Neurontin birth defects

Common Questions and Answers about Neurontin birth defects

neurontin

I am scared to death over this pregnancy at this time I am just about 13 and a half weeks and while the norco is a class 3, so is the neurontin but the neurontin has been known to cause pretty serious birth defects. It is not well known but there are studies out there, Neurontin is an anti seizure med. Besides the risks of birth defects with the diabetes, there are risks to myself with the diabetes and pregnancy as well.
He also said that the only birth defects in lab animals were because they were given toxic human doses. I am still worried i can't help it. I hope and pray for a baby that is beautiful and healthy and has no developmental or mental or physical disabilities or birth defects but only God and time will tell. I will go through the withdrawls myself so that the baby won't. I want to do that. Just concerned that i have damaged or harmed my baby. Scared of the outcome. I have chronic pain issues.
I currently take Tegretol, Neurontin, Seroquel, and BuSpar. I recently stopped taking Wellbutrin SR. I know that Tegretol causes neural tube deficits and heard that Calan is sometimes used as a mood stabilizer. I do not know much about Calan other than it's a calcium channel blocker and also used for high blood pressure. I've been on Tegretol for about 10 years, even if I stop taking it will it still be in my system and effect the baby? I'm already taking folic acid 800mcg/day.
Many of the things found as abnormal are considered to be birth defects that laid low until this spell. I do have a poorly defined cerebral aqueduct (aqueductual stenosis) and I'm missing the septium pellucidum and agensis of the corpus callosum. I believe my aqueduct possibly collapsed that night or became blocked causing the ICP and hydrocephalus. It took them close to 2 years to figure out all the rare findings and repeated a spinal tap done early on which showed 2x the normal pressure.
Does anyone have any personal knowledge of Opiate use and pregnancy? Does baby have withdrawls or any known birth defects? Neurontin use as well!
I was on it for 2 years for herniated disks in my neck but had to go off it immediately w my 1st baby as it can cause severe birth defects. Still a great option 4 those not in the pregnancy zone of life. I was pain FREE for 2 years. NON NARCOTIC, not addictive and only side effect was a bit of drowsiness as I go used to it. Hope this helps someone out there.
Most of the medications we use for this disorder tegratol and neurontin have been shown to produce defects in the fetus in tegratol and in animal studies in animals in neurontin. However, it should be noted that with tegratol, the lower dosage and the use of folic acid (which you should be taking anyway) have limited birth defects, but they are still present. Knowing the possibilities, you will have to make the choice.
html It is a category C and therefore not safe during pregnancy or nursing. My OB/GYN allowed me to take neurontin during pregnancy, but Lyrica has a higher chance of birth defects. The sight I gave you can give you more information. I just find that neurontin has basically no side effect and Lyrica does. I took Lyrica and the next day I was 10 times worse off due to pain and fatigue. But you have to decide for yourself whether this is the right drug for you.
hon you need to get off the xanax first before TTC..that is a high dose you are taking, and xanax can cause some pretty significant birth defects. I believe its a Category X drug which means you cannot use it all during pregnancy. Please, get off it first and THEN you can TTC that precious bundle of joy =) wishing you the best of luck.
You should be detoxed from the narcotics. the huge problem here is the xanax...xanax and valium are both known for causing birth defects. Sorry to be blunt, but it's true; they're avoided during the first trimester and RARELY prescribed in desperate situations during the 2nd. But quitting cold turkey can be dangerous. so you need to call, and call, and call until you find a doctor to safely taper you off of the xanax, or the valium, or whatever you're on.
I had a hysterectomy at 30 due to issues so my reproductive was messed up, I suffer kidney infections at least 6x a year.I also have a birth defect in my heart with the aorta valves. I take 1600mg neurontin, 50mg baclofen for spasms, 45mg morphine for pain and 15mg mobic for arthritis/degenerative disc disease. It helps a little but am still in constant severe spasm and on a scale of 1-10 my pain is 7 hitting 10 several times a day/night. These past 18 months have been bad.
However, I got very sick on the stuff, and no place did it adequately describe how dangerous those symptoms were TO ME. There had been lawsuits over birth defects, yet it might be a part of why I am now long term ill (there's a class action suit for a similare problem from it), and I didn't know enough to know to stop with the initial subtle symptoms instead of assuming I was just getting a cold so was in my body way too long while damaging it.
however they also stated there could be other issues such as infections/birth defects etc that may be the cause. It is frustrating that i feel like my body (bladder) has stopped responding...though I know I can handle doing what i need to do in order to empty it and protect my kidneys. The numbness and tingling which is fairly new to me is a bit worrisome. What I am curious to know is, Is it possible to be diagnosed with MS or another autoimmune disorder when you only have one or 2 symptoms?
