Avatar n tn Told to take Niacin by MD to reduce triglycerides. Took 500 mg tonight before going to bed, along with other meds / herbs. I was told to expect a bit of "flushing" but became pretty concerned when after 45 mins I had an intense burning all over on my skin; face felt puffy and tight; heart seemed to be beating noticeably.
Avatar m tn Niacin is among the most effective agents known for correcting the multiple causes of heart and vascular disease, and has been shown to greatly diminish the risk of heart attack. Niacin is very safe and easy to use, if used properly. In my experience, over 95% of people who follow these guidelines are able to take niacin with only minimal hot flushes. Potentially serious side effects are almost never seen.
Avatar f tn I just received the second blood draw for a possible job in Antarctica. We have to pass a extreme physical in order to go. Oh, and not sure if this would affect the numbers, I got my period the next day after the blood draw. Or is it the Niacin affecting the results?? Thanks for any help on this.
Avatar m tn I know that my husband used to drink this stuff the morning of his drug tests, and he always kept a bottle in his car cause they were also random, and he would always pass. However, I guess it depends..Anyway, can you purchase one of these home tests and randomly give it to him? I don't know. Maybe the hair/lab test, if you really want to know. Also, I know that with Oxy's (my own personal Drug of choice) his pupils will be very small, like pin points. Massive scratching, talkative.
1495437 tn?1288798915 Your body is known to hypersensitive to Niacin. Flushing, hypotension is known adverse effect of niacin in some individuals. The spectrum of these reactions can vary widely; reactions may present as typical allergic symptoms (eg, itching, urticaria, rash, edema) after a single dose, or may manifest as severe idiosyncratic dermatologic reaction. As for marks are concerned, Hydroquinone cream against prescription plus sun protection can lighten existing lesions.
1420486 tn?1384793153 Have to take pre employment drug test. doc hasnt called. Will I be able to pass it . While taking riba and interferion. This is just a drug test. But has anyone passed test while on tx?
Avatar n tn Extended release niacin is arguably just as good as any drug on the market in terms of HDL and LDL effect. It can be tough on the liver but if you have normal liver function then its a legit alternative to statins (my father in law's cholesterol used to clock in at about 270 and he had the same reservations as your husband about drugs - niacin has worked very well for him - his cholesterol is now sub 150 and has been for 10+ years).
Avatar n tn Niacin can also raise blood sugar levels in some cases. Taking the drug during or after the meals can help people to develop a tolerance to flushing and to sometimes decrease it. While you are on niacin, the effect of high blood pressure medicines may also be increased. It is important to set up a blood pressure monitoring system while you are getting used to the niacin regimen, if you are taking high blood pressure medication. But do not take both niacin and atorvastatin.
Tbd Hello and welcome to MedHelp's forums. Thanks for the question. Yes, niacin has been added to certain medications particularly in the statin class. This article explains it nicely https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/high-blood-cholesterol/in-depth/niacin/art-20046208. The thought behind adding niacin was that it would help raise HDL levels even more than the statin drug alone.
Avatar m tn Mechanism of Injury The mechanism of hepatotoxicity is assumed to be an intrinsic toxic reaction related to high serum levels of niacin that overwhelm the high affinity, low concentration nicotinic acid receptors (that are responsible for the flushing response). The finding that niacin can be restarted at lower doses after an episode of clinically apparent injury indicates that the hepatic damage is unlikely to be idiosyncratic or due to hypersensitivity.
Avatar f tn I've been on oxycodone for the past month and want to stop. It's been 54 hrs since I stopped and the withdrawals aren't pleasant and wa wondering if niacin would help clear the drug out of my system so I can stop feeling like hell?
Avatar n tn 3) Response to over-the-counter supplements vary from person to person, so the effect of niacin vs. fish oil on your triglyceride level is unknown. 4) There is some evidence that coenzyme Q10 may help with statin-induced muscle pain, but there is not any well-documented studies to support its use.
