I think it really depends on the person. I've tried Prilosec, Nexium and Aciphex, all for extensive periods of time. My # 1 all-time fave is Nexium, and Aciphex is also very effective. Prilosec doesn't seem to work as well. Just my experience.

Esomeprazole (Nexium) is slightly different than omeprazole (Prilosec). But your body could react the same way. You could try a small amount and see. There are some combo otc drugs by Rolaids and others that have an antacid and famotidine (acid reducer). Those probably don't work as well.

Can you take nexium one day and Prevacid the next? I am struggling to find something to help stop the burning in my chest and back. I started on Prilosec 4 years ago for GERD. When that didn't cover it, I was switched to Nexium. Then my primary switched me to Protonix 40 mg/daily. That worked for the last year. I tried taking Celebrex for a hip problem and that threw my reflux into overdrive! It's been 6 weeks and I can't get the flare under control.

The active components in Nexium are esomprazole magnesium and in Prilosec are Omeprazole Magnesium. Also, Nexium comes in 20 mg and 40 mg capsules and Prilosec is sold over the counter in 20 mg tablets. My GI switched me to Nexium because Aciphex gave me terrible side effects and Protonix made my water brash symptoms ever worse. I have tried Prilosec in the past and it didn't have much of an effect for me.

Prilosec and Nexium is for heartburn. Prilosec is taken over a 14 day period and can only be taken every 4 months. Not sure about dosing for Nexium but Prilosec is often prescribed because it is over the counter.

I ran out of Nexium and am trying to get by with Prilosec until I see my gastro doc. It's not working very well. Anyone got any tips? I'm taking lots of Tums, but still burning like crazy. I've been on the Nexium for years and would love to get off of it if there is something less physically addictive.

Prilosec and Nexium are very similar. Nexium is Prilosec that has been slightly modified.

He gave me a bunch of Prilosec samples - told me it was better to take Prilosec every day then Nexium. I said, "really?" He recommended i set up an appointment with a Gastro care Doc. So mayble i'll start taking the Prilosec instead of the Nexium, especially if it works just as well. Nexium is suppose to be a cleaner version of Prilosec. I have tried all of the acid blockers and Nexium is my last resort before surgery is necessary. While on Prilosec, I couldn't lift a dumbbell which wasn't good because I worked in a Lady's gym. Nexium...I have been on this for 6 years now and the only side effect I have is diarrhea. My gastroenterologist does not seem to be concerned because the Nexium is working for me. Nexium is not suppose to effect the joints.

About 2 months ago I started taking Prilosec for reflux. I then began to have a huge increase in the number of PVC's. Sometimes lasting all day. I've been on an event monitor for the past 2 weeks. I didn't even think that to relate this increase in PVC's to the Prilosec until about a week ago. I stopped the Prilosec and lo and behold the PVC's are gone or at least back to the minimal occurance that they were before.

Most knowledgeable hepatologists prescribe proton pump inhibitor (PPI) drugs like Nexium or Prilosec. Both are generally considered liver friendly; omeprazole is available generically if cost is an issue.

By taking one of those magical pills each morning, i'm able to eat anything and feel great. But if i forget to take a pill, i'll feel it (usually about 35 hours without taking a pill). I recently met with my primary care doctor, and he said it was dangerous to be taking Nexium long-term, every day. Is this true?

I too had some serious issues when on Prilosec, nexium ,ect... felt worse on it. And wow, was it hard to get off of it, the rebound reflux was terrible. What helped me was a natural medicine/herb called mastic gum. I used it 2 in am /2 pm and slowly cut my nexium down every day. It took some time , but I did get off of it and now feel much better than when I was on it. I take the mastic gum off and on for a few weeks if my indigestion symptoms start up again. Can you please tell me if you can take Nexium 40mg. and Zantac 75mg. together or on the same day. My GI doctor has me on Nexium 40mg. and my PCP wants me to take Zantac 75mg. at night before I go to bed. Is it safe, and can I take it with Xanax 1mg. I have GERDS and Barrett's Esophagus. And they both think it mjght be causing these little pinpoint pimples in my mouth, tongue, and throat.

Nexium is just fine to take on treatment as is the other PPI's. My hepatologist ordered me Nexium during tx and then led me go to Prilosec or prevacid when the became OTC. And sense i'm now SVR there wasn't a problem with them.........

Even though medicines like nexium, prilosec, prevacid, protonix, aciphex, and dexilant are all very similar, sometimes you need to try many of them before you find one that works well for you. The nausea could be caused by the GERD. Are you on a GERD-friendly diet? Have you tried raising the head of your bed?
