Common Questions and Answers about Older cat not eating losing weight

eating

Avatar n tn My cat is eating very little but drinking lots of water. He is losing weight and has a weak "MEOW"...can you offer any help? He also peed on the floor instead of his litter box and has never done that before.
Avatar f tn quite often an older cat will stop eating.
Avatar n tn Let's see a 10 yr old cat that's losing weight and losing hair. This, to me, sounds like your cat has an overactive thyroid. Try doing a google search or yahoo search on hyperthyroidism and see if the symptoms fit. There's also a possiblility of kidney disease, as well. That could cause weight loss, too, but not hair loss. My main suspicion is hyperthyroid disease. This can be extremely dangerous because the heart rate increases big time. This can cause heart failure.
Avatar n tn Very most likely your male cat of 9 years has hyperparathyroidism. Male cats between the ages of 9 and 12 often develop this disorder. I know because my Sunshine went through this also. He was eating like a hog and losing weight!!! I was frightened. He would also display odd behaviors once in a while.
Avatar n tn It is undigested. I feed her Purina for Indoor and older cats. She does not appear to be losing weight. She has been doing this for about 6-9 months. She is a shorthaired orange tabby. It does not appear to be hairball related. Otherwise she rules the house as her kingdom.
Avatar f tn t keep waiting for her to get better, something is seriously wrong and you need a Vet who will do some extensive testing REAL SOON, not eating well, vomiting and weight loss for a cat is a VERY serious concern good luck...
203342 tn?1328737207 Yeah, I heard that. It makes sense. It's just like humans who get diabetes, I guess. Some of the first signs are excess drinking, urinating and losing weight (I think it's rather rapid weight loss, not sure). The vet did say to watch if she's drinking a lot or if the litter box seems more full. I will keep an eye on her. I'm going to watch her for awhile to see if she's drinking more, etc. I think I'm going to have to get pet insurance, though.
203342 tn?1328737207 Ok, guys, pacify me. I think I'm just getting paranoid and it's ok to tell me that! I just lost my dog last night and I was just thinking that Misha is only a year younger than Willow and I hope I don't lose her any time soon. Tonight as I was holding her and petting her, I rubbed her belly (yes, she's one of the few cats who let you rub her belly!) and she seems to have lost quite a bit of weight. I don't know in how long.
Avatar n tn The other day my mom told me she thinks he is in his final stages. He eats, but it losing weight. He was once fat, but I've noticed that you can feel his spine and he just doesn't seem as playful and fast as he used to. He doesn't meow as loud as I remember and I am just worried. It is going to be awful when he goes...I just hope I am wrong about the whole situation.
971443 tn?1282560078 My older male cat started loosing fur on his stomach few months back... Now he has really really short fur on his tummy, I don`t know if it`s growing back - but it seems it isn`t, it`s just really short, so his stomach is practically bald... He rarely goes out and is a generally healthy cat (tho a bit overweight)... What could this be? Any advice?
11317982 tn?1417190802 We think she might be older than 14 or 15, and for the past year or so has been looking like an older girl (not quite as sleek and shiny), a little weaker, etc.
1488319 tn?1359537694 Well since the 2 came out one of them has started to loose weight where you can really feel the back bones, but her attitude is the same (playing and friendly and not overly sleeping) and as far as we can tell is eating fine. We have recently switched her to wet food (about half a can a day) with her dry food as the other cat does not eat any type of wet food, does like anything except dry cat food, so will not be stealing food. We wonder if that is what has been going on.
Avatar n tn Concerns I've been eating over my calories I do not Exercise? but is about too.why I don't lose or gain anymore? Going to join this community...I need this about to get my treadmill fix and get an exercise bike and go back to the gym...Everyone has good advice...
Avatar n tn As far as exercise, get some weights and do some weight training, or do some push-ups. Cardio is not necessary for losing weight. In fact, I believe that running too much can be bad for you. That's a whole other topic of conversation. Stick to high-intensity workouts for shorter periods & you'll be healthier. Also, remember that it's not what you do at the gym that makes you look/feel great, it's what you do at home in the kitchen that counts.
203342 tn?1328737207 Today I took Misha for her annual vaccines. Since she gets so stressed going to the vet they usually try to give her benedryl to relax her and keep her for awhile. It was supposed to help keep her from throwing up in her kennel too. No dice, didn't work. She still threw up before we even left while I was talking to the vet.
207091 tn?1337709493 it is immediately apparent whether eating is adequate, or occurring at all AND when a pet is ill, there are still fallback foods as yet untried with which to tempt an older sick cat that may not be eating. (Hold your fire with food changes, young cat owners!) 3. (She is not eating her dry food at all.) May be "finickiness" as described in #2 above or painful dental disease. Get it checked out. 4.
Avatar f tn Thank you I'm kinda devastated he only started losing weight a month and a half ago and I just found out he was sick a little less than a month ago so it's extremely hard I feel like I lost my son..
691935 tn?1421027090 Our cat is 16 years old, started losing weight and her stomach is huge..When I took her to the Vet, she was a little anemic, and was hoping for a possible parisite. Put her on anitibiotics & vitamins. The FIP results came back negative and the Vet did further tests on fluid to confirm. Vet did Thyroid tests - normal. Yesterday, he found a large tumor. He put her on lasik to try to eliminate the fluid. I don't know what I should be doing.
Avatar n tn My cat is 13 years old. She was eating hard food up until a few months ago, then she was not eating very much so I switched her to soft food. She has some bad teeth so I figured that it probably hurt to eat hard food. She loved the soft food and has eaten it steadily for the last few months. She also has a thyroid problem that I give her medicine for. She has still gotten very skiny. As of yesterday, she has not eaten anything. I am not sure what to do or what is causing this.
