Avatar n tn If the problem is your walls are too thick, Calcium Channel Blockers are the drugs they generally use because they help to relax the heart muscle and therefore the filling action of the heart is better. If the walls are too thin, then I would think the Beta Blockers would be the drugs of choice. What are you calling a "small" fainting spell? You either faint or you don't.
Avatar m tn In other cases, people may have no symptoms but are at high risk for dangerously slow heart rates because of disturbances of the electrical system of the heart. A pacemaker may be recommended for these people before symptoms occur. There are no electrical disturbance shown with your post?! Because a wrong decision can be very serious I would hesitate to second quess a doctor's assessment.
Avatar m tn 2) Considering her need for a higher dosage and her occasional heart block, the combo of verapimil and a pacemaker is an appropriate next step. As I recall, a member of this board, scouser costa rica, has a pacemaker like your wife's doctor is recommending and it's working out well for him (he also takes amiodarone to decrease the frequency of afib episodes and to lower his heart rate when it does occur).. 3) There are two types of ablation to consider.
Avatar n tn And two, in the setting of this A fib and a slow heart rhythm, putting in a pacemaker may reduce the amount of atrial fibrillation you're having. But more importantly, the presence of a pacemaker will allow your doctor to put you on anti-arrhythmic medications safely. If you have a tendency for a very slow heart rhythm, if you were placed on and anti-arrhythmic medication, your heart rate may get so slow you could get dizzy or pass out.
Avatar m tn My problem is that I was passing out with the low heart rate. I felt great for the first two weeks after getting the pacemaker. Then, I started passing out again. After some testing, they found that my pacemaker runs me up to 120 BPM and drops to 55 BPM but does not raise to the acceptable heart rate. The techs from St. Jude reprogrammed but again it only lasted for two weeks. They have run EEG's, Sleep studies etc.
754107 tn?1233668478 hi i also have heart block stage 2 with a pacemaker fitted i was diagnosed 2 years ago at the age of 32 i also found out last month that i have svt too .
Avatar m tn A Heart rate below 60 Beats per minute is known as Bradycardia. Many people naturally have resting rates below 60, some into the upper 40s. Athletes, with conditioned hearts, more commonly would have these slower resting rates than non-athletes. Some medications and drugs, including recreational drugs, can cause slow rhythms as well. I have included some links to articles about this disorder and listed some of the less serious causes.
Avatar n tn I had a pacemaker revision 6 months ago when the unit moved out of the pocket and was actually eroding the tissue and skin. The pacemaker unit both times is at skin level and ready to puncture thru the skin. I saw my cardiologist yesterday and he says he absolutely has to be redone. However he wasnt sure whether to try again with the existing site or move the unit to my right side. Both has its pros and cons.
Avatar n tn metoprolol may not correct SOB! The pacemaker has corrected bradycardia!? The pacemaker will override any disruptions of the normal electrical impulses controlling the rate of your heart's pumping action. SOB is almost always a serious symptom...it was the only symptom for the admitting personal to put me in an emergency status, but I had other symptoms, dry cough, hyperventilating when laying down, etc . She said that is all that is needed is SOB.
Avatar f tn When I was at the doctors office they explained that it is working everytime her heart beats. They told us that the lower right side of her heart is bad. They said the pacemaker is set at 60bpm to keep her heart at a steady beat but when her blood pressure is taken the lower number is always in the 80's. I tryed to ask could the pacemaker be set to high for her body.
Avatar m tn It is relevant to mention here that there is no history of heart ailment in the family of my husband and the ECG done incidentally in the month of January 2010 (when he met with an accident and had a trimellular fracture on his left leg) was normal.
Avatar f tn The fact that your stress test and the coronary angiogram are normal is highly predictive of an excellent long term outcome. Was the pacemaker put in after they put you on the verapamil. I am surprised that you needed one. Tell me more about yourself.
Avatar n tn d love to know all about your baby when she arrives!! Good luck with the rest of the pregnancy and get plenty of rest, cuz there will be some early mornings in a few months : ) http://en.wikipedia.

Avatar n tn hi michelle! thanks for your advise.. my BP is typically 90/60 and yes, i am not fond of drinking water and i don't prefer salty foods. i was advised to take meds to bridge the slow heart rate. i was told about the sick sinus, that causes slow heart rate. lowest rate is 49beats/minute highest i got was 63. i don't have a heart failure. and yes i believe this is one of the greatest decision i will make in my life..
Avatar m tn My resting heart beat is 27, and rises if I get up, drive or do any of the normal activity lists. I do sport and then my heart is normal and easily goes over 100 while I am excercising and comes down pretty fast to the thirties. This seems abnormal ? I feel healthy and well though am worried.
970256 tn?1249423974 You did need a pacemaker inserted. When the heart rate is in the 30s the heart can actually stop beating.
Avatar n tn The surgery was accompanied with a maze procedure to normalize the heart beat rate to normal. However, after the surgery she has still been kept on pacemaker as cardiologists said her heart rate is still on 48-55 per minute (which is quite slow). The cardiologists have suggested that if the heart rate does not return back to normal a permanent pacemaker maybe required. Can anyone please suggest whether to wait for the heart beat to be back to normal or go for the pacemaker.
Avatar m tn If you can't get the attention of the heart specialist, I would suggest taking her to the ER of your hospital. Your mother's symptoms are not normal after a pacer is inserted. Also, I'd suggest you reference the card your mother was given by the pacer manufacturer, and call them at once, asking their advice. All Pacemaker manufacturers have reps available to check how the pacer is programmed.
Avatar m tn You did not mentioned if your son was a strong athlete. Many professional athletes have low resting heart rates but I doubt if many of them have one at 25bpm. I am not an athlete but i do exercise. One day at work, I felt lightheaded and had a hard time carrying out my work (I was a middle school principal at the time.) I was totally exhausted by 9:30AM and could not walk out of my office so 911 was called. My heart rate was 28bpm.
1411632 tn?1281642993 I had a halter monitor test done by my PCP and they said they recorded several pauses. One that was 9.5 seconds, one 6 seconds and two 3 seconds. I was referred to a cardiologist who recommended a pacemaker. What are the odds that in that 24 hour halter test there are 4 pauses but now my pacemaker has not recorded any in an 8 month period? I also did not have tachycardia until after the pacemaker implantation.
Avatar m tn Hi Doctor, My bro aged 21 recently jus joined army force as regular, physical fit in average, not really stressful workout in camp as he's a military police. During 1 week ago, he went for full medical check up in camp & founded out by MO his HR is only 36/min. Immediately warded to hospital. 24hour EKG, worst result during resting was 26/min.
Avatar f tn My grandmother had her pacemaker implanted 1 week ago. Is it normal for the area to be bruised, a purple color? She is also experiencing a burning sensation around the area. She is 84 years old and before she had the surgery she was able to walk fine and now she walks a little and she feels very tired and she says she feels like her heart is beating really fast and it might even come out.
Avatar n tn You can have a normal EKG and still need a pacemaker. The RATE on the EKG would be the determining factor. His EKG being normal means that he hasn't had a heart attack, his heart structure is okay, things like that. If his heart rate is 'GOING UP TO 45 beats per minute, (normal heart rate is 60-100bpm with a mean of 72 for men) that's too slow and therefore your father isn't getting enough oxygen to his brain and other body organs, that is why he's short of breath.
Avatar f tn Which means my heart does not pump properly because my heart is enlarged. My doctor sugested the pacemaker in case my heart would just stop. I guess I look at it when its my time to go I am ok with that. I just don't think I am up to the surgery for the implant.
