Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) bacteria causes more than 90% of duodenal ulcers and up to 80% of gastric ulcers, is a common cause of chronic gastritis (stomach inflammation), and a cause of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Helicobacter pylori bacteria neutralizes and decreases secretion of gastric acid to aid its survival in the stomach. Other causes of insufficient stomach acid include aging, hypothyroidism, atrophic gastritis, pernicious anaemia, gastric bypass surgery.
She was on acid blockers for 25 years (tagament for 20 years, nexium for 5 years and also took gaviscon for 10 years). I took my mother off nexium and gaviscon cold turkey and started digestive enzyme supplements and betaine HCI with pepsin supplements in their place. She never got worse only better. She no longer suffers GERD, LPR and is 95% improved with gastritis. If you don't want to go cold turkey you could try taking digestive enzyme supplements and wean off nexium more slowly.
I am a 37 year old male who has been on Synthroid since 2006 after a total thyroidectomy for thyroid cancer I also suffer from chronic GERD and gastritis and I am on Nexium as well..Both my Doctors (Gastro and Endo) told there is no interaction between Nexium and Synthroid. However, other drugs used in the treatment of symptoms of GERD including antacids (Maalox, Mylanta, Rolaids for example) as well as Carafate (also known as sucralfate) can cause problems with Synthroid.
I also took Prevacid for years and Nexium and every upper endoscopy I had revealed numerous polyps in my stomach. I had a nissen fundoplication done in 2001 and stopped taking the proton pump inhibitors. On my EGD in 2002 they were all gone. He said they could have been related to the medication.
"I am a 46yo (white) female, I have been checking statistics for stomach cancer and I do see as a female and with my race the odds are very low. For the last 2 months I have been getting stomach "pain" more uncomfortable than pain, along with a feeling of "fullness" sometimes with a sense of nausea. No weight loss. I would say I have been getting indigestion and reflux for as long as I can remember.
If the upper endoscopy and upper GI are negative, stomach cancer is unlikely. If there continues to be suspicion, the upper endoscopy can be repeated. The right sided pain can still be caused by the gallbladder. A HIDA scan with CCK stimluation can be done to evaluate the gallbladder ejection fraction. If low, then the gallbladder may be responsible for the symptoms. If the tests continue to be negative, irritable bowel syndrome can be considered.
I also probably should have mentioned that we have a family history of stomach cancer and stomach ulcers, which is also what got me to thinking this. My diet, when I do manage to get it down, is good - no worries there. I do not smoke, and drink alcohol occasionally. My specialist told me about an endoscopy but he said he didn't think I needed one, so instead, told me to wait. Do you really think it's worthwhile going back?
My mother suffered severely from Gastric Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) and Laryngopharyngeal Reflux (LPR) for 5 years, gastritis for 25 years (worsened on nexium) and polyps (unknown time); polyps cut out. My mother now suffers neither GERD or LPR.
There are a lot of people who have tried different meds, you're not alone. Not each med works optimally for each person. You can check out gicare.com to get suggestions on what foods to eat and which to avoid. Diet can play a big part for some people.
I was on Nexium for about a month and did not lose any weight. Sorry I could not be more help, but I dont think it is from the Nexium. Is it not possible it is from stopping the hormone pills? When I stopped taking Elavil years ago I lost all the weight that I had put on when taking it.
I've been taking Nexium for so long due to having a hietal hernia and severe acid reflux.I wanted to get off of it for a couple of reasons and one was cost and another was I wanted to try some naturopathic methods.Well, today was the last straw physically for me.I have felt like I've had the stomach flu since I stopped taking the Nexium. It took me about 2 days to start feeling the symptoms and when I've tried stopping the Nexium before I'd just give up right away and start taking it again.
I must go thru a step program, starting with Nexium, which my Doctor dosed at 40 mg instead of 20 mg, saying Nexium didn't come in 20 and the 40mg of Nexium is comparable to the 20 mg Aciphex . Questions: (1) Is the above true? (2) Are the side effects the same, and (3) What's the difference between the two. Thanks for your time.
I feel like it is making me more nasueas and queasy than Prevacid. I was taking 40 mg of Nexium daily and have just switched to 30 mg daily of Prevacid.
