4338916 tn?1353028729 I few days again, I experenced a pain from the upper part of my neck and it seemed to enter the lower part of my brain. It would throb and got away for a millasecond then come back. As I was in the waiting room of the hospital, my mother was rubbing my neck and she felt a bump on my head. She then asked me if I had fallen and I had confirmed that I had not. She was terrified by that point. That same day, as I was in my room at the hospital I had starting coughing like crazy.
Avatar n tn The main symptoms include pain and spasms in the neck area. It is important to treat the underlying cause of occipital neuritis. Other options include surgery, pain medications and injections at the site of pain. Occipital neuralgia involving nerves between the scalp and skull are usually is a very painful condition. Occipital nerve blocks are usually useful in such conditions. Take care!

Avatar f tn Back in January I started having the same burning feeling on the top left side of my head, but also above my left eyebrow, and the back left side of my head, neck, and left shoulder. I finally went to a Neuro who diagnosed me with occipital neuralgia. I too, have a messed up neck with bone spurs, bulging disc that are pushing on the covering of my spinal cord, but not the actual cord. Anyway, I have been in horrid pain since Jan.

Avatar n tn Hi, The symptoms could be due to a nerve impingement in the neck or upper back that may lead to the symptoms of burning sensation in the neck and shoulder. The symptoms may be aggravated by occipital neuralgia and neck osteoarthritis. To get details about the neck and back please go for MRI of the spine. It gives the minute details. Please consult a neurologist for diagnosis of the problem and treatment. Hope this helps you. Take care and regards!

Avatar f tn It can originate from the neck, where there are occipital nerves in the neck. You should have had a jerk to the neck to stretch these nerves and produce headache. Another possibility is that of hypertension. High blood pressure can also cause such headaches. It is always better to get this evaluated by a doctor.
2120971 tn?1334891492 But after walking around for nearly a year with s broken neck I now suffer from chronic shoulder, neck and back of my head pain! And the terrible occipital pain every single day. I would like advice on what may help me.
Avatar m tn It presents with one sided pain in the temple area ( not neck pain), jaw pain and pain when chewing. It is associated with elevated ESR in the blood ( an inflammatory marker) and needs to be treated with steroids ASAP as it can cause vision loss. Again it is highly unlikely that you mother has this. Occipital neuralgia seems more likely. I hope this helps. Good luck.
Avatar n tn Great reply! Yes, indeed I have injured my neck on several occasions. The first time was when I was hit from behind by an 18 wheeler truck. I saw a Neurologist at the end of last month and explained my symptoms in detail. Unfortunately, he was quick to make a diagnosis of MIRGRAINE and sent me on my way. He really lacked any enthusiasm to further investigate my occipital pain. I did seek out the services of an Orthopedist who recommended an MRI.
Avatar n tn Occipital neuralgia is a chronic pain disorder caused by irritation or injury to the occipital nerve located in the back of the scalp. Individuals with the disorder experience pain originating at the nape of the neck. The pain, often described as throbbing and migraine-like, spreads up and around the forehead and scalp. Occipital neuralgia can result from physical stress, trauma, or repeated contraction of the muscles of the neck.

Avatar f tn What symptoms have you had? I have had everything from burning scalp, sensitive scalp, head twinges, chronic neck & shoulder pain & yes i do clench my teeth badly- with stress. The burning pain i had was where a hair band would sit (kinda where rams horns are). I have considered occipital neuralgia myself but the doctor constantly tells me its stress which is very annoying. I have also considered TMJ but the literature i have found hasn't been great.
Avatar f tn The headaches may develop early (within 2 weeks) or they may not develop these migraines until months following the injury. Many patients have associated neck and posterior occipital pain. The cervical pain and headaches may resolve at different times. There may be other associated symptoms like poor concentration, irritability, sensitivity to noise or bright lights, depression, dizziness or vertigo, tinnitus, memory problems, fatigue, insomnia, nervousness or anxiety.

Avatar m tn If my temporal and occipital nerves are cut will this take away the pain? And my biggest question is if the nerves are cut and i am STILL in pain after surgery than what can this be?! What else in my head besides the occipital and temporal nerves can cause this pain????????
Avatar f tn I saw in a catalog a device to lay on, that put pressure on the occipital area, to treat and relieve occipital neuralgia pain. It wasn't a pillow to sleep on, it was similar to what a physical therapist does with finger pressure, to be used for a short time. Can anyone help me come up with a name for this "thingie" LOL. Of course, now I can't find the catalog to order it. I have been suffering from severe occipital pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, and constant muscle spasms.
Avatar n tn I guess the doc must have hit the occipital nerve because since then i have had extreme pain where the occipital nerve runs from the base of my skull up and around the top of ear and ends at temple (all on the right side). I called doc several times right after the procedure, his response was that was normal just keep icing it then heat and ibuprofen. By the way, No pain meds were given to me after this procedure. Aftter about 2 weeks, pain was getting a little better but still hurting.
