Olanzapine and weight gain

Common Questions and Answers about Olanzapine and weight gain

zyprexa

Avatar m tn Many medications used to treat mental illness cause weight gain in many users. Different meds have different effects, so while one might result in weight gain, others won't. It's trial and error. When the only drug that works causes a lot of weight gain, that's a big problem.
Avatar f tn Yes and it worked well as a mood stabilizer/anti-psychotic but I had a severe problem with weight gain as did other people I know who have taken it and that's relatively common. However, it is an effective mood stabilizer though I know the most likely out of the anti-psychotics to cause this problem. It is definitely worth going back on medication though I might ask about something else.
Avatar n tn m guessing SSRIs may not be the best choice for you. I have no idea if the weight gain from divalproex and/or olanzapine will level out or just keep going. Wellbutrin causes weight loss in some people, unlike a lot of psych meds. It can also cause constipation. It's generally energizing, so it might be good if you're feeling low on energy (make sure to take it in the morning). I'm on Wellbutrin and Lamictal, and they're working pretty well.
Avatar n tn Both drugs cause similar side effects, but Olanzapine shows fewer motor function side effects than Resperidone in comaparative clinical trials. Both drugs have found to be equally safe on clinical trials. Both cause weight gain, but weight gain with Resperidone is lesser than that with Olanzapine. So once you start treatment, your doctor may adjust your prescription to a higher dose if the starting dose is not effective.
Avatar f tn I'm no longer on olanzapine and I did not know about the posiable drug interaction untill I saw a new Dr recently and started asking why I might be getting leg pains so bad. I did ask her about olanzapine being connected to the pain but she said there should be no lasting so effect's from it now that I'm off the med. I asked her if olanzapine can be stored in the fat cell or anything as I gained 35 kg from olanzapine and when I lost 10kg fairly fast I wonder if there was conection.
Avatar f tn Hi im desperatly in need to know of a good bipolar medication that doesnt make me gain weight, I was on olanzapine and I gained loads, then they put me on abilifyand I got 13 of the uncommon side effects, then they put me on sulpiride but they are similar to olanzapine, and all the time ive been on lamotrigine, but they dont seem to work as well on their own. At the mo ive stopped taking my meds and finding it hard, can anyone help please?
Avatar f tn Have to fight pretty hard to avoid problems and weight gain lead to too much glucose (sugar) in body once a few years ago. But tried mirtazapine again in 2010 and now and it seems to be helping the depression with less problems than effexor like nausea and strange dreams. But now weight is going back down and I shop for more fruits and drink diet soda's. I know there are healthier things to drink, but it was on sale.... :) Cranberry juice is healthy too.
603015 tn?1329862973 Hi I have started to tapper off olanzapine because of the weight gain, I have noticed that after just a week on the reduced amount I have started to have sleep problems, I am finding it harder and harder to get to sleep, then when I do get to sleep I am waking through the night, could this be the reduction in the med and what should I do if anything, im not due to see me pdoc until 1 june when I would be fully off this med.
Avatar n tn As you can see, Effexor is amongst the least likely to cause weight gain, and in fact, is known to contribute to weight loss. You may wish to try an alternative on the list above. It is unclear why anti-depressants cause weight gain. Here are some possibilities: • Overeating, as a result of depression, can cause weight gain, esp if the person had lost weight in the pretreated depression • Most anti-depressants, mood stabilizers and antipsychotics are also anti-histamines.
Avatar n tn He said that it does not lead to weight gain, but when I checked online, some sites say it leads to weight gain and others to weight loss. Could you tell me what it is actually? Is it weight loss or weight gain?
698408 tn?1256958348 I and other people have found Lamictal to be more tolerable and it does not cause weight gain and generally not cognitive confusion. You could ask about Lamictal. For information google "Depression Central" (it has information about all mood disorders and mood stabilizers).