I take nexium for acid and generic librax for stomach gurgling. I can't stop fixating on my pancreas but my drs. don't seem concerned about my fears and tell me probably ibs even though I normally go once a day and rarely have diarrhea or constipation. What I really want to know does this sound like pancreatic cancer? if not fat what else could this hazy substance be?.... mucus? What tests are left?
upper endoscopy with biopsies only showed mild gastritis and gerd. I take nexium for acid and generic librax for stomach gurgling. I can't stop fixating on my pancreas but my drs. don't seem concerned about my fears and tell me probably ibs even though I normally go once a day and rarely have diarrhea or constipation. What I really want to know is can I stop worrying about pancreatic cancer? if not fat what else could this hazy substance be? What tests are left?
hello. about 3 weeks ago i had stomach cramps for one day. they went away and were replaced with nausea. it does not get better or worse with eating. no vomiting. stools are pretty normal. at the beginning i did have some diarreah but it went away. the nausea is between my belly button and bottom of ribs. i do have some discomfort when the doc pressed on my upper abdomen below the rib cage. no pain just discomfort.
I was taking 40 mg Nexium daily until a week ago. I don't even respond to laxatives. I have been having anxiety and panic attacks for two months and never lost my appetite. Has anyone else had anything like this??
I have never heard that nexium causes cancer...I do know that acid-reflux can cause cancer. If you are still having reflux following fundoplication surgery, nexium seems to provide alot of protection...Do you still follow the GERD diet and other lifestyle changes since surgery?
You can do some research online about Nexium and immune suppression and see what turns up. Google is a great search engine. I haven't found anything that indicates immune system suppression but there are a considerable number of side effects to careful about. Those side effects can lead to a decline in overall health. I took Nexium for 10 weeks and I couldn't tolerate it at 40mg. It really messes my system up. Although I may try to use the 20 mg. My vision is definitely affected by Nexium.
Do you take any medications ? I had stomach and gas problems on celexa, zoloft, nexium , acifex and problems when taking alot of fish oil ? ConcernedLady do you know if its ok to combine licorice with protonix and pepsid ? I have read that licorice is an antidepressant also .
My grandmother died of stomach cancer last year and I was diagnosed with gastritis and esophagitis this year. I should take pepcid (according to my doctor) but even when I did take it I didn't notice much relief. Is there a more natural solution for us? Any suggestions?
I would say your cancer risk is very low due to your age and no family history of Stomach or Colon cancer, but i'm not a doctor. You really need to see the GI doctor to find out what's going on.
But he thought that it was just anxiety related and put me on lexapro and nexium. meanwhile i started looking up colitis online and found all these scary web sites,,about having to get a colonoscopy...to check for colitis., then i noticed that when i wiped myself my stool seemed a little mucousy, but it was very soft..now i am obsessing every time i go to the bathroom. I wish i knew exactly what mucousy stool looked like. sinse this is a sign of colitis..
I was prescribed a low fat diet. After 2 weeks of being on Nexium I had lost 10 lbs. But I had terrible stomach cramps, bloating and flatulence. After 6 weeks, I decided to go off the Nexium early and I was fine for a couple of weeks but then I started getting severe indigestion with gnawing stomach pains above the navel and the feeling crapping but nothing happens. These symptoms occur at night. I feel constipated at night but have regular BM in the morning.
Very unlikely that this can cause stomach cancer, unless stomach cancer runs in your family. You can get vomitting from eating too much. Your stomach is much smaller now and cannot tolerate too much food. Have you tried any of the Prototn pump Inhibitors like Nexium, prevacid, protonix or aciphex? If not, it is worth a try. Also, Reglan (Metoclopromide) is worth a try. It accelerates emptying of the stomach which can help. Please discuss these options with your Gastroenterologist.
pylori, upper gi which came back normal and no lifestyle changes applied in that we don't drink or use many of the harmaful causes of stomach distress, With cancer in the family and loosing family members last year, They suggested elavil, prilosec, I took Nexium and it did not help. Read alot of helpful info here at this board and purchased books as well.
Biopsy showed no cancer cells and no signs of infection. Prilosec did nothing for him, he has just started Nexium. He also takes Axid at night before bed. He feels burning in his stomach, and a lot of gas and pressure. He can't eat acidic foods and milk is very soothing to his stomach. He feels like he is going to vomit, but feels better after he eats. What could this be from and is he on the right medication.
I get nauseous very easily and I suffer from heartburn from time to time as well. I have had upper and lower GI's done with no concerns showing up on those and yet my stomach problems persist. I worry about stomach cancer of course but I am not sure what else to do about my stomach. Any time I have a problem I get very anxious about it. Suggestions?
This initally had good results, but I have evolved into mild constipation and the stomach distress and gas seems to be escalating again. I am taking 300mcg Synthroid, 5mcg Cytomel, daily, vitamins, one HCL and a Digestive enzyme with each meal. I feel pretty good with current thyroid regime, though I do need 10hr of sleep to feel normal, it takes awhile to get going am, and still feel moody. I eat well, lots of veges , cooked and raw, fruit, low meat intake, lots of water.
