Avatar f tn I know this story was linked to here in an earlier post, but here it is again with a great comment by Phyllis Mervine, founder of the California Lyme Disease Association (now known as lymedisease.org). She describes being on the NIH advisory board for the Klempner study, which is used to deny long term treatment to Lyme patients and how the researchers and the NIH betrayed the people's trust. http://www.news-medical.
Avatar f tn Chimerex is another that I read up on yesterday. It is hoped to be used for life threatening viruses and HSV 1 and 2. The DRACO drug, after speaking with the lead scientist, is having funding issues. The money they've received from NIH is running out and is only enough to support one scientist, not the 4 included in the research. They can only receive funding from government entities and well established corps or businesses.
1687929 tn?1319426011 I am accepted into the chiari clinical study. five year natural history study in maryland at NIH. So happy and excited. This will help so much especially since I don't have insurance. Can't wait to get started.
148588 tn?1465778809 gov website, run by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) through its National Library of Medicine, is the most comprehensive such database available to the public in the United States, with listings for more than 210,000 clinical studies both here and abroad. But Smith’s experience exposes one of its little-known limitations: It does not require trial sponsors to disclose charges to patients — and does not even independently vet the listings.
Avatar m tn I have sent my stuff to Dr Oldfields at UVA and working on getting it to NIH as well. If I fit into the study at NIH, all the treatment is free. Both are about 2 hour drive.

15695260 tn?1549593113 A diet that includes sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, carrots, black-eyed peas, sweet red peppers, broccoli, spinach, dairy foods, fish and meat, especially liver, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH). Supplements were not used in the study to get to appropriate levels of Vitamin A because of issues of having 'too much' vitamin A through supplements and other issues that arose. But by changing your diet, you may have some control over your skin cancer risk.
Avatar f tn I have Kaiser insurance and they only use NIH. I may have to appeal to use John Hopkins Pituitary Center if NIH fails to meet my requirements for expertise. My biggest fear is that it's a research/teaching hospital and a resident in training will be assisting in the operation. Has any one had pituitary tumor removal from NIH and can shed some light on their experience?
1580703 tn?1651904887 There was an NIH study involving rats, and the study concluded that the damage varied with the age of the rats. It appears that cells that are in development are more likely to be affected. There was a lesser effect on rats who had developed into adults. Minimal doses of aerosilized prednisone are sometimes necessary to sustain life, and the benefit far outweighs the risk.
Avatar n tn This spring my mother had to join an NIH study to get it; this fall her Oncologist get Medicare to pay for it. It seems very promising. My mother seems to be at the end of a 3.5 year fight with Ovarian Cancer. However, before she got there she entered an NIH study on the effects of Avastin on ovarian cancer. The results were mixed. They were great b/c they dropped her CA-125 and dried up fluid that had been accumulated in her lungs.
12832842 tn?1448728801 I was supposed to be in a study for this at NIH years ago. I declined because of multiple LPs. So it sounds interesting.
333672 tn?1273792789 In fact, I know Dr. Gahl. I was in a clinical study at the NIH about 5 years ago that is studying people with albinism that was started by Dr. Gahl about 15 years ago. At the end of the testing, Dr. Gahl told me that I didn't have the syndrome based on gold standard that they are using right now, but that he thinks I may in the future when research catches up with discovering more gene mutations and he asked if I wouldn't mind being kept in his "undiagnosed diseases" file.
Avatar f tn I have been accepted into the study. I will not know until I meet him if I will participate or not. What are your thoughts oh great one?
Avatar m tn MORE RECENTLY, I APPLIED FOR A NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF HEALTH (NIH) STEM CELL STUDY. THIS DOUBLE BLIND STUDY TOOK STEM CELLS FROM YOUR HIP AND INSERTED THEM INTO DAMAGED AREAS OF THE HEART. THIS $3 MILLION DOLLAR 3 YEAR STUDY ASKED THAT I PAY WHATEVER COSTS MEDICARE AND MY INSURANCE WOULD NOT PAY....WELL FOLKS, MEDICARE HAS NO CODE FOR PAYMENT. IF MY CARDIOLOGIST HAD NOT POINTED THIS OUT TO ME. I WOULD HAVE BEEN ON THE HOOK FOR MY LIFES SAVINGS.
757137 tn?1347196453 A huge NIH study AREDS-2 is underway but won't conclude for several years. It's looking at whether taking a multivitamen plus lutein/omega 3 will prevent age related macular degeneration from developing. AREDS-1 showed that for people with dry macular age degeneration that a multivitamen plus Vit A,C,E, zinc, copper slowed the progression of dry ARMD.
Avatar n tn Here is a lengthy, quite recent study regarding the performance of this lens, based on patients' responses, from the NIH website: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.
