Neurontin for diabetic neuropathy

Common Questions and Answers about Neurontin for diabetic neuropathy

neurontin

Avatar f tn Lyrica was just approved for this use in diabetic neuropathy, but it is used in other forms, too. There are other meds used, but I am not an expert in them. Good luck to you relieving your misery!
Avatar f tn I am 2 chemos away from finishing my round of six and have developed peripheral neuropathy in my hands and feet. I am on 300mg Neurontin 3 x a day and it still seems to be getting worse. The pain keeps me from walking long distances and I cannot hang my hands down; I have to keep my elbows bent. I have also tried acupuncture. I use warmth to alleviate the pain but it is only a temporary relief. Any ideas or experiences?
Avatar f tn Has anyone had an experience with neurontin? It was prescribed for burning hands and feet and I feel very wierd and crazy..and dizzy.
Avatar f tn m looking for something other than Vicodin, Percocet and Neurontin (3600 mg/day) to use for pain. The Vicodin works a little bit, as does the Percocet. The Neurontin also works a little bit and again, am looking for one pain RX that would work for all instead of taking more than one. Have a friend on the Fentanyl patch and she swears by it. Says it is much better at pain relief than the Percocet or Vicodin and she's not on Neurontin. Please help.
Avatar n tn I suffer from small fiber neuropathy as well. I used to take Neurontin but after being on it for several years it was no longer effective. I now take Lyrica (100mg in the AM and 300mg in the PM). You might find this to work better than Neurontin. The one thing I like about it is that it doesn't make me as tired.
Avatar m tn Hi and so sorry you have such pain. This doesn't seem typical for a diabetic. Perhaps you should see a neurologist? Have you tried meds for nerve pain? There are quite a few out there? I would get it checked out and if it is "normal" they can still give you something for the nerve pain. There is Neurontin, Lyrica and others that are helpful for nerve pain.
280418 tn?1306325910 Should I go to Johns Hopkins and get a skin biopsy to check for small fiber neuropathy? Mine is idiopathic -not diabetic, not toxicity from vitamins or other toxins. Every test has come up normal - MRIs, Lumbar punctures, bloodwork etc.
Avatar m tn I have diabetic neuropath. I have taken Lyrica for the nerve pain, and for me it was miraculous. I could walk again, swimm, didn't hurt. II have had to quit taking it because of the cost, but neurontin is going to be my next try. There are several meds out there.
Avatar f tn Has anyone tried laser treatment for non diabetic neuropathy, some Chiropractors in Phoenix claim they can cure it.
Avatar f tn Ditto Sally, I saw Neurontin mentioned and immediately thought diabetic neuopathy. One goal of treatment is to manage the condition causing his neuropathy. If the underlying cause is corrected, the neuropathy often improves on its own. Secondary treatment is to relieve the painful symptoms. Keeping neuopathy from getting worse must be your/his goal.
Avatar f tn In a diabetic with thyroid disease, numbness in the hands would raise concern for another type of neuropathy: carpal tunnel syndrome. The median nerve can be injured anywhere along its course. If your symptoms are confined to just your hand, it may be the nerve was injured somewhere at the wrist. The carpal tunnel is the area in the wrist that the median nerve passes through.
1490607 tn?1288379690 To answer your questions, yes my doctor is a Neurologist and I was surprise that she ordered the MRI so quickly (only had to wait a couple months). I have been seeing her for non-diabetic idiopathic peripheral neuropathy (severe burning, stabbing and cramping) in both feet and legs. Now I have had these new symptoms. My recent blood tests came back negative (as usual).
662972 tn?1270166301 Also used off label for diabetic neuropathy and body pain.......An MD that I respect a great deal kind of summed it up for me......he said that nuerontin was a nifty little medication looking for an affliction to cure!! Maybe ask Dad why he is taking it. I take it for chronic pain myself and frequently ask myself why I am taking it........
Avatar n tn I think your daughter will have a much better time if she does lower her blood sugars and get to a weight that is healthy for her body-type. When your blood sugars are consistently too high a type 1 diabetic loses weight, this is often how type 1's are diagnosed because they eat and drink more then normal and keep losing weight. If she gets her blood sugars under control I think she will keep the weight on.
757137 tn?1347196453 Further to "Peripheral Neuropathy," is benfotiamine helpful? I found it on the net, but know nothing about it.
Avatar n tn s not his back (it looks good) and he has good circulation ( he had heart bypass surgery 5 months ago). They think it might be diabetic neuropathy (type 2 Diabetic) but it came on extremely suddenly without any other symptoms like foot numbness and tingling. Does this seem possible?
Avatar f tn Thank you so much for your response to my questions about my neuropathy. It was very helpful. Since I posted, my doctor has started me on Neurontin and I am hopeful that it will help. I am trying to be patient. I will keep your tips in mind-being especially careful when using sharp objects! Thank you again.
Avatar n tn I found that Neurontin increased the number of migraines I had and the severity of them, and while I was on Neurontin I had migraines preceded by visual field disturbances--patterns of flickering lights all over the filed of vision of my right eye--that I had never had before the Neurontin and have not had since. My overall experience of Neurontin was not good--it screwed up my calcium/magnesium levels and threw my thyroid and adrenal systems way out of whack.
630344 tn?1280104983 Yes, I'm learning that if you're going for symptom management, hitting both nerve and muscle pain is key. Otherwise it's like kool aid with no sugar! I'm not sure there is a great test to determine neuropathy, I think it can be a matter of ruling out normal causes for pain so nerve pain is what's left. There are many causes and classes of neuropathy, including small fiber neuropathy that doesn't show up on standard tests.
Avatar f tn If it doesnt get better within a few days I will definately see anouther doctor, there is no way to live with this pain. I am diabetic so I knew about neuropathy but never knew you couls get it in the face. Hope things go well for you.
Avatar n tn Currently, the 2 most effective medications for peripheral neuropathy that we have available are gabapentin (Neurontin) and pregabalin (Lyrica). The latter is a newer drug and is more expensive than the first. I generally tend to start with gabapentin and will switch to pregabalin if the gabapentin isn't doing the trick. The mediactions may not take away all of your symptoms, although ideally, they will dampen them considerably.
Avatar m tn I am a medicinally induced diabetic, meaning my diabetes was and is being caused by side effects of a medicine I take for the rest of my life to prevent my immune system from rejecting my transplanted liver [hepatoma carcinoma].
