Avatar n tn When it occurs upon falling asleep, the person remains aware while the body shuts down for REM sleep, and it is called hypnagogic or predormital sleep paralysis. When it occurs upon awakening, the person becomes aware before the REM cycle is complete, and it is called hypnopompic or postdormital. The paralysis can last from several seconds to several minutes, with some rare cases being hours, "by which the individual may experience panic symptoms" (described below).

Avatar f tn Hi matd, I broke my neck playing softball some years ago and have had issues with neck pain and shoulder pain as well as headaches periodically. I have purchased several expensive pillows that promised to relieve the headaches and pain but none of them worked. Avatar m tn If you are getting adequate and good quality sleep and do not have sleep apnea or on suspect meds, seems hypnopompic hallucinations could be an explanation since you describe them as upon awakening. I have a friend who has this happen due to a med she must take. She keeps a flashlight nearby and when she wakes up and sees it, she shines the flashlight on it an the image disappears.

Avatar n tn I am back to office work and am experiencing severe neck and R arm pain in the past month. My pain was mainly L sided prior to surgery. I was told also that C5 was bulging but I had no symptoms pre- surgery. Doctors feel that it is nerve related due to surgery and may improve. This is getting progressively worse and I am in a great deal of pain. The pain I have in the neck is actually at the base of my spine on the 'hump' below the fusion site.

Or is there any way to know since everyone is different.
Avatar m tn My first question to you is whether you have erections upon awakening. If so, that would indicate that your penis is working just fine, it's your head that's getting in the way. On the other hand, if you're not having erections upon awakening or at other times when not with your partner (during self-pleasuring, for instance), then it's most likely there's a physiological cause. And so-called "enhancers" are a waste of time and money.
