Nexium and low iron

Common Questions and Answers about Nexium and low iron

nexium

Avatar f tn I have had gerd plus a hiatal hernia for years. I take nexium and have for at least ten years. Now I am told I have iron defiency anemia. Reading through the insert that comes with nexium it appears this drug could cause the anemia. Has anybody experienced this?
Avatar f tn She was on acid blockers for 25 years (tagament for 20 years, nexium for 5 years and also took gaviscon for 10 years). I took my mother off nexium and gaviscon cold turkey and started digestive enzyme supplements and betaine HCI with pepsin supplements in their place. She never got worse only better. She no longer suffers GERD, LPR and is 95% improved with gastritis. If you don't want to go cold turkey you could try taking digestive enzyme supplements and wean off nexium more slowly.
Avatar m tn when could I stop Nexium he said I would need to lose weight. I have low iron, low B levels. Thinning hair etc. I already have spinal stenosis. I have been on Nexium for at least 10 years. Anyone out there who's been able to quit Nexium, let me know how and how long it took.
Avatar n tn It seems like previously Nexium seem to help a little. I did have slighly low iron level. One gastro specialist think IBS, but I am not constipated. Though I did notice bloating and less bowel moveements than before. Any suggestions or other tests that you recommend?
Avatar n tn t remember what it was but it didnt seem to help, so he prescribed diclofenac and it caused me to retain water so he prescribed Celebrex, which I felt was working, but when I went for my regular check up he had blood work done and low iron were the results. So now he is requesting the upper GI evaluation. I am currently just taking extra-strength Tylenol. I took Tylenol arthritis, but it didn't seem to help any more than just regular extra-strength Tylenol.
757597 tn?1315801812 The profound hypochlorhydria induced by proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) may impair the gastrointestinal absorption of nonheme iron, a process that is dependent on an acidic environment. The interaction was suspected in two patients with iron deficiency anemia due to gastrointestinal blood loss that were unresponsive to oral iron replacement therapy, even after the bleeding had apparently stopped. Both patients had been on omeprazole for six months while being treated with ferrous sulfate.
Avatar f tn I have been diagnosed with GERD and Gastritis and have been taking Nexium and Zantac regularly. I have had an endoscopy in the last 2 years or so and only thing that was noted was some inflammation. I recently (3 weeks ago) started a new diet plan called Transitions that is based on the low glycemic index and high protein. The basis is to eat protein with every meal so your blood sugar stabilizes throughout the day and you no longer crave sweets etc.
Avatar m tn Blood tests were normal other than one time I had a high blood count, but it went back to normal when it was rechecked. I have had low vitamin B12 and D for the last 2 years. I have also recently had low folate and iron. I went back to the doctor in February, they changed my medication and said it was a gastritis flare up, well I have had gastritis for a while and never had these additional symptoms, just the same ones I had for GERD. The new medicine is not helping any and I am miserable.
Avatar m tn Low stomach acid reduces absorption of nutrients such as iron, B12, folate, calcium and zinc; affects digestion of protein, carbohydrates and fat; and increases the risk of bacterial overgrowth and fungal infections. I posted a lot of info on another thread about reflux and treatment options: http://www.medhelp.
Avatar f tn I am a 55 year old woman and I was diagnosed with GERD in 2002 and have been on Nexium all this time. I am concerned about the long term use of taking Nexium for this length of time and have recently went off of it and am trying more natural/holistic things. The heartburn is back along with sour burps and I get some relief from aloe vera but I noticed that I get really hungry a lot sooner than before but I get full quickly.
Avatar f tn Daughter is 14 years old and was given high iron tablets some time ago as very low hb. Was put down to very heavy periods and was given meds to reduce bleeding which worked really well. Whilst on iron had bad stomach ache and sometimes pain to the right side of the stomach - more often than not associated with eating. Was given meds to reduce acid in stomach and told to stop iron tabs as doc thought may have affected stomach. Daughter then started to lose weight dramatically - approx 1.
1504850 tn?1290289880 So because you have low ferritin you have low iron.. Because your iron levels are low, your oxygen level is low, therefore (1) the heart tries to compensate by increasing the heart rate and pump more blood and (2) the shortness of breath tells you that the body needs more oxygen and you try to take more deep breaths to compensate.. So to make a long story short: i think low iron caused the tachycardia and the shortness of breath.. Hope you're well and take care..
20110020 tn?1490347477 Most doctors will not test your ferritin level unless you ask. Ferritin is iron stores in your body. You can have normal iron levels and low ferritin. I am taking a liquid iron supplement to help with this issue.
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with asthma and the same symptoms, exhaustion, shortness of breath. This PCP put me on Nexium and iron pills, could I have gotten B12 anemia or iron poisoning from this? Now my Ferritin is a little high but my iron and B12 levels are all at the lower end of the range. I've been treating this with B12 at 1000mcg/day but I still feel about the same- my other blood levels are also low....
711171 tn?1245941848 Every test radiologically and blood wise has come back normal other than my hemoglobin and hematocrit being extremely low, requiring me to get iron infusion because I could not tolerate oral iron. Occassionaly my platelet count will come back high or occassionaly my white blood cell count will come back high. Amylase and lipase always come back normal even during extreme bouts of pain. Gallbladder was removed in 2000, no stones, decreased ejection fraction of 10%.
1927233 tn?1326670387 t understand how RBC can be low, MCV normal, and MCH high. Or how my iron is way above normal in July, then borderline low in August. What kind of anemia can do this?
1373488 tn?1325148631 6 gm/dl and my ferritin and iron levels are both low, my Vit b12 is normal and RA normal too. I do also had peptic ulcer and am on nexium 20 mgs daily and I discussed with my Doctor re the possibility that nexium is interfering with the iron supplements. I do take my treatment in different times, so they won`t interfere with one another.
Avatar f tn m taking iron everyday (last 8 months), there is no problem if your ferritin is to low and your iron in serum is not very high. About iron in vegetables, this iron is well absorbed if you take vitamin C.
Avatar m tn But because I know many people with thyroid issues have low iron, maybe for us it is not necessary to check all of the *other* reasons you might have low iron? (And just assume the iron issue is caused by the thyroid issue and not the other way around?) Thoughts?
Avatar m tn i wouldn't worry about the zantac making you extra drowsy with the xanax. it is such a low dose of xanax it shouldn't hurt too much. i have heard of people taking zantac and nexium in the same day though. when i was wondering about what i could take with the nexium my pharmacist told me that i could take imodium ad with it.
10678677 tn?1413254266 doctor told me i was i was anemic...she said my iron was really low and that i needed iron pills or id have to get blood after labor:( who else had this problem??
Avatar f tn If your iron becomes too low it can be fatal
4250330 tn?1388621179 I'm anemic and had no idea.
Avatar f tn My Iron levels were at a 9.3 and they want me taking iron supplements but I don't tolerate iron in pill form so I have just had to up my intake of it in foods , like lots of leafy green veggies and what not.... I have read that eating apples helps your to absorb iron from other foods better and so do oranges so I have been doing that and my levels keep going up I am at a 9.
Avatar f tn I'm 25+ weeks and my iron is low the doc prescribed me prescription iron pills but they make me sick. Does anyone else have this problem? How dangerous is it for me to do nothing??
