Avatar f tn Hi, I had a blood draw in April of 2009 and all of my numbers were perfect accept for my cholesterol was a little high. I was told from friends that Niacin helps as well as fish oil. So, over the past 8 mths I took Niacin and fish oil and my new blood draw cam up with a perfect score in the cholesterol area but my Bilirubin total was elevated at 1.4, Iron UIBC low at 102, Iron serum high at 175 as well as Iron Saturation at 63, and my biggest concern was my TSH high at 5.08.

Avatar m tn They can be found in supplements and also in foods like cold-water fish, walnuts, flax seeds and healthy oils such as olive oil. Fish oil supplements can lower blood pressure, reduce arterial plaque and they also lower triglycerides. Niacin raises HDL, which is known as "good cholesterol". HDL cholesterol removes bad LDL cholesterol and arerial plaque.
Avatar n tn how can i raise the HDL? I have started taking Fish oil(combo fish, borage, flaxseed) and i need to get in teh exercise routine. I dont drink but if drinking 1 glass of red wine will help i will. (Ill hold my nose ;) Am i in danger of an immediate heart attack? This has stressed me out to no end and i can stop looking online about it and everything i read is so upsetting. How much fish oil can I safely take? I can read about Niacin........
523927 tn?1257018704 As for the HDL, take a lot more of those fish oil caps. You can also take flax and hemp oils. Eating fish and spirulina can also help. As for the CoQ10, you might be able to do just as well with 100 and 200 and save some money.
Avatar m tn I have heard of something about Fish Oil capsules but not sure if thet really help you. If any good fish supplement is available, I can take it for my cholesterol levels. Also if I have to see a doctor for my cholesterol levels, what kid of doctor should I see. A normal physicial or a specialist in some field. Would appreciate any help. Thank you.
Avatar m tn Niacin is important for the conversion of carbohydrates, protein and fat into energy! Adults need about 16 milligrams a day. Almonds, Niacin Content: 1 oz, 1 mg Daily Value: 6%. Eat them right before you go the gym. Their high in L-arginine that can actually boost your carb and fat burn during your workout. Navy Beans, Niacin: 1/2 cup, 1.5 mg Daily Value: 9%. They contain resistant starch, a type of fiber that boosts calorie burn by up to 23%.
Avatar m tn I found this interesting podcast from Chris Kresser - RHR: How Your Lipoprotein(a) Level Affects Your Risk of Heart Disease. So from that info find a good quality fish oil. I believe Krill Oil is even better but it's more expensive. There is also niacin (look for non flush niacin) and L-carnitine. And of course look at your diet. You can check out what to eat and avoid on this article from Authority Nutrition: A Paleo Diet Meal Plan and Menu That Can Save Your Life.
Avatar m tn After getting the HDL numbers to 43 (from 28 in 2009) by using plain niacin, fish oil and exercise, a shotgun approach of natural possibilities to raise HDL was adopted in December 2010. Currently use vitamin D, 2 tbs cocoa in my morning coffee and take cayenne and cinnamon supplements at the maximum recommended dose. The April 22 numbers were ldl 43, Tri 32, HDL 64!! This compares with 66, 67, and 43 respectively in December. Still on the niacin and fish oil in high doses...
Avatar f tn Weight loss from diet changes and exercise are the first steps. Supplemental niacin or high-dose fish oil are often effective. Best wishes ...
Avatar f tn Many diabetic clinics provide such testing for free. You might try some alpha-lipoic acid, 1000 mg of omega-3 fish oil, and some slow release niacin. The niacin improves the microcirculation, as does the omega-3 fish oil. If you are paying cash and specify you only want an hba1c and a fasting glucose test it shouldn't be very expensive. To evaluate the thyroid a test known as a TSH is required. This is also inexpensive.
Avatar f tn Thank you for the input! I have since, researched fish oil, but from what I'm seeing, fish oil and krill oil don't serve to raise HDL but only to lower LDL and triglycerides? If you know of a brand that has an effect on HDL, would you mind sharing it please? Thanks.
Avatar n tn i take fish oil , flaxseed and medamusal.
519736 tn?1253986826 Raising HDL (good cholesterol) is best accomplished in my experience by daily exercising for about 30 minutes, a brisk walk qualifies. Also, good quality fish oil (salmon, mackerel, tuna) is considered a good additive for the purpose of raising HDL.
Avatar m tn I am currently taking a multivitamin, 1200mg fish oil, 1000 IU vitamin D3 and 500mg Vitamin B3 (Niacin) every morning. I follow that with a homemade smoothie that I make that consists of apples, oranges, baby spinach, wheat grass, kiwi, banana and a teaspoon of Earth Rise brand Spirulina mixed in. Is this too many vitamins and good stuff to be putting into my body daily?
Avatar f tn I'm with the others -- my cholesterol was way up also and once I got on thyroid med, it came back down to normal, but at last check, it was high again. Like Peggy, I refuse to take med for it. I eat well, and take red yeast rice and fish oil supplement daily. BTW -- I'm also hypothyroid w/Hashimoto's.......You need to get the blood tests that Tamra recommended above to see what your actual thyroid levels are.
714128 tn?1249136386 I don't know for sure, but I think the brand you are taking isn't fish oil, but isn't it krill oil? You might try taking a good fish oil tablet, 2000 grams daily... that's what I take. Your total cholesterol is high, but so is your HDL - the good cholesterol. Have both the LDL and HDL gone up, or just the HDL? If so the MegaRed is doing what it does best, raise the good cholesterol. If I had your cholesterol test, I would mix in a Statin.
Avatar m tn If you want to lower your triglycerides, try taking Carlson Lemon Flavored Fish oil, a tablespoon twice a day, this will help to lower it, and is also good for any inflammation in the veins and arteries. Also, try Niacin, this has been known to help too. Kamy, I do not know what 2.05 would be if converted, I am used to seeing it the other way.
Avatar n tn Your LDL is fine but yes your HDL is considerably low. Aside from fish oil- and eating certain kinds of fish such as salmon will also help raise your HDL. The only other thing I know of is having a glass of red wine everyday but if you've had abnormal liver counts, that might not be the best choice.
Avatar m tn Unrefined oils like mustard oil (kachi ghani Dhara brand)or extra virgin olive oil or even groundnut oil or gingelly oil can be used without heating. 907968 tn?1292622204 So, I choke down the big tablets. I take fish oil tablets derived from mackeral, sardines and other wild fish. Often, fish oil derived from Atlantic and Chilean Salmon as well as BC fish are usually farmed raised and the oil is contaminated by the feed and also the feces of fish in close proximity. I'm curious... what is radio astronomy? Sounds very interesting.
Avatar n tn m agreeing with erijohn, it sounds like a genetic issue. He should try Omega 3 fish oil, I think 2 to 4 grams a day is the recommended dose to raise the HDL (good cholesterol levels) and to lower the Triglicerides, assuming they are high. We all have reasons why we do or do not take certain medications, and I respect that.
