Niaspan ldl

Common Questions and Answers about Niaspan ldl

niaspan

Avatar n tn m on Niaspan because its one of the few treatments that can raise HDL while lowering LDL and increasing LDL particle size. If you are worried about CRP, the statins are really good at lowering this number, independently of what they do to your chol. numbers.
Avatar n tn What is gemfibrozil?..... Yeah, it's been very difficult to raise HDL...Actually, I had higher HDL readings without medication, around 35-38....Medication has lowered HDL, to below 35 & it's also has lowered LDL even further, but I had low LDL before meds....My total cholesterol with meds is typically below 150, trigelcerides are generally under 75, & LDL is typically below 100.....
Avatar n tn s cholesterol sounds about right considering the medication she is on. I take 20 mg of Lipitor a night and 2000 mg of Niaspan. My total cholesterol is 101, HDL 52, LDL 41, Tri are 42. I have had one heart attack. At the time of the MI, my total cholesterol was 198, HDL 32, LDL 139 and triglyceride were 123. For people with existing heart disease, the Optimal LDL is <100 but most Drs now believe that <70 is best. About 30 years, the Drs thought a Total cholesterol of <300 was normal.
Avatar m tn I take Niaspan which is an extended release form of niacin. Niaspan will decrease your LDL and triglycerides and increase your HDL. I would not change your niacin dose w/o talking to your doctor about it. Decreasing the dosage could decrease your HDL. I was taking 1500 mg of Niaspan at one point for about 7 months My HDL was around 42-44 for 3 measurements. It then drop to 32. My cardiologist immediately bumped my Nispan dosage to 2000 mg and my HDL went to 50 a year later.
Avatar m tn I have been taking 2000mg Niaspan daily for the last 18months, helping to raise it from 25 to 30. I run about 9miles a week, work out 3-4X at the gym each week, and drink a glass of red wine every night. I eat nuts every day, take Omega3, and rarely eat red meat - subscribing to a low cholesterol diet. Weight is 185 at 6'3", age 50. LDL is always pretty low - most recently 66.
Avatar n tn No it doesn't mean you have heart disease , the only way to deternine that is to get a angiogram or CT scan of your heart. A low fat/low cholesterol diet will lower your HDL but will also lower your LDL big time..its the ratio of HDL to LDL that's most important. My LDL before I started the niaspan and diet was over 100 and my total was 185 or so. In 6 weeks I have went down to the numbers you see in my first post. My trigs were at 144 and are now in the low 80's.
Avatar n tn I cycle quite a bit now after finding out about the heart disease. Total Cholestrol 121, LDL 61, HDL fluctuates between 36 and 45. Medications on: Metroprolol 25MG to control tachycardia, Lipitor 20MG, Niaspan 1000MG, Nexium 40MG, 81MG aspirin every three days because once a day caused petechia, Krill oil, Depakote 125MG and Klonopin .5MG at bedtime. Had calcium score done a few months ago and score went from 20 (two years ago) to 19 (now).
Avatar m tn My question, if you would be so kind as to entertain, is my internist would like to place me on statins to improve my lipid profile given the above mentioned history. I already take a low dose of Niaspan to help increase HDLs, but he would like to see my LDLs even lower. I hesitate, on the other hand, out of concern for taking such a drug for many years (I hope) with minimal necessity given a pretty darn good lipid profile.
Avatar m tn is very very low at 11.6) VLDL is 101, Dr. guesstimates my LDL is around the 140 area due to improper calculation because of high triglycerides, Glucose serum is 116 but the Dr. said because my A1c is 5.4 that’s good as the Metformin is working as it should be. The Dr. made the following changes in my prescription-he finally gave in to my saying that I would NOT take impastation again and prescribed Niaspan 500-wants me to take twice daily if the (“side affects“) improve (improve?
7052683 tn?1392938795 He was also on Niaspan and only gets the flushing. But he had to go down to every other day on Niaspan. So, you may have to do something like that. If you are on a very high dose of Niaspan then less common side effects can be fever, diarrhea, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, headache and rash. But my husband is on 500mg with no problem. I don't know what they consider a high dose. The Niaspan is only really for lowering your Triglycerides not the cholesterol.
Avatar m tn I am a healthy 50 year old male with family history of ASHD in my father who died at age 57 of the same. I recently (last two weeks) had a Berkley Heartlab panel done with findings of LDL 133 and LP(a) of 102. Also APOe genotype of 3/4. My MD advised Crestor and Niaspan. I took it upon myself to have an Ultrafast CT scan of the heart and the total score came back at 9.54, putting me in the lowest risk category.
