Avatar f tn There are many symptoms of a migraine and you can experience one or all or any number in between. What causes the pain of a migraine is the blood vessels in your brain become dilated so, it usually helps if you apply a bit of pressure on those blood vessels. You are probably doing that already, unconsciously with your fingers. Get a cloth headband or even a bandanna and wrap it snugly around your head. You can also rub Mentholatum across your forehead and temples.
Avatar f tn precipitation of head pain by neck movement or awkward neck positions, head pain when external pressure is applied to the neck or occipital region (as it sounds like is the case in you), restricted range of motion of the neck, and neck, shoulder and arm pain. Treatment for cervicogenic headache includes physical therapy, medications including anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs such as ibuprofen), muscle relaxants, behavioral therapy, and other modalities.
Avatar n tn Sharp pain and sometimes warm/feverish and is always on the same spot of left top head side. Her neck also always hurt 24/7 and whenever she presses her neck, it also triggers the migraine. Can it be hormonal because that is what she is saying. Thank you very much for taking the time and have a good day ahead!
Avatar f tn The only relief I received was when I was given dilauded IV. I have a history of severe neck pain after a migraine attack and it sometimes triggers yet another migraine if I don't treat the neck pain. My history with narcotics is limited to a few surgeries I have had in the past. But with every time I've needed something narcotic, my doctor has had to "play" with what I get because I seem to have a "tolerance" which makes me have to get stronger meds.
Avatar f tn It could be a migraine headache since you are sensitive to light and sound, although migraine headaches are less likely to involve neck pain. My migraine headaches involve neck pain and I know a few other people on the forum whose migraines involve neck pain, but that is not as common. So, since it does not exactly fit the pattern of migraine, I'd go see a doctor.

Avatar f tn My girlfriend has had migraines for most of her life, it runs in her immediate family. Symptoms include sharp pain in the back of her head and/or neck, dizziness, blurry vision, loss of hearing or ringing in her ears and sometimes feels like she's going to pass out. She had a CT scan and they said it was clean but she's scared. Is it just really bad headaches or could they have missed something worse?
Avatar f tn but you would describe the pain as severe pain or moderate to severe pain... then it could be migraine headaches. Also, how long do these headaches normally last for? If the pain only last for seconds, then you could be suffering from icepick headaches. If these headaches are cluster headaches or migraines, then parametemol/codeine are NOT the right type of treatment at all!!! Also, if you are suffering from icepick headaches...
Avatar m tn I have recurring migraines and found a new commonality that might help in solving them. Prior to, during, and after the migraine I have severe cracking (crackling, popping) in my neck. I have been trained to do neck exercises by pain management and I did then last week, it resulted in a 3-day migraine where pain went from left side and neck to right side and when worse it's usually behind my eye or temple area. Its not as severe when in back of my head.
Avatar n tn Your headache is not typical of migraine. But after eliminating the above mentioned causes, we can think of migraine, occipital neuralgia or tension type headaches. In tension type headaches, there is usually a tight band like sensation around the head. I have not read such a description in your post. Occipital neuralgia may be a cause to explore. If you have had any neck injury, the occipital nerves may get stretched and you may get the headaches at the occipital region.

Avatar f tn The symptoms ‘choking me around the neck with severe dizziness and nausea’ could be the warning symptoms of headache especially migraine. It could also be a part of tension headache. You could discuss with your doctor and start medicines for migraine. If you feel better, the diagnosis is confirmed. Do you have a family history of migraine? Did you have MRI of cervical spine or brain? Spondylitis also causes similar symptoms. Meniere’s disease of the ear should also be ruled out.
Avatar f tn If you use computer a lot or read a lot then the symptoms of headache, dizziness, neck pain, numbness etc could be due to compression of the spinal nerves in the cervical spine region. This can happen due to overuse of computers, work involving straining of neck, herniated disc, canal stenosis, bone disease, spondylosis, poor posture etc. A MRI of the cervical spine and nerve conduction studies may be required. Please consult a neurologist.

Avatar f tn One is dental ache as in an exposed root canal. This causes shooting unbearable pain radiating to head, neck, shoulder, ear, everywhere in the head and neck region I would say. A visit to your dentist is a must and should be the first step. The second possibility is an internal ear pain. Again it is the same as dental pain. Consult an ENT specialist for this. The symptoms that you have enumerated can also point towards spinal nerve compression at the cervical vertebral level.
Avatar f tn There are many causes for pain in head and neck region. If no cause is found, we try the 'straitjacket' diagnoses of primary headaches, like migraine. Your pain in the neck and shoulder on one side, and the history of whiplash many years back, points to a headache caused by injury to the cervical spine or its neighboring structures. (Cervicogenic Headache) Even among doctors, this is a controversial entity.

Also, sharp jabbing pains may suggest several differentials like trigeminal neuralgia, cluster headaches, hemicrania continua, paroxysmal hemicrania and SUNCT headaches. Arthritic pain due to musculoskeletal causes may also present as sharp pains.
