Avatar n tn When I complained about the side effects to my doctor, he said that sometimes patients have fewer side effects if they take ibuprophen at the same time. I tried that for a week but found taking the ibuprophen did nothing to lower my side effects, so I stopped.
Avatar m tn If you have diabetes or higher than normal blood sugar levels, you should carefully check your blood sugar levels, especially during the first few months of NIASPAN and during any change in your dose. Report any changes in your blood sugar levels to your health care professional. Hypothyroid (high TSH) has a huge effect on cholesterol levels. When your TSH gets back to normal your triglicerides should improve also. You could also ask for an A1C blood test.

7052683 tn?1392938795 If you are on a very high dose of Niaspan then less common side effects can be fever, diarrhea, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, headache and rash. But my husband is on 500mg with no problem. I don't know what they consider a high dose. The Niaspan is only really for lowering your Triglycerides not the cholesterol. The new data that has come out shows it doesn't really work on the cholesterol only the triglycerides. The cough, and sore throat are not symptoms of Niaspan.
Avatar n tn Well, it depends on what kind of medication you are on. I am taking Niaspan for cholestoral and these are the side effects of it. When your body have enough of these vitamins, it flushes out of body like this. It is advised by proffessionals to take an aspirin half an hour before taking Niaspan to avoid this flush. In my case, I simply stopped taking Niaspan and seek alternative from my doctor. It is always good to see doctor in such cases. I hope this is helpful to you.
Avatar m tn I wanted to also share with you a side effect of Niaspan is gout. If you never had it before, and start to more than likely it's the Niaspan that caused it. My husband was on Niaspan for a a couple of yrs. well, for the last yr. before discontinuing it, he kept getting flare-ups of gout. He started to get it more often than not. Also, the flare-ups were unbearable, to wear he couldn't go into the office because he couldn't put his shoe on.
Avatar n tn In an effort to increase my HDL, I take Niaspan & Zocor.....Recently my MD upped the Zocor from 5mgl. to 10mgl.... Last couple weeks, have had more trouble sleeping, usually waking up after a dream (not nightmares, but somewhat vivid dreams)...I've checked out few sites, & saw that statins can cause sleep problems....Have others here had sleep problems while taking a statin?........
Avatar n tn Crestor is an atypical statin in that it raises the HDL by 5-10%, but more importantly decreases through pleomorphic effects the crp level, There is some data that increasing HDL with Niaspan and gemfibrozil in men decreases mortallity if their initial HDL is below 35-40. I would probably start a statin, and see what happens to your ldl and hdl. If the hdl remains low, then I would add gemfibrozil to raise it ( since Niaspan did not work).
Avatar f tn //www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/high-blood-cholesterol/in-depth/statin-side-effects/art-20046013 I would talk to your doctor about the best course of action. If supplementation will help, medication or a switch in statin.

My new PCP doctor (endocrinologist) is specifically concerned about CRP reading in conjunction w/history of heart disease in my family.
Avatar f tn My blood sugar has recently been elevated. I have no family history of Diabetes. Could this elevation be due to side effects of some of these medications I'm taking?

790137 tn?1318064425 Trprol may cause changes in your blood sugar levels. Also, this medicine may cover up signs of low blood sugar, such as a rapid pulse rate. Your doctor should assess the adequacy of your medication. Appropriately a blood test known as the hemoglobin A1c may be performed to assess your blood sugar control over the past three-month period. Kidney and liver functions should also be evaluated.
Avatar f tn 5 packets of Stevia is the equivalent sweetness of 10 teaspoons of sugar. Stevia is 200 times sweeter than sugar and does not raise your blood sugar or cause cravings. Stevia tastes pretty good and is natural, not artificial. Thanks for the hibiscus tea suggestion -- I might try it sometime.
Avatar f tn I believe elevated blood sugar is a possible side effect, but all you can do is have your doctor monitor your blood sugar closely, as I am sure he will want to do for you. Healthy diet and exercise is recommended for everyone to help ward off diabetes, and especially for those with a family history -- even without taking the Abilify into consideration. I hope it works well for you.
Avatar f tn I had my first experience with Solu-Medrol infusion in early August. My relapse had just started and was worsening daily-right before I was due to start training for my new job! The immediate side-effects were quite obvious and well documented. I'm having less success finding out about long-term side-effects-in particular, rapid weight gain. I noticed the bloating quite early in my treatment, especially in my face and abdomen.
Avatar f tn The first day I ate nothing after I took the pill and only started feeling hungry when it was wearing off in time for the night pill. I felt spacey all day from not eating (like low blood sugar) but I had no appetite whatsoever. When I took the night pill, I was up the whole night. It's almost like a shot of adrenaline. It is worrying me. I took my morning pill and the same thing happen.
Avatar n tn Check out the side-effects of Lipitor. That particular statin has a lot of side-effects, some very serious. There is a website (not sure of the web address but you can Google it) called Stopped Our Statins. There is a lot of good information on there. I would look at the side-effects of the Lipitor before panicking that it might be something else. There are many new statins out there that don't cause so many side-effects. Hope this helps.
1806721 tn?1554333407 My questipn, however, is about whether statin drugs will raise blood sugar, causing pre-diabetes or diabetes? My paternal grandma has type 1 and my maternal uncle has type 2 diabetes. In the past 6 months, besides rapid weight loss, I also experienced fatigue, weakness, cold feet, dizziness, sudden drop of blood pressure, increased thirst and trips to restroom, low grade fever on and off with left side abdominal pain.