Avatar m tn t help me, though. I was able to raise my HDL from 32 to 50 with 2000 mg of Niaspan. The niaspan also lowered my triglycerides and my LDL as well. It is interesting that your triglycerides are going up. Are you eating things like bread? Last year, I had to cut back on my carbs to lower my blood sugar. It also lower my triglycerides and I also lost weight as well (30 lbs over 9 months). I had to avoid certain vegetables like corn and potatoes.
Avatar n tn I have heard that the risk of CAD goes down proportionately with the decrease in LDL. That is, for ever 1% decrease in LDL, the risk of CAD goes down by 1%. I have also heard that for each 1mg (mg rather than %) increase in HDL, the risk of CAD goes down by 2%. Is this correct? Does this formular hold true when the patients LDL and HDL are low to begin with. My LDL went from 80 to 39 and HDL from 50 to 34. So, I have a 51% reduction from LDL lowering.
212161 tn?1599427282 hi just got my blood work back my triglycerides are 480 my cardio dr wanted me to go on niaspan but it causes me to faint . does anyone know how to get them down. without meds i take liptor now but not helping and is 480 really bad .
475570 tn?1280941363 Here is the basis of what they found. They were able to produce additional HDL particles, however the new particles are smaller in size and do not have a protective property against CAD. The naturally occurring HDL in your body is better at doing it's job than the artificially produced HDL. The reason the trial was stopped was because they were not seeing any reduction in cardiac events between the Niacin control group and the placebo control group.
Avatar f tn Genetics plays a significant role in the levels of HDL and LDL in the blood and some medications and exercise programs can shift them one way or another. There is no magic remedy and for a very informative article on lowering LDL levels I suggest searching "lowering LDL levels" - you would locate an article on" theheath.usnews.com" web site containing an article on lowering LDL cholesterol.
Avatar m tn I have already had one bad experience with another statin, Advicor, that resulted in me having permanent lymphedema in my ankles and legs. Now I am unsure about Niaspan. I would appreciate any comments on Niaspan please. Thanks.
Avatar m tn My recent test my LDL was 156, total 223, HDL 53, LDL-P (particle size) 1605, Triglycerides 70. I am doing just about all I can possibly do from a "natural" standpoint. Should I go back on a statin? If so, which one and what dosage? It really terrifies me to take that crap again, but I also don't want to wind up with a clogged artery. Just looking for any advice anyone can give me.
Avatar n tn They found lipoprotein a levels of 270mg/dl, HDL 72, LDLpart 1256, small LDL-Pnmol/L 560, Triglycerides 96, Total cholesterol 221. I have no family members with any obvious heart disease. I had a CIMT Carotid Artery Ultrasound test and found R) Artery normal for my age and the L) Artery at norms for 65 year old. I am currently taking 750mg of Niaspan er, Omega 3 fish oil and Vitamin D3 2000mg daily (it was at 29). What are my risks for atherosclerosis causing MI, stroke etc.
Avatar n tn I assume you have a cholesterol issue. Why not ask your doctor for a prescription for a statin medicine? You can get the drug for $4.00 a month or less, and it's much less invasive than Niaspan, in my opinion. I tried Niaspan years ago, it wasn't effective, and I would get a huge 'blushing' feeling, my face would flush and I would be miserable. Statin drugs are very safe and in my opinion, very effective.
Avatar n tn I have searched the literature and have not found any articles linking Niaspan with any form of cancer. Niaspan is just niacin, one of the B vitamins, and as far as I can tell, is not cancerous in the dose given in Niaspan. As for your other question whether a five year study can demonstrate a drug-cancer connection, it would depend partly on the study design. The strength of the association between cause (the drug) and effect (cancer) would depend on how the evidence is gathered.
159619 tn?1707018272 There has been considerable discussion as of late as to the risk involved in having elevated cholesterol levels and whether or not having elevated cholesterol is still considered a risk for CAD. I am still one who believes in the conventional medical thinking that elevated levels of cholesterol help contribute to CAD.
730053 tn?1234534651 I had been complaining to my cardiologist about these symptoms since the end of November (One month following left artery stent placement). Hospital ran lipid panel showing LDL 68, Triglycerides 400, HDL 28, nuclear treadmill stress test that achieved hr of 150, BP held at 140/75 and revealed an ejection fraction of 67, small thrombosis below right artery, bigeminal and trigeminal PVCs and occasional PACs during recovery, none occurred during the test itself.
Avatar m tn I'm new here and want to find out what people think about the new research on Niaspan. I can't figure out how to filter my search results by date so that I just get recent results.
