Avatar n tn Told to take Niacin by MD to reduce triglycerides. Took 500 mg tonight before going to bed, along with other meds / herbs. I was told to expect a bit of "flushing" but became pretty concerned when after 45 mins I had an intense burning all over on my skin; face felt puffy and tight; heart seemed to be beating noticeably.
Avatar f tn I just received the second blood draw for a possible job in Antarctica. We have to pass a extreme physical in order to go. Oh, and not sure if this would affect the numbers, I got my period the next day after the blood draw. Or is it the Niacin affecting the results?? Thanks for any help on this.
Avatar m tn When you start niacin and whenever you increase the dose, taking an adult (325-mg) uncoated aspirin tablet can block the niacin flush. After a few weeks or months, when flushing dissipates, changing to a low-dose (81-mg) enteric-coated aspirin can minimize stomach upset and the long-term risk of stomach ulcers and bleeding. Always discuss aspirin use with your doctor, and only use aspirin on a long-term basis with your doctor’s recommendation. Avoid alcohol and spicy foods when taking niacin.
Avatar n tn Background: I have engaged a Niacin regimen to cut cholesterol (vs. using statin drugs) because Niacin also raises HDL and cuts LPa and triglycerides (while statins only cut LDL). I have been on this regimen since 2003 and the effect on my cholesterol/triglycerides and LPa has been more than as hoped for. Just as with statin drugs, it is necessary to get regular blood tests (ideally every 6 months) to ensure there is no liver damage.
1420486 tn?1384793153 Have to take pre employment drug test. doc hasnt called. Will I be able to pass it . While taking riba and interferion. This is just a drug test. But has anyone passed test while on tx?
Tbd What is the purpose of the niacin and should a niacin supplement be administered if the medication does not contain niacin?
Avatar m tn If the injury occurred after switching to a SR formulation, the crystalline form of niacin may be restarted at a lower dose and with caution. See: http://livertox.nih.gov/Niacin.
Avatar f tn How much Niacin were you taking daily? Was your physician aware you were going to take the Niacin to lower your cholesterol? Were you taking any other medications at the same time?
Avatar n tn s cholesterol used to clock in at about 270 and he had the same reservations as your husband about drugs - niacin has worked very well for him - his cholesterol is now sub 150 and has been for 10+ years). You could say that extended release niacin is sort of a drug in itself but btw that and a statin I'd personally try the niacin first.
600301 tn?1219689156 Sorry to hear of your issues, I'm sure the doctors will provide you some very useful advice on how to go forward. Niacin can alsi increase your HDL if diet and exercise is not working, are you on any meds? Is your heart damaged and how is your EF% ? This information will help the forum doctors when providing an answer.
1495437 tn?1288798915 Your body is known to hypersensitive to Niacin. Flushing, hypotension is known adverse effect of niacin in some individuals. The spectrum of these reactions can vary widely; reactions may present as typical allergic symptoms (eg, itching, urticaria, rash, edema) after a single dose, or may manifest as severe idiosyncratic dermatologic reaction. As for marks are concerned, Hydroquinone cream against prescription plus sun protection can lighten existing lesions.
Avatar f tn Just seen the Dr today and she said that the Simvastatin is essentially attacking the HLD and keeping the other numbers relatively healthy. So, she prescribed 250mg Niacin 3x per day and a follow-up blood test in a month. So, I guess my original statement was relevant after all. Statins can be harmful - "if you're not checked out often". Avatar n tn He said that it was absurd to think that a five year study could demonstrate such a link, that it takes longer for a drug to cause cancer. I have to assume that he also thinks its absurd to think that it would only take five years for a drug to cause a cancer that was 'dormant' to become active (detectable). Do you agree?
Avatar n tn My MD & I have been trying for about 5 years now to raise my HDL (I have family history w/father dying of heart attack at 48) .Niaspan only raised it nominally, & now he wants to try Crestor.....Are statins good for raising HDL?...If one can keep their LDL down low enough say under 80, is HDL still significant?....Except for HDL, my other numbers are good...I'm non-smoker, & ideal weight, & active.....
Avatar m tn Have you thought of randomly doing a drug test at home. We have a 17 year old and do random test on him. I would start there then look into counseling and have them advise you where to go from there.
Avatar f tn Are you only asking to pass a drug test? Crack is normally out of the bloodstream in 3-4 days, but chronic users it can be much longer. We are not supposed to answer drug test questions here so if this is for you, I hope you are quitting.
Avatar m tn High LDL is also indicative and a precursor to diebetes, not to mention influential in plaque formation and heart disease, etc. the research I thought was interesting was that on PPC and the antifibrotic benefits. It really hasn't changed my lipid profile enough to matter there though. The trouble with all the fats and oils, good bad or indifferent is that the HCV Virion protects itself with the same darn lipids on it's outshell that we need to have in there for life itself.
Avatar f tn Thanks for your prompt reply. I take 50 mg. Trrazodone, for sleep. My only other medication is Maxzide. I am not intentionally taking a lot of niacin. My multi-vitamin lists 20 mg. As far as I know my diat does not include an unusually high amount of niacin. I do eat bran cereal and drink about 4 8-oz. glasses of milk a day.
Avatar n tn Niacin can also raise blood sugar levels in some cases. Taking the drug during or after the meals can help people to develop a tolerance to flushing and to sometimes decrease it. While you are on niacin, the effect of high blood pressure medicines may also be increased. It is important to set up a blood pressure monitoring system while you are getting used to the niacin regimen, if you are taking high blood pressure medication. But do not take both niacin and atorvastatin.
Avatar n tn Why not ask your doctor for a prescription for a statin medicine? You can get the drug for $4.00 a month or less, and it's much less invasive than Niaspan, in my opinion. I tried Niaspan years ago, it wasn't effective, and I would get a huge 'blushing' feeling, my face would flush and I would be miserable. Statin drugs are very safe and in my opinion, very effective.
Avatar n tn I just received the results of the Berkley Heart Profile. My father died of CAD at the age of 46. My mother had a coronary artery blockage that was repaired at age 75. I'm a 54 yr. old healthy female non smoker, low BP, 5'5''/128 lb.and live a healthy lifestyle (exercise and diet). My Lp(a) was 114, very high and a fibrinogen of 475. I also see that the LDL particles are primarily large. I plan on a stress test and obtaining a good cardiologist.
Avatar n tn depends on how many and how long you've been taking it.......lots of water exercise, metabolism are all factors........stays in the system for a few days......a good week and you should be fine......I hope. When is your test and how many and how long? Nauty............
Avatar f tn Dear all, I am a chronic Hepatitis B patient who have drug resistence to Lamivudine and Entecavir, and my Kidney is not good(Creatinine=3.7). Doctor said my only next choice of drug is to use Pegylated Interferon(Pegasys), so my questions are: 1. any other drugs that is suitable for me except Pegylated Interferon? 2. Are side effects of Pegylated Interferon quite serious and hard to handle if I have to use it? Many thanks for your advice and sharing! Mike.
Avatar n tn 5 Vicodin on Wednesday and I have an appointment on this following Wednesday at a pain clinic, will I be able to pass this test or am I screwed, because I really need to have my pain medication for the pain I have and am going through?
2019697 tn?1334150247 your post is important to me. B3 is niacin, yes? No doctor I have seen has a good word for it. 'Waste of noney', said one of them. Cardiologists are te same when I ask if I should take it (I have one stent placed). I got the usual flush when I took it, a nuisance but bearable. But its defenders talk of a very strong dose in order for it to be effective. I have some of 250mgs but am wary of the hot flushes. Can you please saywhat dose of B3 is included in theB-complex you take?
