Common Questions and Answers about Neurontin and side effects

neurontin

382218 tn?1341181487 I have been on neurontin for a year now, and don't have double vision as a side effect. I have however suffered from the side effect of weight gain. Neurontin can cause a wide variety of side effects, many of which are exactly the same as some of the symptoms that we might have had to begin with. For example, I suffer from dizziness and vertigo, and a decrease in my fine motor skills and sensation in my hands.
653169 tn?1303446369 ve been told the start up side effects on Neurontin are about the same as Lyrica and it took me a little less than a week for that sleepy dopey feeling to subside, and after that I felt ABSOLUTELY normal- like I hadn't taken anything whatsoever. You are on a very SMALL dose, so you'll adjust to it quickly. I'll tell you a funny story- my first week on Lyrica- I accidentally backed out of my garage when the garage door was only half way open.
Avatar f tn Anyone have any side effects from starting neurontin or suggestions on how to adapt to using it. It's kicking my butt so far, so only taking it at night but a bit zoozy in the mornings. Am on 300mg, have titration orders but don't want to add any more at the present until I adjust to this night dose. anyone?
Avatar f tn Yes it has lots of side effects. Everyone does not get them all just be aware. I am on 16 drugs and keeping up with all the side effects and counter effects with other drugs is a nightmare. My Doctors who are prescribing them get confused at the counteractions. Also make sure you ask a Pharmacist before you take something for heartburn or a cold sometimes those drugs interact. Just do not ever just stop taking it. You have to taper off with a Doctor or Pharmacists help.
Avatar f tn I took neurontin for approx 10 years. It helped with my muscle spasms a great deal. I finally developed a tolerance to it up to the maximum recommended dosage, so switched to a different med. But it worked very well for me, with low side effects. Good luck.
Avatar f tn Thank you so much for your response to my questions about my neuropathy. It was very helpful. Since I posted, my doctor has started me on Neurontin and I am hopeful that it will help. I am trying to be patient. I will keep your tips in mind-being especially careful when using sharp objects! Thank you again.
1221035 tn?1301000508 I am taking a strong dosage of neurontin and I have the same effects as described. I can sit for up to 5-7 minutes before a flow begins. Not sure if it is the neurontin or a pain medication. I have nerve damage and need both medications.
1415174 tn?1453243103 Just to say, the post you're responding to is 11 years old so don't know if they're still here. Might be. I just wanted to say, since some will see this, that it's hard to find any prescription drug that doesn't have a ton of side effects. We keep finding more of them as the drug ages, and neurontin is an old drug.
Avatar f tn Did you taper off the vibryd or quit abruptly? You can't just switch from one medication to another even in the same class and avoid withdrawal -- these meds are not easy to stop taking and it must be done carefully. Unless you completely stop taking a medication before starting another it's impossible to tell if your symptoms are a sign you're suffering withdrawal and quit too quickly or are side effects of the new medication.
9704730 tn?1405741284 I still take 1200 mgs and there are days when I feel the strange side effects of Neurontin. Please include your prescribing dr in any discontinuance of your meds. Good Luck to you and go for it.
Avatar f tn I was given some sample bottles to try, but after reading the possible side effects and the possible effects from stopping its use, I decided to try some other ways of dealing with my neuropathy.
Avatar f tn My doc switched me from Neurontin to Lyrica because she said it had less side effects. She was wrong. A month later, the right side of my face went numb and I could not talk--I felt like I had mush mouth and thought maybe I was having a stroke. I talked to the pharmacist and he said 15 % of patients on Lyrica get ataxia, so he was not surprised. I went off of it and went back on the Neurontin. My doc told me some of her patients became incontinent on Lyrica so be careful.
Avatar f tn t have any severe side effects of concern, some dizziness, fatigue, nervousness and some minor nausea, all of which might have gone away in time if I had stayed on it longer. The only part that was annoying was the fact (don't know if its that way for every use) for it to work it had to be taken four times a day which was hard to remember but could be solved by keeping a pill box and/or other reminder devices.
