Nexium and calcium absorption

Common Questions and Answers about Nexium and calcium absorption

nexium

Avatar n tn Nexium itself does not cause bone loss, but it may decrease the absorption of drugs and vitamins. Nexium may decrease the absorption of calcium and vitamin D leading to bone loss.
Avatar m tn You can switch this around but avoid taking vitamins with synthroid (calcium and iron can interfer with thyroxine absorption) and metformin (can inhibit the absorption of vitamin B12).
Avatar f tn I did find a small group with similar symptoms but my Doc said it was not the Nexium. I stopped it and within 4 days, the flank and thigh pain were gone. I was later put on Omeprazole, 40 mg 2x a day fir the past few months. Not sure yet, but my low back muscles are killing me. I do have Osteo and my Endo doc told me to take B-12, Vitamin E and Calcium as I won't take Fisomax or Actonel. You may consider this.
Avatar m tn My main worry was that I wanted to try it again but was afraid that with all the supplements and then the nexium and levo that it might not be a good thing?
335728 tn?1331414412 To add, vitamin D is essential for the absorption and utilisation of calcium. All the major minerals (calcium, potassium, sodium) are also dependent on magnesium being present in order to function. Statins are a listed cause of vitamin D deficiency as cholesterol is the precusor to vitamin D production.
547836 tn?1302832832 But i just noticed that the main active ingredient is Simethicone 80mg used for antigas along with calcium carbonate, dextrose, flavors, maltodextrin, and starch. so i did what i always do and searched for Simethicone in our handy dandy search bar for the community and found some articles stating that Simethicone may decrease Riba absorption by 14%. is this going to be a kr@p situation or what? but those articles were mainly referencing to antacids, and Gas-X isn't an antiacid.
Avatar m tn I infrequently have stomach pain, pop a nexium, and its like a magic bullet. Not only cures the pain, but I have the best dreams and generally well being feeling. I was thinking that the stress of life leads to acid production and that the nexium fixes (tricks) the brain into thinking more positive thoughts or whatever, thereby stopping the cycle of stress and acid production. Anyway, it really works well for me.
Avatar m tn I'd suggest adding calcium and vitamin D to your diet. I'd also suggest a bone scan and blood tests to determine if you are, in fact, losing bone density. I have Barrett's E. also, and I wasn't aware the condition could be healed, but it could be arrested. I'm under the impression that the cell change is permanent.
Avatar n tn If you have had a vagotomy, taking Nexium is not advised, A vagotomy reduces acid production and the Nexium also reduces acid production. My advice, having gone through the same surgery ,is to stop taking the Nexium, which by the way is not recommended for use more than 14 days. Take a fiber supplement mixed with water and a teaspoon of cider vinegar before every meal . If you should have occasional acid stomach symptoms, take regular Tums.
Avatar m tn I was wondering if calcium supplement can hinder the absorption of hrt..also when is the best time to take hrt..

Avatar n tn I took Nexium for 5 years, 2xs per day and was never told by my first Gastroenterologist that it would prevent the absorption of Calcium. Now I have Osteoporosis and my bones actually hurt. I can also injure myself easily and will end up on some powerful bone medication.
Avatar f tn She was on acid blockers for 25 years (tagament for 20 years, nexium for 5 years and also took gaviscon for 10 years). I took my mother off nexium and gaviscon cold turkey and started digestive enzyme supplements and betaine HCI with pepsin supplements in their place. She never got worse only better. She no longer suffers GERD, LPR and is 95% improved with gastritis. If you don't want to go cold turkey you could try taking digestive enzyme supplements and wean off nexium more slowly.
Avatar n tn I think the confusion about all of the PPIs, including nexium, is that most docs prescribe PPIs without a lot of testing and without that testing it's possible that if someone feels better taking the nexium and stays on it longterm without any testing being done, it could end up masking a more serious problem - like stomach cancer.
Avatar f tn Hello. I've been having acid reflux symptoms for the past 5 months. This includes indigestion, burping, dry/tightness in my throat triggering my gag reflex, and dry cough. My doctor advised me to take Nexium 40 mg for 4 weeks. So far I've been taking it for almost 2 weeks and see some improvements with my digestion, but not so much with my throat symptoms. I have switched to a very healthy diet, and following all the lifestyle changes for GERD.
679466 tn?1247006054 Prilosec and Nexium Heartburn can be uncomfortable, but heart attacks can be fatal, which is why the FDA has investigated a suspected link between cardiac trouble and the acid-reflux remedies Prilosec and Nexium. In December 2007, the agency concluded that there was no "likely" connection. Translation: The scientific jury is still out. In the meantime, there are other reasons to be concerned.
Avatar n tn My doctor and specialty pharmacist said for me to use something like Tums or the equivalent because it is calcium carbonate which will not interfere with the drugs or drug absorption. I use generic calcium carbonate tablets. They look like Tums, but are cheaper. They work.
Avatar f tn ve been on it ever since, until now.. Nexium eats your calcium, my bones have started to feel like they ache so I started drinking almond milk and drink protein shakes to get the probiotics I need to help the acid and help me eat. My body aches, bones do, and I'm worried that I could developed a type of bone cancer. I didn't ask my mom because she thinks my anxiety screws me in the head makes me worry about 'stupid' stuff.. I just need to know.. Thank you.
Avatar n tn Generally speaking tablets take up to 20 to 30 minutes to digest and then go through the absorption process, liquids tend to take 10 minutes or so. The whole process of absorption is much better.
Avatar n tn If so, this will hamper the calcium absorption a bit...Once again, if it is calcium citrate, it will absorb better because it is already "acidified"...The initial "anxiety" sensation goes away fairly quickly as your calcium levels start to settle...If you have chest pains or irregular heartbeats, be sure to get checked out immediately -sometimes the calcium level can go TOO low and can cause problems...Hang in there, it gets better!
Avatar m tn I've heard it blocks absorption of nutrients. Would it also block absorption of radioctive isotopes? Any hunch?
Avatar m tn We did see the ENT and he looked and said it was irritated so we started him on zantac. He has been refusing milk and cheese. He loves Broccoli. I wondered about thyroid but the nurse practitioner said it was good. Could a milk allergy or absorption problem cause these symptoms? He talked later than normal and had speech therapy for a year. His speech is good now but misses still a couple of letters. thriving in school just seems to be tired and pale a lot of the time.
Avatar n tn In addition, a recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that chronic use of acid-blocking drugs leads to an increase in the development of osteoporosis and increase in hip fracture because blocking acid prevents the absorption of calcium and other minerals necessary for bone health.(v) All this is only part of the problem. There have even been some reports that these drugs may increase the risk of certain cancers.
Avatar f tn * Absorption of at least 8 nutrients are dependant on adequate stomach acid: calcium, B9 and B12, magnesium, zinc, iron, vitamin C and beta carotene * Absorption of anti oxidant vitamins A and E, putting you at greater risk of oxidative stress and chronic inflammation * Breakdown of protein for use in tissues and muscle synthesis * Activation of enzymes, hormones, and neurotransmitters * Prevention of bacterial pathogens from going into the lower GI tract, causing infection, and putting yo
Avatar n tn Almond milk is yummy and has more calcium than milk
Avatar n tn I found Magnesium helped with the aches and pains and with the Vitimin D , I took a combined Calcium/Vitamin D tablet. As they say that Vitamin D helps the Calcium to absorb. This was all ok'd by my Doctor as I have the vitamin deficiencies checked prior to taking anything. I was also told not to take any vitamins until at least 4 hours after the thyroxin.
