Common Questions and Answers about Neck and shoulder pain with numbness

Two weeks ago I woke up with the terrible pain in my left shoulder and lower neck. I work out a lot and have been under unusual stress. Bed I was sleeping in was terrible. I went to ER fearing a heart attack. All clear on that account. Doc told me I had a pinched nerve or severe muscle strain. Got hydrocodone and it helped some. Went on a 5 day cruise thinking it would be relaxing. Got a very vigorous massage - very bad decision.
You could have symptoms of an early Upper Limb Radiculopathy. It starts with neck pain pain / spasms / numbness with radiation of this pain and numbness along the nerve root affected. It is caused by a pressure on the exiting nerve roots by bulging inter vertebral discs. You probably need to be seen by an Orthopedist.
Six months ago, I strained my muscle between my neck and shoulder, after running. Sometimes, the pain started at the base of the skull and at times my shoulder. I went to the doctor and took a xray that did not show a dislocated or herinated disc. I went on vacation and did not run but swim. I was free of pain. I have started back to running and thepain is back. What could be wrong?
) in a small space between each vertebra called the neural foramen, on each side of the spine, nerve roots exit the spinal cord. These nerves branch and branch to innervate the neck, shoulder, arms, and hands. Vertebra above diseased discs have a tendency to tilt because their support has been undermined by dessication of the disc.

The most recent pain has been in my right leg. I have a shooting pain that travels down my thigh to my calves and into my toes. It feels as my muscles are locking up and comes and goes every couple of days. I am not sure if this is related to the headaches and other pains.... but who knows.

The front of my shoulder (where it meets the arm) is always sore, and I generally have pain under my shoulder blade. Last night, I felt it popping, then again, and shoulder and most of my hand and wrist went mostly numb. It's been about 10 hours, and I still have some numbness in the back of my shoulder (below the shoulder blade) and wrist. There's some tenderness in the back of my shoulder as well but no soreness in the front. It's uncomfortable to move my shoulder, but mostly doable.

While it is possible that you sustained a muscle strain due to your golfing, it is likely that you may have some degenerative disc disease in your cervical spine. DDD is a normal process of the wear and tear on our spine as we age and increases with additional stressors such as repetitive movements. The symptoms you describe could be related to abnormalities in your cervical spine.
I have had no heart problems since other than they occasional palpitation which are benign. About a week ago I started getting pain that started at my neck and shoulder all the way down to my fingers (mostly my middle and ring finger). Anyone know what this may be due to? I have no heart symtoms - no shortness of breath, no chest pain, no dizziness, etc. I had a complete heart checkup (ultrasound, stress-test, etc.) and all came back perfect. I also had an EKG (yeah, I know..
You may certainly have wrist tendonitis, but why the neck and shoulder pain. The pain and numbness you are having could be from your neck and an EMG would assist with that answer. It is a nerve conduction study. You also need an xray and MRI of your neck to rule out that as a cause for your numbness. I would see a neurologist.

Hello I had a neck fusion at c5/c6 about 3 years ago and now I have neck pain, shoulder to shoulder pain, and pain through my left arm, tingling and some numbness on two small left fingers and some headache. My recent MRI shows I have a broad-base disk bulging at c/4/c5 with AP canal diameters of about 8 mm, @ c3/c4 minimal disk bulge and c6/c7 minimal broad-base disk bulge. Can I get the prestige disk replacement and could it help with the problems I am having?
I have had chronic Left Shoulder/neck pain for almost 3yrs now. My symptoms have been; Prominent Left Sterno-clavicular joint with inflammation surrounding, prominent Left Acrimio-clavicular joint, flat Left Scapular with inflammation along the vertebral border, inflammation of left pectoralis major muscle, chronic pain from bottom of scapular right up to the base of scull, extending out to rotator cuff.
I have found that a lot of my pain and numbness in my arm, shoulder and rib cage were helped by a therapeutic massage therapist. I found a great one who had worked previously in chiropractic office too. So it's the best of both worlds. It can't hurt (well, actually it can! My last massage really got to the nub of the pain). So it's worth a try. It really helped me.
This time after a few days went by, I was getting up from doing something, and something happened in my neck and shoulder area. I had the most excusiating pain in my neck, shoulder and arm. I began getting these sharp stabbing pains down my right arm and also the right side of my chest and shoulder area. The pain was like no pain i've ever felt. It laid me up for about 4 days, just laying on the couch. I never went to the doctor due to insurace reasons.
neck and shoulder pain are kind of related. I have herniated discs in my neck and I get shoulder pain that goes down my arms, but I don't get numbness (at least not yet). Also, you said you get grinding. All you can do is get at least an x-ray of that area. Maybe you can go to a walk-in clinic or something. It sounds serious to me. If it was just a strain, I think it would have gone away by now.

I've been experiencing this horrible pain on my shoulder and neck. About a month ago I went to the ER because my arm (all of this is only affecting my right side) was feeling numb and in so much pain. They only gave me some painkillers and a shot (I don't remember what that was) and said it should relieve the pain and would probably make me sleepy, but it didn't, it did not relieve the pain. The next day I went to the doctor and she gave me some pills (orphenadrine and dicloflenac sodium).
Because i have had 5 surgeries on my arms the pain is still there ,i now have neck and shoulder pain along with my hands falling asleep.i did not have the neck, shoulder and hand issues before all the arm surgeries. now i am told i have this herniation and i'm wondering if i really needed all those surgeries, was it a disc herniation all along and i might have been misdiagnosed.
I have pain in my neck, right shoulder blade area and my right arm. The pain is different depending on what I am doing. When lowering my head to get in my car or just moving up and down, the pain is in my neck. Sitting in bed it is in my shoulder and arm and sometimes my arm will have a slight numbing sensation. Coughing and sneezing, there is shooting pains through all three. Does anyone have any ideas what might be causing this?
Along with this pressure in my left temple, I have had neck pain, pain in my left shoulder....and numbness in my face and legs. I have had episodes of anxiety and felt like I was going to pass out. Went to the Dr. after about a week of the same issues non-stop. They gave me a CT scan, ran blood tests.....and everything checked out as fine. The Dr. (who is new to me) suggested I go to the ER...I don't feel like I am having enough issues to warrant an ER visit.
Since being assaulted by a resident in a care home that I work at I have experienced onging and increasing pain in my shoulder, stiffness in my neck, pain in my arm and numbness with occasional shooting pain into my hand. I often have problems holding onto things with this hand, or I lose strength in it very suddenly. It is my left and dominant side.
