Not all SSRI (like Paxil) cause weight gain for all patients. But one study suggested that there might be differences in weight gain due to the different types of SSRI. Paroxetine (Paxil) may be more likely cause a significant weight gain than other drugs of this type (like fluoxetine or sertraline). Studies about citalopram found no significant weight changes for most patients (but a minority of about 5% of the patients had a weight gain of more than 5 kg).
I might have a solution for you after examining the pharmacology of Nefazodone. To get about the same result you had with Nefazodone with no weight gain I would recommend sertraline (Zoloft) combined with Wellbutrin XL. To get a significant antagonizing effect to your 5-HT2 receptors you would need mirtazapine but it is related with weight gain so I would try the Zoloft with Wellbutrin XL which will basically in a SNDRI like Nefazodone and see how it goes.
Zoloft (Sertraline) not a bad SSRI at dosages above 100Mgs a day, but it lacks the power to squash Major depression when it is really bad.
I have been on all three drugs and none helped me either so try not to get frustrated.
You just found out what doesn't work for you and thats a good thing because now you can take steps toward more effective medication combinations.
I've had chronic, severe nausea for the past year and I can't take it anymore. I get nauseated after everything I eat. It doesn't matter what. I can't even have breakfast anymore (I went from eating solids to drinking liquids, and now I can't eat anything at all). Sometimes I feel like I'm not even hungry, and other times I feel horribly hungry. I can only have small meals now and I can't have dairy or bread.
Anyway, there are lots of options - ranging from a number of medications that have been well studied such as nefazodone, mirtazapine, and the tricyclic antidepressants, to supplements that seem to be effective (although probably somewhat less so) such as hypericum and s-adenosyl methionine. Finally there are a number of medications that are not routinely prescribed for depression that might be of use, and that list is a bit long to put here.
In any event, the answer is yes.
He suggested that this is autoimmune in nature and that an SSRI may help. i tried Prozac for a week once and some of my endocrine bloodwork went wacky (prolactin level was 165, normal is no higher than 30 and I was having hot flashes) Have any of you had any luck with an antidepressant in this class? My primary doc is reluctant as he says i am not depressed, although the situation can be depressing.

The doctor decided I should try another SSRI. Which makes sense cause I have read a lot of blogs where people have had their SSRI "poop out" on them over time. I started the Zoloft on 25 mg for the first week and went down to 10 mg of the Paxil the same week, then 50 mg Zoloft the next week and 5mg Paxil, the following week I stayed at the same 50 mg Zoloft and went to 2.5 paxil. During all of this time I had the horrible side effects from starting and withdrawing from SSRI meds.
Can you take an ssri antidepressant forever or will it eventually not work because of tolerance build up? Is tolerance even an issue with an ssri? if you do build a tolerance, then can you only take a ssri until your tolerance builds to the point where you would have to take more than the allowed maximum prescription? so what are you to do if you need an ssri forever and the amount you need is above what is safely prescribed?
I just signed up to this forum. I have never done anything like this before. But, I really need help. The irony is I am a master's level therapist, and have been for many years. I believe I may be suffering so I can relate and better help my clients. I am in practice with a psychiatrist, but have not told her of this. I guess I am embarrassed. Anyhow, approx. 3 years ago a physician friend prescribed PAXIL for my mild OCD symptoms, my own diagnoses.
Usually, an antidepressant like an SSRI is prescribed and a benzo is given short term, until the side effects of the SSRI (if any) start to subside...and the SSRI starts doing its job. Also keep in mind that it takes generally 2-4 weeks for an SSRI to really start making a difference. For some people, it can take up to 6-8 weeks.
Generally, the idea is...once the SSRI starts working, the need for the benzo will decrease automatically.
The interaction has also been reported in patients receiving atorvastatin, lovastatin, or simvastatin with other potent CYP450 3A4 inhibitors such as azole antifungal agents, macrolide antibiotics, HIV protease inhibitors, and nefazodone. Clinically, high levels of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitory activity in plasma may be associated with an increased risk of musculoskeletal toxicity.
