758698 I was diagnosed bipolar when i was 14 i am now 35 i was on medications but stopped them in December taking other means of herbs and stuff (5-HTP fish oil omega 3) and others. I stopped the fish oil about a little over a week ago because of belching a fishy taste. Could that be why i am becoming depressed or do you think it could be something else? I have had no episodes of depression the whole time i have been on herbals. Until now after stopping the fish oil.
Avatar f tn 1 everyone talks to them self 2 anyone who says they don't is a liar or hasn't figured it out you are not loosing it at all promise you that and trying the meds is great seeking help is great relationships are great all these things are great and i have had this really intense before its like a monologue in your head and you are the announcer do you fear judgement>? Are you holding back a lot of your ideas and thoughts on the world thats currently in front of you?
Avatar f tn So I went to the doctor this morning for the depression that I've been feeling for a while now. They put me on zoloft for now, but wants me to talk to a therapist on Monday. They are thinking that I might be bipolar. Does anyone have POTS and bipolar? I am hoping that it isn't bipolar. Thats just another thing to deal with when I haven't even gotten a grip on my POTS yet.
454366 tn?1211245301 I have recently taken myself off of all the meds I was taking for my disorder. I researched the Omega-3 fatty acids and am taking a suppliment now. Litium did give me a hyperactive thyroid condition. The med I was given for that has a side effect of osteoporosis in the lumbar in long term use (Synthroid). I ended up with litium toxicity a few years back because diuretics will cause that. As you know caffine is a diuretic (soft drinks) - which most kiddo's I know tend to drink.
Avatar n tn If he can go to work, be appropriate in that environment and then comes home and behaves as he does - probably not bipolar. That and the fact that he sleeps his 8 hours every night. That would be very rare for someone with bipolar. Usually the ups correspond with less sleep and no fatigue and the downs with more sleep or insomnia but being tired all the time. It is possible it is cyclothymia which is a milder case of bipolar disorder.
Avatar f tn I can't say, I have read very little about alternative medicines as treatments - I have read a lot about Omega 3 which may help as a supplement but never seen it used as a treatment in full to replace other MS drugs. What does your pdoc say about this? Are you getting therapy? if it was me I would worry that these are halo effect from starting a new drug - to see if any drug is effective you need much more than 2 weeks - depending on diagnosis 2 weeks might be nothing in terms of cycles.
