Niaspan vs niacin all the time

Common Questions and Answers about Niaspan vs niacin all the time

niaspan

Avatar m tn I cannot find any literature on the matter. Niaspan will certainly address the low HDL. However, can you clarify whether (1) Niaspan would treat fatty liver and (2) is Niaspan's use contradicted with those diagnosed with fatty liver disease?
Avatar n tn I CAN NO LONGER AFFORD NIASPAN, CAN I TAKE NIACIN OVER THE COUNTER OR VITAMIN B3 WILL IT HELP THE SAME I WAS TAKING 500MG AT BEDTIME
Avatar m tn Starting in July 2007 I followed this suggestion, taking 1,500mg slow-release niacin with the Lipitor. I have biannual blood tests. The past three tests, 7-07, 12-07, and 6-08 showed my cholesterol to be 149, 85, and 57mg. LDL 65, 26, and 16mg. Triglycerides 183, 29, and 36mg. HDL 47, 53, and 34mg. These were dramatic improvements, except for the HDL. I am advised the 'good' cholesterol range is 50-200mg. If mine goes below 50mg in the next test do I have a problem?
475570 tn?1280941363 I just want to add that this was a study of Niaspan - the time release version of Niacin - and not Niacin.
Avatar m tn You may want to try the Niacin (Niaspan is Niacin), it will definitely increase your HDL. I'm told that if you take it with aspirin it lessens the effect of the facial flushing. Also, a fatty liver is common in overweight individuals, the doctors I volunteer with have no issues prescribing cholesterol meds to individuals with fatty livers. It is very important, however, that you get your blood panel checked every 6 months or so to watch out for changes in your liver function.
Avatar n tn I am not going to go on a lowfat diet as I do not want then to lower anymore.. Thats the problem.. all my other numbers are fine... he thinks the reason it may be low is becuase I do not eat enough good fat and too many carbs... I do not smoke, do not eat read meat maybe oncea week.. I do eat alot of pasta , rice , fruits, crackers.. Only one serving of protein a day... Now I ahve added two tbls. of flaxseed to diet.... cut out white rice and pasta... eat tuna twice a week, a tbls.
Avatar n tn CRP does not always indicate your arteries are inflamed , the inflammation could be from one of a number of sources. I'm on Niaspan because its one of the few treatments that can raise HDL while lowering LDL and increasing LDL particle size. If you are worried about CRP, the statins are really good at lowering this number, independently of what they do to your chol. numbers.
Avatar n tn I am Ricky7023. I'm sorry it took so long to get back to you. Either the system or I screwed up. I couldn't get back in under Ricky7023 (forgot the password, couldn't get the system to send me another). The drug in question is Niaspan and the person saying the study couldn't have shown a link between the drug and cancer was a cariologist who wanted to proscribe the niaspan. I don't know that any of that matters, of course.
Avatar n tn Well, when you worry your blood pressure will go up. It feeds on itself. There's a new study out that showed Niacin can reverse stenosis (blockages). The intake was rather high but it's now clinically proven. A statin, like liptor or zocor can also reverse stenosis. If I were you I'd be thinking about all the ways the blockages can be reversed and attack it from all fronts. Medication, niacin, diet, exercise, lose weight if you have to.
Avatar n tn My liver naturally overproduces for some reason, and no specialist can seem to figure out why after all these years. Once I was started on the 2000 mg of Niaspan, along with the 60 mg of Zocor, my over-all cholesterol levels have ranged from 90 to 110 (which is where both my GP and my cardiologist want it to be). I can't remember my other levels at the moment..too many numbers to remember along with my T4 and T3 levels.
7052683 tn?1392938795 I mean it is hard to eat out and not go off the diet. Regarding the Niaspan, the most recent study said that although the lab work looked ok the real difference in actually decline in heart attacks and so forth clinically didn't change. The lab work for the Triglycerides did make a difference though. Also, if you did go on this diet I noticed our LDL went down but our HDL also went down. The Family practice doc didn't understand why.
Avatar n tn Thank you for your comments. I was talking with my husband about this and we agreed that 2 new meds may have contributed to this picture: Lovenox and Sectral. The other cardiac meds, while potentially hepatotoxic (i.e., Warfarin, Verapamil) have been longstanding and I've had many blood tests while on these with normal results. It could be that the introduction of Lovenox and Sectral just tipped the scale. I have put in a call to my cardiologist and am awaiting his response back.
Avatar n tn Lipitor can increase HDL by approx 15% which would help. I would think twice about Niaspan as the most recent data suggests that the HDL that is artificially created by Niacin is not as effective against LDL as naturally occurring HDL. If you're healthy, you can increase HDL with exercise, just speak to your doctor first. Lipitor is a very safe and effective drug. In addition to the cholesterol lower properties, statins are also being proven to lower inflammation which is huge.
Avatar f tn At that time I also started working out and on my next test my HDL was 43 right at 6 months later. I stopped taking Niaspan at that time because I did not care for the flushing side effect. After stopping, my HDL has fluctuated between 43 - 40 so I'm of the opinion that the Niaspan added about 3 of the 7 points increased and attribute the rest to exercise.
Avatar n tn When I was in the hospital with the first heart attack my cardiologist started running all kinds of tests and found that I had an elevated LPa reading of 52 and explained that it was a genetic form of cholesterol of which my regular doctor had never checked for nor did I even had a clue it existed. My cardiologist started me on niaspan 500mg and we when up to 3gms per day plus zocor 20mg per day.
Avatar m tn From what I have read, as far as niacin goes, only high-dose niacin (such as prescription Niaspan) will have an effect on HDL and you must be monitored with blood tests to make sure there is no ensuing liver damage. Good luck... I have the HDL same problem.
Avatar m tn I would ask to be seen by an interventional cardiologist first before deciding on the CABG. Because of the severity of the stenoses, especially in the LAD I would not put this off and would probably expedite the process. It is mostly the doctor's experience that allows him to estimate % stenoses. In reality there is very little difference as far as the recommendation goes between 90 and 99%.
Avatar m tn I have been taking 1000 mg Niaspan for six years to treat genetically high Lipoprotein(a). Now my physician wants to stop the Niaspan and begin a very small dose of Crestor. His reason is due to a recent study indicating Niaspan as a risk of causing bleeding and/or infection problems. I have already had one bad experience with another statin, Advicor, that resulted in me having permanent lymphedema in my ankles and legs. Now I am unsure about Niaspan.
Avatar n tn 3) Response to over-the-counter supplements vary from person to person, so the effect of niacin vs. fish oil on your triglyceride level is unknown. 4) There is some evidence that coenzyme Q10 may help with statin-induced muscle pain, but there is not any well-documented studies to support its use.
Avatar m tn How to Naturally Avoid and Remove Dangerous Arterial Plaque The arteries are major blood vessels that the heart uses to pump blood from the heart to the rest of the body. Over time, arterial walls can become congested with a fatty substance known as plaque. When this happens to a severe point, the arteries may begin to harden and the blood flow can become compromised and ultimately result in a heart attack. Mainstream medicine's approach for treating plaque is to use drugs or surgery.