Avatar f tn You are experiencing side effects of Neurontin, is all. Diff people react diff ways to it. Me, I have nausea that bothers me a lot. The weight gain you ask about is one of the side effects, as are the other problems you are having. I've been taking it for two years, and I also started out on Lyrica, but becuz of cost I had to switch. Neurontin has only been around for about 15 years, so for at least for that length of time you're good.
Avatar n tn Hi. I am bipolar and currently taking Lithium, Neurontin, Seroquel & Lamictal. I have only been on the Lamictal for about 7 weeks, starting @ 25mg & every 2 weeks adding another 25mg; thus I am currently @ 100mg per day.
1831849 tn?1383228392 Some people have side effects, some have different side effects, many have none at all. Both drugs have to be tapered upwards gradually, and decreased gradually when coming off. Another thing to remember is that the lowest dose of a drug is likely to be effective for only a relative few. Most people need to go considerably higher. So give you med a chance to work at a dose that's appropriate for you. And it's often true that a combination of meds is more effective than just one kind.
Avatar n tn I am experenced in all areas and more. I used neurontin many years ago, and had no ill effects. I use cymbalta now for diabetec neuropathy....When you are in trememdous pain, and terrible health you will take anything they give you. I am on 18 different prescriptions a day for heart, diabetes, asthma, emphasema, high blood pressure, fibromyalgia, a back that spasms so badly the muscle sticks out over an inch.....oh well etc etc etc....don't just say don't take it....
Avatar m tn I was on 1200mg/day and it took me two months to get off of it because I got insomnia and had to take benedryl to get off of it and be able to sleep. It is low on side effects except feeling tired and dumb. The nerves get over sensitive and send pain signals out even when you are probably not injured anymore. Once I got this in my head and started walking a lot. the pain tweeks started going away. Where is your pain and is it spinal/nerve or muscular?
620877 tn?1282764097 For those of you who take Gabapentin (Neurontin): Just curious what side effects you have experienced (and at what dosage), and how long they lasted? I just started this last weekend, 300mg once a day at bedtime. I am having a really hard time waking up in the morning and for the first half of the day I feel a little "loopy" or my head feels "swimmy"....if that makes any sense.....
1187071 tn?1279369698 I am on Gabapentin 300mg 2 a day, I have had weight gain since being on them, I have gained 15 lbs in 2 months time. I am sitting here thinking if he ups my meds like he wants to the side effect of weight gain will only get worse. I talked to the people where I get Gabapentin and they said that that side effect don't go away and if the dose is inceased it will only get worse so if the med isn't helping me there are other options.
Avatar f tn Typically the side-effects include somnolence, dizziness, and imbalance. Since you have been using Neurontin for 9 years, there does not seem to be a problem continuing it, even at a slightly increased dose. Also, Neurontin is not known to be triggering/escalating Alzheimer's disease. Best..
Avatar f tn Since upping my dose of Gabapentin to 1600mg daily for Neuropathy and Migraines I am retaining fluid and I have to push to pee. I am drinking lots and lots of water to counteract the swelling but wonder what the having to push to pee means.
Avatar n tn but i gotta work and lyrica wasnt really a choice for me if it would take a mth or more to adjust//and again many do not have these side effects...so i am back on neurontin and here i will stay lyrica is not recommended for anyone with addiction tendencies...i didnt like it so never saw a potentil for abuse..my friend has a filed day with the stuff tho...
630344 tn?1280104983 I'm taking the generic form, just recently resumed but have used it in the past. Neurontin is Rx-ed for nerve pain as an "off label" use, that it, treating nerve pain is not the function for which it was designed so it's not listed as a use on the manufacturer's label. It is actually an anti-seizure med, but it was found to also reduce neuropathy in patients. It is my understanding that Lyrica works much in the same way, and is a newer medication by the same company.
Avatar m tn Trembling/shaking, delusions, dementia - all listed in the side effects of Gabapentin on Drugs.com. I took it for a short period of time for nerve damage and all it did was make me tired...I wasn't on it but 5 or so days so I stopped taking it. If I were you I would call your Dr's office. Wishing you good luck!
