Niacin and weight loss

Common Questions and Answers about Niacin and weight loss

niaspan

Avatar m tn “No-flush” niacin preparations, such as inositol hexaniacinate and nicotinamide, are widely sold as niacin alternatives that do not cause hot flushes. In my experience, however, they simply do not work. In other words, no flush, no effect. The correct dose of niacin depends on what abnormality you and your doctor are trying to correct. To raise HDL and correct small LDL, a dose of 750-1000 mg a day usually provides full benefit.
Avatar m tn t have enough self control to lose any weight. I had muscle pain and memory loss with statins, flushing and finally facial swelling with niacin supplements. The memory loss was so bad, I sold my veterinary practice and retired BEFORE the lawsuit. I ran for exercise until I wore out my left knee, now I walk. Again, these labs are before any medication.
Avatar m tn Niaspan is NOT standard treatment for fatty liver disease. NIASPAN® (niacin extended-release tablets), contain niacin, a B-complex vitamin and antihyperlipidemic agent. What type of fatty liver disease do you have? NAFLD (nonalcoholic fatty liver disease), NASH (nonalcoholic steatohepatitis). AASLD Treatment Guidelines: Recommendations 16. Weight loss generally reduces hepatic steatosis, achieved either by hypocaloric diet alone or in conjunction with increased physical activity. 17.
Avatar n tn For two years I took Zocor for the purpose of lowering my Cholesterol. When I complained to my doctor about my body aching all over she suggested I discontinue using the Zocor for several weeks. As time passed I realized a lessening of body aches so I decided not to go back on the Zocor. It has now been 5 months since I have taken Zocor. Meanwhile, I have been losing weight (about 5 pounds) without changing my diet. I realized that my pants were baggy in the thighs and seat.
Avatar n tn The slight elevations may be due to weight and stress. Also ask about sleep apnea. Most of the symptoms and medical problems you mentioned boil down to weight -- despite your previous efforts to lose weight. May be time to try behavioral modification (if available) or other more aggressive weight loss methods -- there are no medications that will be safe/effective for this problem.
Avatar f tn That said, your TSH appears high and combined with your symptoms of weight gain, tiredness, memory loss and dry skin I would say you are hypothyroid and need to start on medication for that. You may want to see a specialist (an Endocrinologist) experienced with treating thyroid disorders. Don't delay treating this. The thyroid impacts pretty much your whole body and if it isn't functioning correctly, you are going to have extensive issues that will only get worse.
Avatar n tn d be thinking about all the ways the blockages can be reversed and attack it from all fronts. Medication, niacin, diet, exercise, lose weight if you have to. Smoking is a huge risk factor too, if you smoke, you need to stop now. When it somes to CAD, omega 3 oils are also helpful.
Avatar m tn Having Chromium and Niacin listed as separate ingredients would not be the same as Chromium Picolinate. Separately, (Niacin would be niacin and Chromium would be Chromium plus one of the chelators). It can get very confusing, but with all of that said, per the National Institute of Health "...given the limited data on chromium absorption in humans, it is not clear which forms are best to take.
Avatar m tn Gee, thanks for noticing, "Jack". I actually LOST a bet over in weight-loss and dieting!!! I'm 3lbs OVER for the bet (big day is TODAY). Looks like I'm gonna have to make a clown video and post it on YouTube. Ugh. Unless, I can "forget" to do it, eh? BTW, where were you with the 5 weight-loss supplements that really work when I needed them??? JK!
Avatar n tn using statin drugs) because Niacin also raises HDL and cuts LPa and triglycerides (while statins only cut LDL). I have been on this regimen since 2003 and the effect on my cholesterol/triglycerides and LPa has been more than as hoped for. Just as with statin drugs, it is necessary to get regular blood tests (ideally every 6 months) to ensure there is no liver damage.
Avatar m tn If there is no apparent link, then you should look at things like your weight and your diet and exercise habits, and as Red Star correctly notes, metabolic factors like thyroid function. So far, statin treatment hasn't existed long enough to *prove* that it alone has the value of increasing longevity vs just improving the appearance of blood tests.
Avatar f tn if you can try the slo release formula and make sure you take with food.. I use and research a lot of alternate treatments.. Niacin has the propensity to flare up causing those exacerbated feelings also your scalp may feel like its on fire too.. You should be ok and if it doesn't go away seek medical treatment ..

479244 tn?1271563659 (uh oh) Anyway, I checked and found that someone with liver disease (I have mild inflamation and no fibrosis) should not take over 35 mgs. of niacin per day. This stuff I bought at the drug store has 25 mgs. of niacin. Is is all they had , but I am thinking about returning it. IYO - is it safe for me to take this or should I return and look for plain ol B12 liquid.
475570 tn?1280941363 I just want to add that this was a study of Niaspan - the time release version of Niacin - and not Niacin.
Avatar f tn Did you have a question on adult type 2 diabetes?
1375932 tn?1279301132 I take an array of meds (Coreg, Nitro, Nitro-Quick, Pravastatin, Niacin, Fish Oil and Vit D and small dose Xanax. Lipids are good overall, but HDL could be higher and 1000 Slo-Niacin has not pushed down LP(a). Possibly adding Diltiazem and have recently read about Eplenerone which I understand suppresses cortisol/physiological stress response. I have breakthrough pain almost daily, particularly with emotion - I have always had an exaggerated physical stress response.
179856 tn?1333547362 I don't have a cholesterol issue, but, thanks to warnings I read on this forum, I am determined to keep the tx weight loss off and to continue losing weight before I treat again. I've found an on-line tool that has helped tremendously to help control my food intake. It's my food diary *******. If the foods you're eating are contributing to your problem this may help.

Avatar m tn Call it mind over matter or whatever but I started taking Niacin and inositol last week. I have felt a steady improvement in my mood and anxiety levels each day. I have been taking a B Complex, 100 mg everyday for the past 2 months. The Niacin I take is 400 mg so that is a 500 mg/day dose. Yesterday I bumped up to 400 mg in the AM and 400 at night. There is definely an improvement that I feel. i am not 100% yet but I feel better than I did a week ago.
