Avatar f tn A sulfite reaction is different from a sulfonamide allergy (a reaction to sulfa drugs) because sulfites and sulfonamides are entirely different chemicals and have unrelated mechanisms of reaction. A person sensitive to sulfites is no more likely to be allergic to sulfonamides than any other individual and vice versa. " http://www.itmonline.org/arts/sulfa.
Avatar f tn I have been prescribed nitrofurantoin (macrobid) for a UTI. I have a hard time swallowing pills. Can these be broken up?
Avatar n tn I visit the doctor again and she gave me Nitrofurantoin antibiotics and after taking them once, instantly my erections returned and tests returned to normal size -I am taking 100mg twice in a day . The next day I woke up and my erections were gone again and testes shrunk, I took Nitrofurantoin and nothing is happening . I’m so scared I have phoned 111 and told them this and they told me to Go to my doctor again - the doctor said she gave me antibiotics already and refused to see me !
Avatar m tn I would ask the doctor and/or pharmacist if the tingling will go away after she gets off the Nitrofurantoin and if so then if she can tolerate it and it is working well then you can either up to dose of neurontin or try to tolerate it until the antibiotic is finished. If not then switch. I would not go off anything until talking to the doctor. Depending on the dose of Gabapin, she may have to taper off of it as you cannot go off of it immediately. You will get rebound insomina.
Avatar f tn I woke up on thursday morning with a sore throat and a cough, on Friday morning i noticed a rash on my face and it is still there. Has any one had a reaction like this?
Avatar m tn 9 days ago Nitrofurantoin (200g a day for 5 days) was taken and daily birth control (Qlaira). Both are known to decrease levels of haptoglobin but nothing about complete depletion. Could this be an extended effect from Nitrofurantoin? When should the test be repeated ?
Avatar m tn I have just got to 3 days on nitrofurantoin for uti, dizziness and headache got too bad as side effects. And now I'm losing my hearing too, no wax. It's inside and pain all over my face. Still dizzy, hearing been getting worse all day. Very quick. It's definitely the nitrofurantoin. I wondered as it says it can swell the salivary glands, cause sore throats and constant cold if it's to do with thst or a part of the nerve damage side effect? Did it resolve for you?
Avatar f tn I have recently been feeling unwell and have recurring UTI’s and been on Nitrofurantoin. I also take levothyroxine for an under active thyroid. I recently had a LFT and my ALT was 934. My GGT was 140 and bilirubin 37. I am having an urgent scan tomorrow but the drs seem at a loss as to what is causing this? Any advice or help?
Avatar n tn If I am allergic to tetracycline, a sulfa drug, would I be allergic to diamox, another sulfa drug? This discussion is related to <a href='http://www.medhelp.org/posts/show/304392'>pseudo papilledema</a>.
Avatar f tn But and the doctor, prescribed ciprobid, doxyl and nitrofurantoin for me and my wife. I have visited the doctor 3times and the last tested I did. He told I had almost nothing in terms of UTI and in my partner there was an indication that she had UTI, and we were both put on medication, but after the medication, I still feel the pain. We have not been meeting with my partner.
233616 tn?1312787196 I told the ER DR that I had a severe reaction to a sulfa drug in the past and had a bad liver. I was scared! The Dr treated me like i was a complete idiot and told me that I would be fine. Well, 8 hours after taking the 1st pill of MACRObid I became feverish..my fever jumped to 104..I was violently shivering and then I could not breathe! My hubby rushed me back to the ER, and they had me on morphine to calm my heart which was racing at almost 200 bpm and I felt like I was dieing!
Avatar m tn I was prescribed Cipro for and URI. I started to itch so my doctor told me to discontinue it because I am allergic to Sulfa drugs. I have been itching on my thighs, arms, face, hands, ears and elbows. My eyes also swell when I scratch I see bruises. What could possibly be wrong with me.. My blood work was normal.
Avatar n tn It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
Avatar f tn I would say that it potentially could be caused by the sulfa medication. Sulfa drugs have an effect on every body system. If it continues, call the doctor that prescribed to make sure he/she doesn't want to see you.
Avatar f tn The pharmacist had stated that Diamox is a level 2 derivative of Sulfa and that the chance of an allergic reaction is there but small. My big concern is that I was diagnosed with a Sulfa allergy as a child when a Sulfa Based Opthalmic Ointment was used to treat an eye infection and I broke out in hives after using the drug. My daughter used Sulfa Antibiotics to treat a UTI and over the course of a week her face swelled up.
Avatar m tn If methionine is SULFUR and I am allergic to SULFA - two different things, then why would I need to worry about having the liptropic injection? I have had 2 injections so far, with no issues but I know SULFA stays in your system quite awhile and can accumulate to the point where I would have a reaction at some point so if there are even trace amounts of SULFA (not SULFUR) in methionine then I could end up having a reaction.
Avatar f tn 2. It is ok to take both an ACE and ARB and there have been some trials using both for blood pressure management. We just have to be very careful and watch your kidney function because both medications can affect the kidney funtion so make sure your physician checks your kidney function 1-2 weeks after being on both medications. Hope this helps.
Avatar f tn (My weight is about 145 kg, previously has been 188 kg, with a length of 170cm) It started in 2006, I did get nitrofurantoin, but I got only more ill, till I even got over 41 degree fever and an emergency-doctor then prescribed ciprofloxacin which did help (this was in Holland). Since 2008 we are in UK and I have been under treatment at St George, London, till 2010.

Avatar f tn The structure is very specific, and although many other drugs may contain sulfur, oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen and a benzene ring, they are not "sulfa" drugs unless they are arranged as the "sulfa" chain. The original sulfa drugs were antibiotics. My concern is this doctor seems to be in a rush to either do RAI or surgery. He really didn't want to do the surgery because she is getting married in almost a year to this date. I'm scared to death about the RAI.
Avatar f tn My sister had a similar reaction to hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), and the doctor said it was because she was allergic to sulfa. My sister had not put her sulfa allergy on her medical history form at the cardiologist's office, because the sulfa reaction had been so long ago. When the doctor prescribed HCTZ, which evidently has sulfa in it, my sister reacted to that. There are lots and lots of other blood pressure drugs beside the three or so that you have tried.
