Common Questions and Answers about Nitrofurantoin for prostatitis

macrobid

Avatar m tn Sounds like, Chronic prostatitis! prostatitis is treated with a long course (6 - 12 weeks or longer) of antibiotics. Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim or Septra) and ciprofloxacin (Cipro) are commonly used. Other antibiotics that may be used include: Carbenicillin, Erythromycin, Nitrofurantoin, Tetracycline. Most antibiotics do not get into the prostate tissue well.
Avatar m tn Doc gave doxy and metronidazole for 10 days which cleared the burning sensation and some testicular and groin pain but not the urgency and frequency to urinate. After those 10 days, one day I woke up and had a hard to time to start peeing and had a very weak stream: new diagnosis - prostatitis. Doc gave me cipro and doxy 8 days with no result. Bactrim for 10 days, no result. As I live in Africa, I went to Portugal to get a second opinion, and the doctor gave me levo for 20 days; no result.
Avatar f tn I have been prescribed nitrofurantoin (macrobid) for a UTI. I have a hard time swallowing pills. Can these be broken up?
Avatar m tn Hence, doctor prescribed some medicines like Uribid with nitrofurantoin in it, Prothiaden M, Montemac FX for allergy and Hifenac-P for fever and also Cital syrup for UTI. My mother continued the course for one week, now fever and tiredness have decreased, but the burning sensation continues. Is this mixture of tablets fine, or any other suggestion or recommendations for treating this urinary tract infection of K.Oxytoca.
Avatar m tn I am given a weeks course of nitrofurantoin. Meanwhile I take STD tests for Gonorrhea, chlamydia, UTI and HIV etc. All of these came back negative. Week 3 - Symptoms are persistant - particularly the burning sensation. I am then given a weeks course of Ciprofloxacin, which makes little difference. I am also given a Fluconazole tablet for Thrush (just in case.
Avatar m tn 9 days ago Nitrofurantoin (200g a day for 5 days) was taken and daily birth control (Qlaira). Both are known to decrease levels of haptoglobin but nothing about complete depletion. Could this be an extended effect from Nitrofurantoin? When should the test be repeated ?
Avatar m tn A couple of weeks later I developed a urinary tract infection. Urologist prescribed nitrofurantoin for the infection. Immediatedly after starting the antibiotic my ears gradually starting feeling clogged. Now, two weeks later, they are both very clogged (no wax buildup) and I can barely hear. Logic tells me the ear clogging is somehow connected to the nitrofurantoin. Has anyone ever experienced this or heard of this happening? Will this clogging go away by itself?
Avatar f tn I have recently been feeling unwell and have recurring UTI’s and been on Nitrofurantoin. I also take levothyroxine for an under active thyroid. I recently had a LFT and my ALT was 934. My GGT was 140 and bilirubin 37. I am having an urgent scan tomorrow but the drs seem at a loss as to what is causing this? Any advice or help?
Avatar f tn Does anyone have experience with long term antibiotic treatments? How long does typical treatment for chronic UTIs last? I am worried about taking antibiotics for more than a year.
Avatar f tn I’ve been suffering from IC for 5 years now and for some odd reason Nitrofurantoin/Macrobid seems to work well for me, even when my urine culture comes back negative. I take it (100 mg X 2 for 10 days) when my IC flares and within a few days the symptoms are essentially gone. They often come back 3-5 months later, but at least it works temporarily. My doctors have no idea why this medication works, but it’s been working pretty consistently for the past 3-4 years now.
Avatar f tn I took nitrofurantoin for a UTI infection and finished my course on Tuesday morning. Yesterday (Friday), I noticed what appears to be hives (small raised bumps with no redness, they didn’t itch) on my legs. I counted 13 - primarily on my thighs and shins. They appear to be gone today, but after I took my puppy for a walk this morning, I noticed small red bumps on my feet and they itched. Is this an allergic reaction to the antibiotics?
Avatar n tn Drugs other than Levaquin, prescribed for the treatment of prostatitis, include Bactrim, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, carbenicillin, nitrofurantoin, and tetracyclines like doxycycline. You may not be able to take ciprofloxacin as it is of the same group as Levaquin and may cause an allergic reaction as well. You will need to discuss the option of treatment with these antibiotics with your urologist. The course of treatment may last for 6-8 weeks or longer depending on the infective organism.
Avatar f tn I have been taking ciprobid, doxyl and nitrofurantoin for a month now. but still the is no change. I still have some pains. I was diagnosed with an UTI, in the urine and blood test the was no Chlamydia, gonorrhea or syphilis in short no STI. But and the doctor, prescribed ciprobid, doxyl and nitrofurantoin for me and my wife. I have visited the doctor 3times and the last tested I did.
Avatar m tn There is no reason for you to worry about unprotected sex with your partner. Bacterial prostatitis, if that is what you have, is not an STD. Are you sure he felt you had that? 4. On risk assessment, prior to dx of GU or NGU and drinking meds, there was an encounter with my gf where she gave me a handjob, the only contact with my fluid I guess is when I came and wiped it with tissue.
Avatar n tn I visit the doctor again and she gave me Nitrofurantoin antibiotics and after taking them once, instantly my erections returned and tests returned to normal size -I am taking 100mg twice in a day . The next day I woke up and my erections were gone again and testes shrunk, I took Nitrofurantoin and nothing is happening . I’m so scared I have phoned 111 and told them this and they told me to Go to my doctor again - the doctor said she gave me antibiotics already and refused to see me !
Avatar n tn A MD prescribed 2 grams of azithromycin one time for this a week ago. I also have had a previous bout of prostatitis due to Proteus (years ago). My questions are 1. What was my risk of stds (gonorrhea, chlamydia, HIV, NGU could happen), 2. Would this medication address the STDs and 3. Do I need a "test of cure"?
Avatar m tn I had TURP surgery 5 months ago and contracted an infection from the catheters (3). I've been on antibiotics for months and little improvement.
