718651 tn?1237042917 I was thinking today of if taking niacin would make the opiate come out of your system faster... i've heard of people taking higher doses to get drugs out of their system to pass a UA.. has anyone tried this?? or do you think it will work??
Tbd What is the purpose of the niacin and should a niacin supplement be administered if the medication does not contain niacin?
Avatar m tn I'm 52 and have never have had high liver enzymes. Took 500 mg of Slo Niacin for about a month between 12/15/13 and 1/15/14 and ALT went from 36 to 60, AST from 39 to 63, and GGT from about low 30's to 110!! based on blood testing done 1/15/14. Previous normal liver bloodwork from chemistry profile was from physical back in late July of 2013. Only a social drinker (few beers on weekend).
479244 tn?1271563659 This stuff I bought at the drug store has 25 mgs. of niacin. Is is all they had , but I am thinking about returning it. IYO - is it safe for me to take this or should I return and look for plain ol B12 liquid.
Avatar m tn How can you tell if someone is addicted to OXY? My son works every day, but is increasingly moody and short-tempered, and, we have found pills and large sums of money in his room. I think he is dealing right out of our house. A lot of his friends have been arrested and gone through detox. How do you approach someone and where do you get help? He is 19 years old and living at home. He has been seeing a counselor for a year since he was arrested for having marijuana parafinalia in his car.
Avatar m tn I started him on Niacin(B1) yesterday, and he is better. I guess Niacin is depleted during severe alcohol use, and it is important for brain function. He received injections of it in re-hab. he switched over to drinking massive amounts of soda when he got out, and that can deplete it too.
Avatar n tn s cholesterol used to clock in at about 270 and he had the same reservations as your husband about drugs - niacin has worked very well for him - his cholesterol is now sub 150 and has been for 10+ years). You could say that extended release niacin is sort of a drug in itself but btw that and a statin I'd personally try the niacin first.
1063764 tn?1272821064 I was watching a documentary and heard about a case where a woman was put on niacin supplements for depression. She was taking very large dosages, but it completely pulled her out of her depression. So far fluoxetine has helped me, but I think in time I will need a larger dosage. I would really rather not do that, so my question is: is it safe to take niacin supplements of 100 mg daily plus an extra multivitamin with 20mg. I don't want to end up taking too many vitamins.
Avatar f tn Thanks for your prompt reply. I take 50 mg. Trrazodone, for sleep. My only other medication is Maxzide. I am not intentionally taking a lot of niacin. My multi-vitamin lists 20 mg. As far as I know my diat does not include an unusually high amount of niacin. I do eat bran cereal and drink about 4 8-oz. glasses of milk a day.
Avatar n tn Why not ask your doctor for a prescription for a statin medicine? You can get the drug for $4.00 a month or less, and it's much less invasive than Niaspan, in my opinion. I tried Niaspan years ago, it wasn't effective, and I would get a huge 'blushing' feeling, my face would flush and I would be miserable. Statin drugs are very safe and in my opinion, very effective.
Avatar n tn I came to this rehab here in Texas. The place is based on L.R Hubbards study "clear body , clear mind". They have a system detox program that I am in now. First you run for 30 minutes daily to get the niacin in your system . supposed to help break up toxins (starting at 100 mg the first day , to 100 mg more daily till your at a total of 2500 mg in one day.
Avatar m tn Niacin is important for the conversion of carbohydrates, protein and fat into energy! Adults need about 16 milligrams a day. Almonds, Niacin Content: 1 oz, 1 mg Daily Value: 6%. Eat them right before you go the gym. Their high in L-arginine that can actually boost your carb and fat burn during your workout. Navy Beans, Niacin: 1/2 cup, 1.5 mg Daily Value: 9%. They contain resistant starch, a type of fiber that boosts calorie burn by up to 23%.
1135275 tn?1586565652 Niacin is toxic in too high a dose. Niacinamide isn't, and so that's usually used for mental health purposes, but it doesn't yield a lot of niacin. Niacin will also give you a hot flush on your skin, unless you buy a non-flush niacin, which is usually, again, niacinamide. Niacin is usually used for the heart.
Avatar m tn You can consume alcohol and spicy foods apart from your use of niacinfor example, having a glass of wine at 7 p.m. and then taking niacin at 9 p.m. Only a few people will have more flushing due to the combination.
Avatar n tn I am not a doctor, simply a long-time Rx opiate junkie who has had many opportunities to develop a way to detox. This is a recipe for at-home self-detox from opiates based on my experience as well as that of many other addicts. It is not intended as professional medical advice. It is always wise to make sure none of the recipe ingredients or procedures conflict with medications you may be taking.
Avatar n tn com/viewarticle/458867_4 Regarding the issue of niacin lowering the cholesterol levels, Niacin or nicotinic acid lowers low density lipoprotein cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglyceride levels while raising the high density lipoprotein cholesterol levels(good cholesterol). But this medication is not recommended to be taken by your own because you may miss some important side effects. Side effects include flushing, stomach upset, vomitings, headache, dizziness, liver damage in some cases.
Avatar f tn Are you using methadone for pain management or strictly for addiction? I found pain management doctors often have a plan for detox also. The doctor I went to had clinic patients that came to him for help tapering and prescribes subs for the chronic relapse people. You may find a local doctor like that near you. It's worth looking. It was cheaper than a clinic too. It's worth a shot. You are on too high a dose to cold turkey, I've tried it at 150mg myself, not a pretty picture.
Avatar n tn I am 32 years old, and took Niacin, 3 capsules at one time, because a friend said it would cleanse my body of toxins, and is very healthy. I was 18 years old when I took it... I still have hyperpigmentation all over my body, especially my thighs, arms, torso, and back. I'm not talking about a couple little spots, I am talking about thousands. Since they had appeared, I have been unable to wear short sleeve shirts, or shorts, or tank tops, or anything else that would show them body parts.
Avatar f tn I've read conflicting articles saying that niacin is necessary for thyroid function and then some that say it can lower thyroid levels and cause liver damage. I've seen it in some iron supplements and wondered if I needed to stay away from it or if it would be good to take.
463841 tn?1207438535 While niacin is not a drug I encounter often at the hospital, I know that many doctors have us withold this med, especially in patients with cardiovascular issues. Quite a few years ago, while I was browsing the shelves in a health food store, the clerk asked me what I was looking for. I told him I had severe panic disorder and he immediately recommended that I take large doses of niacin, as he said it's good for people with anxiety problems.
877402 tn?1241569071 Buprenorphine (Suboxone or Subutex) are the newest medicines for detox from prescription drug addiction. Both activate opioid receptors, reducing drug craving and preventing withdrawal. Subutex is given during the first few days of treatment, while Suboxone is used during the maintenance phase of treatment. Like methadone, Suboxone can then be gradually weaned and stopped, eliminating physical dependence on opioids. Clonidine is a blood pressure medicine that acts on the brain.