Avatar f tn Hi, I was recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder, but have been on the medication for it since 2009. I experienced a lot of weight gain (40 pounds) on this medication (olanzapine), and it just added to my depression and made me miserable and totally unconfident. Also, although I haven't experienced a full-blown manic episode in a while, my depressive episodes have become harder and harder to cope with.
Avatar f tn I have tried Seroquel (I reacted badly to that and had to come off it after a week), Depakote (which made me gain weight and left my mood very flat and did not help with the irratibility) as well as various anti-depressants (which of course made bipolar worse) and Metazapine (which caused muscle twitching). Is anybody else taking Zyprexa, if so how have you found it. Any advice, experiences would be much appreciated. I am finding the whole thing very difficult.
Avatar f tn Hello,`I am new at this soo.. i was diagnosed a yr ago and was put on effexor that didn't help, and serequel for racing thoughts. then my doc put me on wellbutrin xr that was ok for a couple of months but my depression has worsed tremendously and i am taking wellbutrin xr 200 mg, serequel 50mg, and clonapin. the wellbutrin has no effect on me at all and i was actually wondering about topamax. i have tried almost every antidepressent and nothing.
Avatar f tn It is indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia and bi polar disorders. Its side effects are weight gain and somnolence (sleepiness). So, once withdrawn it is likely to cause insomnia. Don’t venture to discontinue your medications without consulting your doctor. Discuss your symptoms with your consulting doctor he may prescribe alternate medications. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
1052851 tn?1307741160 I am wondering if there has been a drug similar, that can offer me relief, and not (or minimal), weight gain. It is causing me to get into a depressive state that I cant get out of, because I know dont have clothes that fit me, and I cant bear to look at myself...this is not good for me at all. If you know of/or heard of another medication that may help me without the weight gain! I would really appreciate it.
Avatar f tn aripripazole (abilify) and ziprasidone (geodon) are 2 other atypical antipsychotics like your olanzapine (zyprexa). nobody neither your pdoc can tell their effect on you, it's all trial and error everybody manifests different effect and side effect. he/she only prescribed them to you because they don't make you put on weight gain contrary to zyprexa, that's all.
Avatar f tn I am no Dr. but if that's what your doc said to do...it is probably fine. If you don't feel comfortable you can always ask him/her to ween you off of the olazapine slowly. But, seroquel is a strong drug..so, I think you will be fine. But, again, I am no dr.
Avatar m tn I was on Ziprexa for a few months for bipolar and had to stop because of the weight gain. Couldn't handle it. I've heard it works well for some though.
Avatar n tn What you are noticing is a standard side effect of atypical antipsychotics which are metabolic changes leading to weight gain. That will happen with all of them although Abilify is the least likely but its still common. There's a new one about to hit the market but I believe its has the same side effect profile but we'll see when it comes out.
Avatar m tn See below link for more info on this medicaton http://en.wikipedia.
Avatar f tn If you have weight gain from medication there are other options. Lamictal has less of a chance of weight gain and sedation than Depakoate. Abilify is less likely to cause weight gain and sedation than Zyprexa. Speak to your psychiatrist about this. And there are some good websites listed on the links page with info. such as "Depression Central". Its generally not a good to try to stop weight gain and sedation from medication with a diet pill long term.
603015 tn?1329862973 I know when I see my doctor on monday he is going to suggest Seroquel, I am scared to take this drug as I dont want any weight gain, I have already put heaps on, since using Olanzapine and do not want to add anymore, I have tried Lithium ( gave me the tremor and did little for my stability ) Epilim ( done nothing for depression ) Olanzapine ( worked at 20mg for a while but put heaps of weight on and still had depression ) Lamotrigine ( flipped my mood worked really well but developed the potenti
Avatar f tn Saw the psych yesterday,he wanted to put me on mirtazipine with venlefaxine but I flatly refused as that would make me put on loads of weight and even more obsessed over body image-as i have always had a problem with that too. When i was in hopsitial they put me on olanzapine and then abilify-made me gain over a stone in weight and it took me an age to get it off, I am now struggling to not eat all the time as it is.
