Novolog or humalog

Common Questions and Answers about Novolog or humalog

novolog

Avatar n tn I use a sliding scale of Humalog at mealtimes and I use 14 units of Lantis each evening. Lantis is a 24 cylce insulin or a long acting insulin where Humalog is short term or short acting insulin. But this just shows you that different people have different needs. Before I used Lantis I used to use NPH-which is a shorter long acting inuslin-more like 8 hours. Have you tried giving your Novolin before you eat?
209227 tn?1242346745 Is there a difference between Humalog and Novolog insulins? I was told there are exactly the same. But is this true?
Avatar n tn My pharmacist is telling me that most diabetics use Humalog (and Novolog use is rare). Has anyone else had problems or switched from Novolog to Humalog? Are there Novolog users out there? Thanks....
Avatar n tn i where an minimed insulin pump and i get infections in the insertion site. humalog is not very stabe so maby try novolog or apidra. one reson for this is humalog has a active insulin time of more of 3 but novlog and apidra is 4. also you might want to try a tape kit it is where you put a tegaderm on your stomach and then insert the infusion set over that. usual that will help for some one like your child. i am not advised in the medical feild but i am a user of a pump.
Avatar n tn Mark's right. Switch to Lantus & Novolog/Humalog if you can afford it. Makes for better control. If you can't afford, Novolog or Humalog, use regular.
Avatar f tn t have to take such high amounts of humalog. Is there a medical problem managing or risk in managing his Type 1 diabetes the way he is doing it? What can I say to him? He goes to an internist and not an endocrinologist.
Avatar n tn Depends on how you use your insullin. My doctor gave me an insulin to carbohydrate ratio to use. I use 1 unit of insulin to every 12 grams of carbs I eat. The less carbs I eat, the less insulin I use. I have a very physical job for four hours a day and I don't even need my Humalog when I eat lunch. My pen generally lasts me the whole month. My Humalog is only good for 28 - 30 days.
Avatar n tn For us T2 the its the CARBS not the calories If I eat 100 calories of fat I take 0 novalog and have 0 BG rise If I eat 100 calories of carbs I will have a ~100 Point rise in BG or I take 9 IU of humalog. roy325 you can start with the 500 rule That assumes you eat god knows how much carbs a day and you have no insulin resistance and you make no insulin... a lot of assumptions.
Avatar n tn JackieJo, As you may know, we're not physicians here. While we have considerable personal experience with diabetes, we don't know you or your particulars, so it will be very important for you to meet with a doctor or a certified diabetes educator (CDE) to tailor your transition. As a start, I'd recommend you check in with your local JDRF chapter or branch. They sponsor this Forum and have physical offices all over the US and in several other countries.
Avatar n tn It basically suggests that Lantus, along with Humalog and Novolog might have more dangerous side effects, than the beef or pork-based insulins. However this is ONLY speculation and that particular website is not an authoritive source on the subject.
Avatar n tn Hi Headshot, I'm not a medical professional, just the mother of a type 1, so please keep that in mind. My question would be: When are are you injecting the Novolog? Right when you eat? Or earlier. My daughter's doc wants her to inject her Novolog 10-15 minutes before any food, so it has a chance to start working first. You have to be careful with this, because if you inject too early you can get low.
Avatar n tn com/health/drugs/humalog#humalog-vs-novolog Often Humalog is given with other medication along with it. You may need that approach.
Avatar n tn Oldstuff, Logan would have produced some of his own insulin for some time after being diagnosed. This can go on for years. And it is probably why he was able to achieve good control with supplemental insulin. At this stage, he must be totally dependent on injected insulin. Which makes controlling blood sugar levels a lot more difficult. And it calls for a regimen that gives Logan more control. Biphasic and Regular insulin simply doesn't do that.
Avatar m tn I had much better control when I was using humuln n and humulin r . I am now taking lantus and novolog .I have had to increase my dosages and am still having a hard time getting control of my blood sugars. My aic is 7.8 this quarter vs 8. last quarter. should I go back to using the older drugs that gave me better control?
Avatar n tn m not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes. Humalog and Novolog are different types of fast acting insulin, meaning that they are quickly absorbed into your system to immediately drop your blood sugar. Some people find that one works more effectively than the other, so which is used is really up to the patient. Humulin, more commonly called Humulin NPH, and even more commonly called just NPH, is a long acting insulin.
Avatar n tn You may also want to try a faster acting fast acting insulin other than Humalog. Novolog begins acting slightly faster than Humalog. You could also consider taking your fast acting insulin sooner, so that it is already in your system when you eat. That can help because of the speed with which your food is now absorbed. Organ damage is caused by poor management or lack of management of diabetes over years and years, so you shouldn't be all that concerned yet. Good luck!
1340011 tn?1276617767 The standard is a basal insulin such as Lantus or Levemir and a bolus such as Novolog, Humalog or Apidra. You might want to work with an endo. Sounds like your other problems are complicating your diabetes, hang in there!
Avatar f tn Other options include both pumps (yes, for kids as young as 10 years old) or injections of long-lasting insulins like Lantus to provide a stable rate of ongoing insulin delivery (different for each person) plus either Novolog or Humalog at meals to cover the meals only. It sounds as if the mix is not doing the job properly for your son -- nowadays, you shouldn't have to keep forcing food to catch up with insulin nor should he have to live with high glucose levels several times a day.
Avatar n tn this is for 8 hours of sleep.....dont take it with humalog....humalog is only for when you eat and lantus only when you sleep....You guys have got some bad information and I would be afraid if I had your guy's doctors.... take it before you sleep ...just 25 units...
Avatar n tn I am in my second month of using Lantus with Humalog. At about week 2 or 3 I began experiencing sporadic rash in front of shins. Later, the itching and raised bumps appeared behing the knee at top of calves. Now I think it is appearing at left elbow. General feelings of itchiness accompany the outbreaks without apparent rash. I am attributing this to the new medication - Lantus - as all else remains basically stable in my life routine.
Avatar n tn m 19 been diabetic since I was 4 and and I have gained 15-20 pounds with my new insulin regimen started about 6 months ago.I take humalog on sliding scale 1 unit per 10 carbs and I take it every time I eat and I also take 50 units of lantus at bed time.So my question is can this be causing my weight gain? I think the lantus initially caused me to gain about 20lbs. to begin with 6yrs. ago and I'm now over weight.I'm on my feet constantly at work 9 hrs.
Avatar n tn action in the morning than you had before, so you may have to adjust your Humalog or Novolog a tiny bit as you do this. I do the 80 percent / 20 percent split, but my identical twin (also a type 1 diabetic) finds that a 50 percent split in both doses works best for her. So each of us is different. Please don't try my percentage, but start with the one unit at a time procedure in order to protect yourself from night lows. And do discuss with your endocrinologist.
Avatar n tn tomorrow and I am looking for some input on this pen. I have never heard that the pen is innacurate but did read tonight that the Humalog pen must be held to the skin for a count of five---that could be ugly. We can't use the Lilly pen anyway because we need one with half units. I guess we would have to change to Novolog to use their pen. Any pen users with children have input???
704262 tn?1247674638 I take Novolog and Lantus insulin in the pen forms. I just started taking them like this about 6 weeks ago. I really like them!!! I take the Novolog 5 units in the morning and 5 units in the evenings, with meals. I also use a sliding scale with it. The Lantus I take just before bedtime. Right now, I'm at 25 units, from 45 units 3 weeks ago!!! I've found that when I take both just before bed, my morning fasting blood sugars are really low...like below 80.
