It is usually advised to monitor the response to a combination of Xanax and Neurontin. In the elderly, it is advisable to keep the doses adequate enough to have the desired clinical effect. The concern is about a possible clouding of consciousness. Potentially harmful activities such as driving may be avoided, since they require sustained alertness.
Ideally, you shouldn't attempt to taper directly off of the Xanax; particularly given the fact that you've been on it for "years". Given the short half-life of 6-11 hours, Xanax does not accumulate in the plasma. It does it's thing within four-to-six hours, and then the blood plasma level troughs to a sub-therapeutic level. This leaves you screaming for more Xanax. If there isn't anything to subtract from gradually, the withdrawal would be hell.
I am interested in taking Amitriptyline the lowest dose which i belive is 10. My neurologist also gave me a script for xanax also the lowest dose. I would like to know if all 3 of these drugs are safe to take together. i am very sensative to meds and I always take the lowest dose possible to start or will sometimes cut my dose in half.
Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Please be careful with using Neurontin... my husband who is addicted to opiates has become addicted to the Neurontin as well. It may sound silly, and I don't have a ton of knowledge on drugs and such, but you can find and read countless forums with people talking about how they abuse the drug, and the horrible withdrawals they go through when running out of it.
I have tried multiple meds such as antidepressants and Gabapentin... always have had multiple side effects. Things like heart palpitation's, anziety and vision troubles. I can take xanax and Soma with no problems. My question is "could it be the Armour Thyroid that I take that causes the trouble?"
I also have a movement disorder labeled as tremors/non-epileptic seizures which also gets worse with antidepressants.
Hello all, my doc put me on Neurontin for my GAD, however, in the meantime I have been having horrible panic attacks, several a day and often in the middle of the night which is causing extreme sleep deprivation. I usually take 0.25mg of Xanax when I'm having a panic attack. She took me off the Xanax and put me on Klonopin 0.5mg twice a day. I'm going to take it tonight but my question is: does anyone take Klonopin for actual panic attacks and does it seem to kick in right away?
neurontin...i used to actually be on that A while back....it can be a good medication...but some people have a slight or more moderate allergic reaction.....thats why i was taken off of it...
instead of being pain free, i was developing muscle aches and skin heat due to an allergy-based rash from the medication...
dont be scared though....talk to your doctor about the mix of the meds....and ask if what you are feeling is possible an adverse effect of the neurontin...
No, not Neurontin or Lyrica. He mentioned Clonazepam because it's longer acting then Xanax but I'm scared....don't need any cognitive impairment. I'm very apprehensive toward taking prescriptions and such but might try the Trazadone this week. Yes, I am depressed/anxious and can't sleep. Feel like a walking zombie nowadays. Had to cut out caffeine and stimulants cause of panic attacks.

I consulted the PDR (Physicians' Desk Reference), which is THE medication bible that physicians refer to with regard to medications. The PDR lists Zanaflex Interactions as: "May potentiate CNS depression with alcohol, baclofen, benzodiazepines, other CNS depressants."
Because you are taking Xanax, which is a benzodiazepine (a CNS depressant), I would strongly recommend that you consult your physician for the answer to your question.
Doubling just the first couple of times caused swelling in my mouth and around my eyes, so I dropped lyrica altogether. In no time I was hit with xanax type withdrawal symptoms: depersonalization, lack of concentration and dizziness being the most frightening. So, I asked to be switched to neurontin and he wrote out 300 mgs. three times daily for me.
I TAKE 14 MG OF XANAX DAILY DOWN FROM 20 MG A MONTH AGO I TAKE 60 MG PROZAC DAILY AND 600 MG OF NEURONTIN AND MOST DAYS I TAKE ANYWHERE FROM 2000 MG TO 3000 MG OF VICODEN I AM TRYING TO TAPER OFF XANAX AND STOP COMPLETELY THE VICODEN. s, all the anti manics including lamictal, old antipyschotics and the new antipsychotics, which thanks to them I am now prediabetic. I am now on Lexapro,xanax and tegretol. The tegretol is recent but I am having trouble with restless legs with it. I might mention that I have also had 21 sessions of ECT. Is there anything left for me?? I am feeling pretty hopeless at this point.
I've been on neurontin since I came of xanax 4 months ago, and I love it. It not only helped me through withdrawal from the xanax (I withdrew in rehab) but it helped with my panic attacks too. The other responses are right about the dose increases though, and lately it has been doing very little for my anxiety, I think it's time for another increase. I don't know much abou depakote though, I was on it briefly as a teen and that's it.
May help if your not taking the Xanax everyday to use it to help you get off the neurontin if you so incline to get off of it. Just use like .25-.5mg to cut the little edge off and then try that meditation. Remember that Xanax is addictive and i'll admit i think i was nearly addicted to it at one point. So you just got to be careful.
I have been dealing with episodes of rapid heart rate (from 150+) that after being tested from cardiologist was diagnosed as panic disorder. My shrink had me on most recently Neurontin and Xanax and Inderal to help slow my heart rate down which makes me panic even more. The Neurontin and Xanax weren't very effective and we just switched over to Klonopin since I need to take this every day and it's safer than xanax daily (supposedly). I also went back to Prozac.
