Niacin and mental health

Common Questions and Answers about Niacin and mental health

niaspan

Avatar m tn t know what exactly causes them, I believe in the biopsychosocial model to describe most of human behaviour--combo of biological, psychological and social factors... But vitamin and mineral deficiencies definitely contribute to mental problems and there is a lot of evidence suggesting that poor nutrition is a culprit to many mental illnesses. I'm glad you are telling people about Hoffer's research!
Avatar n tn Yes niacin causes mania I took two 500mg tablets and since then felt my mental health deteriorating, it is only going to be temporary but do not take niacin it’s not needed, stay natural and eat healthy
1135275 tn?1586565652 Niacin is toxic in too high a dose. Niacinamide isn't, and so that's usually used for mental health purposes, but it doesn't yield a lot of niacin. Niacin will also give you a hot flush on your skin, unless you buy a non-flush niacin, which is usually, again, niacinamide. Niacin is usually used for the heart.
Avatar n tn and nix the niacin, every vitamin, food and substance applied to the body and breathed in must be run thru your liver....start reading up on what is toxic to the liver..in here and google it...the list is looooonnngg.
479244 tn?1271563659 (uh oh) Anyway, I checked and found that someone with liver disease (I have mild inflamation and no fibrosis) should not take over 35 mgs. of niacin per day. This stuff I bought at the drug store has 25 mgs. of niacin. Is is all they had , but I am thinking about returning it. IYO - is it safe for me to take this or should I return and look for plain ol B12 liquid.
Avatar f tn His early work led to the use of niacin for schizophrenia and as an cholesterol treatment. Dr. Hoffer died in 2009 at the age of 91, but he successfully treated many thousands of patients with high dose niacin for psychotic disorders. He presented some very compelling evidence to support treating most psychotic disorders as a vitamin B3 deficiency.
Avatar n tn I am currently due with my second child in April. I sometimes feel as if my mental health takes over and affects my daughter as well. I have been working with different coping skills and learning the warning signs of how I feel right before I go into a cycle. I can honestly say therapy has helped a lot with this. The day I found out I was pregnant I quit taking all my meds (my choice, did not talk to my psychiatrist about it) and I have been doing awesome!
Avatar m tn It was full of abuse (mental, physical and emotional). As a child and a teenager no one would ever know because I was outgoing, happy (when I was with my friends and not my father), got decent grades and always behaved myself. I never got into trouble in school or elsewhere. I knew how and when to wear the mask. The only person who knew anything about what was going on, besides my mom and siblings, was my best friend.
Avatar m tn also in a group or so with friends sometimes i am not able to interpret what they are saying and left part and back part starts paining as if somebody is compressing my nerves.due to this problem i am not able to perform well in the studies also.my family members think that i am making excuses of not to study but its not like that.how can i explain to it to my family members.i had a homeopathic consultant previously .when i took the medicine coarse for 15 days pain was reduced to a small extent.
1136436 tn?1261826161 You fight depression through therapy with a psychiatrist, and often medication is also needed. We need to learn why we are depressed, how to cope with some of our feelings, forgiving, and letting go. If your depression is due to a chemical imbalance and not an outside factor, you will need medication for the rest of your life. It can be tough, but know you're not alone and that you can live a happy, normal life on medication as millions of us are doing.
Avatar n tn Do not enable his behavior or you will have responsibility for what happens to him. And do not let him into your house even for a visit. If he is so drugged up and has mental problems, your safety is in jeopardy. Really sorry to sound so harsh. But you have a real problem on your hands. You are doing the right things. Hope that you will continue.
5245618 tn?1365687749 I have been feeling more alone lately and more stressed. I also feel picked on alot and made fun of. Any ideas that i can help myself and not tell anyone?
Avatar m tn My husband was hit in the head while at work and they thought nothing of it gave him some stitches and sent him back to work. Three months later we discovered he had developed petite maul seizures and will have them for the rest of his life. Please go get checked. You may be able to control it with medications or therapies. Best of luck to you.
Avatar n tn My mother has very similar symtoms but hers sound worse than yours. She cant quit dwelling on things and then will get angy and border on violence. Your way ahead of the game by admitting that you know its not normal to feel this way. I would look up symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder. It sounds worse than it is. Its basically the inability to control emotions. Always reading into things that aren't really there and then letting your mind run away with you.
804317 tn?1274207759 it cause me to have self-hatred and distrust of people in general. I always have weak emotional and mental stability; I get easily annoyed and irritated, and I also have a lot of anxiety problems.
Avatar n tn ll end up getting caught up thinking about things and it will take me a while to fall asleep and I end up only getting a few hours of sleep, Does this sound like something I should look into and if so what should i do.
Avatar f tn Perhaps this problem has nothing to do with mental health, if it is to do with your central nervous system. Do you feel you both have mental health problems, or is it pain?
Avatar n tn is it safe to take trazodone if i cant sleep and I am on a regular geodon 80mg and depakote 1000mg (devide by am/pm) also with cogentin?
Avatar f tn No with meds and treatment and once doctor gives you a clean bill of health i see no reason one can't issues there dream. See people on a whole just have a wrong perception or should i say place 'stigma' where mental health is involved and to know as i do its just a illness that can be treated just as a disease. But it depends on you if your will to fight this and press forward with your dream if so as becoming a cop. keep strong...
Avatar f tn Has anyones mental health been impacted by living with endometriosis or finding out they have the illness? If so how are you coping/dealing with it?
Avatar f tn A doctor should always be your primary source of information. And a doctor that knows you and oversees your health. So, make sure you run everything by your doctor and come up with a mutually agreed upon plan. Niacin HAS been used to lower triglycerides and raise HDL (good) cholesterol. Improving these two aid in overall improvement in total cholesterol numbers. But niacin can have real draw backs too. You MUST talk to your doctor before starting a niacin supplement in my opinion.