Avatar n tn Colestid, LoCholest, Prevalite, Questran, Questran Light) Your body uses cholesterol to make bile, an acid used in the digestive process. These medicines bind to bile, so it cannot be used during the digestive process. Your liver responds by making more bile. The more bile your liver makes, the more cholesterol it uses. So, less cholesterol is left to circulate through your bloodstream.
Avatar f tn t take statins but I do take many antioxidants and other nutritionals. I have to be careful taking Niacin as too much can be toxic to my liver and to your liver also. Good luck!
Avatar f tn How much Niacin were you taking daily? Was your physician aware you were going to take the Niacin to lower your cholesterol? Were you taking any other medications at the same time?
Avatar n tn I don't know if this helps you..but in layman's terms...niacin B3 is needed to create energy for metabolism. Are you having problems with weight gain or loss?
Avatar m tn These findings suggest that higher pretreatment LDL and cholesterol levels may be used to predict response in HCV-infected patients undergoing interferon-based antiviral therapy.
Avatar n tn t used it in quite a while, and used way too much) next morning, i ran to my exercise class. I had diareah, dizzy, tummy ache, and a flushed face. then my face started burning. I must have gotten the nia24 on the very tips of my ears, because they are the worst. I put aloe on half of my face and desitin on half. this morning the desitin half is not burning, but still red. So now I am sitting here with desitin all over my face. I bet someone knows of something better to try.
Avatar m tn One changed the blade on the razor and the other one used it to shave my beard. I got two very tiny cuts on my face and a little bit of blood came out? I suspect that he might have used the wrong razor containing the used blade? So what are the chances of contracting hiv presumed that there might be some blood on it. On wiki answers it is written that around 15% of people infected with hiv are those who get it from saloon.
463841 tn?1207438535 Hello. Well, I had a question.. I've been hearing and reading a lot of posts from people about their experiences with the Niacinamide supplement, and how effective it seems to be with people suffering from anxiety. I just got myself the thing.. but I'm having thoughts on whether to take it or not. I'm currently on Xanax a .5 mg every night. So even if I did consider taking Niacinamide, it wouldn't be advisable to take it while I'm on Xanax at the same time would it?
600301 tn?1219689156 Sorry to hear of your issues, I'm sure the doctors will provide you some very useful advice on how to go forward. Niacin can alsi increase your HDL if diet and exercise is not working, are you on any meds? Is your heart damaged and how is your EF% ? This information will help the forum doctors when providing an answer.
Avatar m tn I have just read the success of a medical investigative team using vitamin B3 (niacin) to treat general anxiety disorder instead of the now widely criticised ansiolotics especially diazepams like Xanax. My doctors have been dismissive of B3 even for redution of cholesterol. I haven't tried them yet on this new finding.
Avatar n tn He said that it was absurd to think that a five year study could demonstrate such a link, that it takes longer for a drug to cause cancer. I have to assume that he also thinks its absurd to think that it would only take five years for a drug to cause a cancer that was 'dormant' to become active (detectable). Do you agree?
Avatar n tn Low HDL seemed to be the significant factor in my coronary artery disease. My total cholesterol was around 230 and HDL was 30 when I had my heart attack at 49. I started with just a statin, but have taken Lipitor + 1000mg Niaspan + Whelcol for over 5 years. My hdl has consistently been in the 50's and I keep my total Cholesterol around 150-160. I had driven the TC down to 130, but thought it unwise for the long haul as I believe that the body has a purpose for ldl cholesterol.
Avatar m tn You could also ask about fibrates of fenofibrates which work in your intestines to help control the absorption of cholesterol. Niacin does not really do much to lower cholesterol. It increases HDL which is used to remove LDL from your system, however recent studies have found that HDL created by niacin use is not as effective as naturally occurring HDL particles. Can you tell me what your lipid profile is? Perhaps I can point you in the right direction with more information.