Diabetes mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases characterized by high blood sugar (glucose) levels, that result from defects in insulin secretion, or action, or both. Diabetes mellitus, commonly referred to as diabetes (as it will be in this article) was first identified as a disease associated with "sweet urine," and excessive muscle loss in the ancient world. Elevated levels of blood glucose (hyperglycemia) lead to spillage of glucose into the urine, hence the term sweet urine.
I'm not sure as a young girl how I survived those. When I was in my mid 20's after the birth of 2 children they increased to more than one a month. My periods started to increase too. Lasting for up to 10 or 12 days. So heavy that I couldn't go anywhere for a couple of days because I couldn't keep up with it. After becoming anemic and my migraines so intense and frequent I finally had a thermal ablation. It saved my life. It also helped with the migrains a little.
Had my 1st son 8 yrs ago-after birth(thought I was going to die from pain during those 9 months!)saw MANY doctors - been told I have Spinal Stenosis, Fybromyalgia(SP?),Degenerative Spinal Cord Disease...Had back surgery 7 yrs ago-no help-Was on 120 MG of Oxycontin 2xs a day & 350MG of Percocet 2xs a day - then we found out we were pregnant. A real blessing, very happy but now Pain Management Doc is weening me off meds 20 MG @ a time.
org/afp/2005/0815/p655.html Ribavirin causes birth defects, fetal demise, serious hemolytic anemias, and worsening of cardiac disease. It also may be carcinogenic. Patients should be carefully counseled about the risks of these medications and monitored closely during treatment. Ribavirin can cause a hemolytic anemia. The traditional approach to hematologic toxicity has been reducing the dose of the offending antiviral; however, lower doses also may reduce treatment efficacy.
As has been mentioned here this is a birth defect and as you know birth defects don't go away. However, much relief can be had through education and or surgery if it's needed. But the education and the learning your limits... well that can be frustrating if you allow it to be. Your child will most likely have his own perspective at that age of how he chooses to view this. That could perhaps be your personal hardest challenge.
I dont want to scare you either but xanax is catagory x meaning it is known to cause birth defects and other serious issues like down syndrom or neural deffects in an unborn baby, I take oxycodone for chronic pain and my doc says it wil lnot harm the baby but we are working together to taper myself off enough prior to delivery that my baby should not experience withdrawl at least we hope I am still doubtful but I know at this point although so far I have managed to taper each month and still ha
I will continue to follow this thread myself and thank all the guinae pigs in this communal cage for giving us information that doctor's haven't even documented yet!!! Birth defects? Am I a terrible person for even contemplating risking my fetus to save myself, my husband, my child? My doctor doesn't recommend it - but my therapist does! I am in a tug of war - I can't afford to withdraw and relapse, I can't afford risking my fetus either!
Re: Neurontin and Neuropathy The use of Neurontin to treat neuropathy is an "Off Label" use. As such its dosing is an inexact science. Starter doses of 100mg/day can be ramped up to 3600mg/day over time. Docs will not likely take it off the table until the max dose is reached. I am currently maxed out at 3600mg/day. All by itself it didn't do much to relieve my neuropathic foot pain. We added Elavil to the equation and I began to get some relief.
the test for elevated homocysteine wont necessarily show it, either, and low folate/high homocysteine is linked to nerve problems, as well as depression/anxiety, gland disorders, fatigue, plaque, chf, infertility/birth defects, and a lot of other seemingly unrelated conditions. your doctor may not have heard of it, but at least 10% of the population has it. if you have any of these other problems, find someone who can test you for MTHFR deficiency and treat it.
I take 225mg of Effexor for my depression and anxiety, 900mg of neurontin for nerve pain and headaches and 50mg of topamax for headaches as well. When I had this second attack there were no new lesions, and they did think 3 mri's to check that. I think it's great that your doctor is being very proactive in doing the mri's every six months that's a great way to stay on top of it. If I had to say I would think that you probably had or have ADEM because of the one time deal and no other attacks.
I actually did not find out until about a year and a half later that I also had two fractures, spondilolithesis, and pars defects of my L5-S1. There went my dreams of playing D1 soccer! So they said fusion was the only option as my back was far from in alignment and I was having quite a bit of pain. I had the surgery and the recovery was very long and hard. I was 19 at the time. I am 22 now and live in constant pain.
I have been on Neurontin for many years and am now piggy backed with 100mg of Topamax. I quit before because of nausea and a very upset stomach with constant burning, loud burping (sorry) and over all queezy feeling. I really want the weight loss benefit but can't take this too long. The only reason I am able to make it this time is I stopped a few other meds-Previcid,Zocor and Celebrex. That makes it easier. I also have difficulty with soda or any carbonated drink.
