Common Questions and Answers about Norvasc time to work

norvasc

Avatar f tn We usually start patients on long acting oral nitrates (imdur 30 mg daily) because it starts acting fast and then transition the patient to norvasc which takes about 4 days to work. In addition to the nitrates and the norvasc, we also use statins and antidepressants as well. The latter have been shown to help as well.
2095551 tn?1333122531 There are other calcium channel blockers like Norvasc out there that may not produce as much swelling. I would talk to your doctor to see if there is a different medication you could try. You also might want to consider adding a beta blocker like atenolol especially if you have a high pulse rate as this can cause your blood pressure to be higher.
Avatar n tn Is okay to take 2.5 mg of Norvasc, 120mg Cardizem and Topamax? This discussion is related to Discontinuation of Norvasc.
Avatar f tn For 3yrs I had controlled HT w/Lisin/HCTZ 20/25 & Norvasc 5mg. I was a very healthy 44yo Fe, 4'10 110lbs. In Jan 07 my ins co said they wanted me to switch from Norvasc to Lotrel because they were "the same". My Dr kept me on the Lisin/HCTZ & added Lotrel 5/40. 12 days later I collapsed. At the ER my BP was 56/48, I was discharged 3 hrs later at 80/54. Things haven't been the same since.
Avatar m tn during her hospital visit and the possibility of a pacemaker in the future, but she is the very first in this large group to suggest anything may even need to ever be done. My question is this- am I just a worried daughter thinking that she is at unnecessary risk for a stroke or heart attack that could be prevented with a more attentive/ aggressive treatment plan or should I expect more?
Avatar f tn The second day on the Benicar I did good but when I left work I forgot to go to pharmacy for Norvasc so I was gong after dinner. Before I had the chance within a 2 minute time frame my heart rate went from normal to 160 bpm and would not stop. Went to er where they did blood work and said all blood work looked normal. I experienced the racing and shortness of breath for about 2 to 3 hours off and on. Er doc said probably some tachardia due to stopping the beta blocker I had been on for years.
Avatar f tn and the third, suggested to gradually replace the tenormin by 5 mg Norvasc, and to be increased if needed, to 10 mg. Having read so much about Hypertension and its medications, I'm inclined towards the second opinion, i.e. 50 mg tenormin in combination with 5 mg Norvasc. However, I don't have a problem with the first opinion. My problem is with the third; I prefer to keep taking Tenormin. I Think it is also important to say that I have no side effect problems from Tenormin.
Avatar f tn I'm a 64 yrs. old woman who used to take Diovan 320 mg. & Toprol 50 mg. for my B.P. My B.P. readings was okay but my Doctor discontinued the Toprol because my heart rate usually on the 40's. I am currently taking Norvasc 5mg. with the Diovan 320 mg. So far, my B.P. readings is very good, 110/70. But eversince I started the Norvasc, my left leg is swelling and it is becoming worst. I'd like to ask my Doctor to discontinue the Norvasc.
Avatar f tn It was decided to add Norvasc 5mg INSTEAD of Nifedipine, since Norvasc was used/tolerated well in the past. Began taking Norvasc 5mg along with Lorsartan 100mg and Atenolol 25mg (all 1x daily) approximately 3 days ago, and the blood pressure is still running extremely high. This morning reading was 186/85 and tonight 176/110!!! Worried that this can be dangerous. What should be done? How long until the BP goes to a "normal" range? Does the doctor need to increase the Norvasc dosage?
Avatar f tn Norvasc 10 mg 1 x day was prescribed to take instead of Clonidine .1mg 2 x day. However, the Norvasc is not working after 12 hrs. My B/P is 150/113 12 hrs after taking the norvasc. Can I take a clonidine .1 mg along with the norvasc?

Avatar m tn I've been on 50mg of Atenolol for years, and it's done the job well enough. In the past six-eight months or so, I've noticed that my blood pressure has been having a hard time getting under 140/80. It gets under, but it doesn't stay there for very long. When I told my cardiologist, he said we should try to up my Atenolol. I declined to do so because Atenolol gives me brachycardia to the point where my pulse can be as low as the high 40s when I'm sleeping.
1243333 tn?1296446902 I take 10mg of norvasc twice a day, along with a 100mg of topral xl twice a day, and 300/320 of valturna, just recently the cattapress was increase to 3 initally it seemed to work - was on the hydrochlorothiazide but it was causing my heart to pause, so they stopped it, not sure why the spirolactone except maybe that I have trouble maintaning potassium levels.
Avatar m tn After bugging the doc enough about why at 32 i have to take 3 meds to keep BP under control he has finally set me up to see a kidney specialist. I have been experiencing soreness and weakness in my elbows, like tendonitis, extreme fatigue and burning in my arms when doing light work, tiredness and overall fatigue, since beginning these meds.
Avatar f tn I will try to figure out how to post a question to the internal medicine forum.
404682 tn?1324579818 You may be accustomed to a higher blood rate so when the meds cause your BP to drop it may take time for your body to get used to the lower levels which will make you lightheaded. It takes time for your bidy to get used to the effects of a lower than expected BP. You should work with your doctor to find a drug that works for you.
Avatar n tn Based on a 24 BP monitor, it was discerned I did not need the Atenolol. I was able to cut my dose to 25mg. but cannot get off it. I become irritable, jittery and have a short fuse. Recently, became a vegan and my BP has dropped so I tried to d/c the atenolol once again. Will I ever be able to get off this med. my BP is 101/60 just on 5 mg. of Norvasc.
672586 tn?1280933658 You were posting while I was typing. LOL Now I understand why the switch. In my case, though, I take both a beta blocker (Lopressor) and a calcium channel blocker (Norvasc). I wasn't able to take the Diltiazem. Gave me awful chest pains.
976897 tn?1379167602 I never took another one and told my doctor that I wanted to go back and try the Norvasc. The Norvasc did begin to help after a couple of weeks, adn the spasms started to get less severe and less in occurrences. I wonder if I should have given the Cardizem more time or just be happy with the way the Norvasc is working?
Avatar m tn - CT Scan, originally concerned about hypertensive encephalitis, normal - Echocardiogram, normal - Extensive blood work, everything from basic blood work, to kidney function and kidney hormones, adrenal-related hormones, stress-related hormones, toxicology, all normal except normetanephrines which were slightly elevated (suggestive of Pheochromocytoma, later ruled out via MRI) - Ultrasound of kidneys and adrenals, normal - Doppler ultrasound of renal arteries, normal - MRI of brain and abdomen
Avatar n tn The pain is relieved by a medicine called nitroglycerin (dilates coronary vessels). You have been prescribed norvasc and that should relieve any chest pains. Norvasc is in a group of drugs called calcium channel blockers. It dilates blood vessels and slows the heart to reduce blood pressure and the pain of angina. Calcium channel blockers may be needed long term. Medications may also include beta-blockers. However, in some cases of spastic angina, beta-blockers may be harmful.
Avatar n tn and blood preasure went up during exercise 190/83, but went back down to 150/80 afterward. St jude valve is very loud most of the time. pulse runs around 80.
