Neck and shoulder pain when sleeping

Common Questions and Answers about Neck and shoulder pain when sleeping

neck

Currently the pain gets so bad at times that I can't even think. I must confess that when this pain started I was sleeping on the couch for about a year. I tried physical therapy and it doesn't seem to work. Can someone please help.....
I recently made a cotton neck roll to place between me and my pillow (to help support my neck) and it has helped slightly. I tried memory foam pillows but they are just to big or high for my comfort. I also have a long neck. During the day I do have some neck pain, but it's not really that bad (it used to be so bad but I fixed it with physical therapy). I also use hot and cold packs which fix my neck during the day, if needed.
Instead trying acupunture for back shoulder neck pain. I have started doing Yoga and am trying to work out everyday also. I have a little added bonus, I have a heart defect and had to have open heart surgery last year, that is why Im guarded in taking any of the meds. I have something called the Ms hug does anyone else out there have this sympton?
I also had to sit in a waiting room for a long time with my husband for his dr. appt. I always have a lot of back and shoulder pain when I ride in a car. I hadn't slept very well the last few days so I took and ambien and a sleeping pill along with a pain pill to sleep. I finally slept a few hours that made me feel better this morning.
Im the same as above, `i only get this when im lying in bed asleep and then i wake up in real pain, my shoulder blade hurts causing the pain to get worse on my shoulder which, causes numbness, tingling, horrific pain, arm is limited and i seriously dont know what it is or how to get rid.

Although without being able to examine you I can not offer you the specific advice on diagnosis and treatment that you need, but I would try to provide you some relevant information about your health concern. Generally pain in the arm and shoulder pain originates from the pinched nerve in shoulder or neck problems due to irritation in the cervical (neck) spine because the nerves that supply the back of the head start in the upper cervical spine.
i have recurring shoulder and kneck aches that usually occur when i am nauseous or dehydrated but also for no apparent reason at all. The pain is like an annoying ache that keeps me up from sleeping at night. I always pop my neck because it feels so tense and massage my shoulders but it is an everyday constant.
On 26 Aug 2008, I had a total parotidectomy due to a 5 cm deep lobe tumor. After the surgery pain subsided, I was free from the head/neck/shoulder pain for about a month. Since then, the pain has gotten worse, however two additional locations have started to hurt. It is now on the side of my head (between my eye and ear) and deep in my neck. It has accelerated to a boiling point, much like it did right before I was referred to the ENT who performed my surgery.
When my husband massages my neck and shoulder, it does ache/hurt to touch it. But it does feel good too cause it feels like he is getting somewhere with it/ some relief.! But it gets right back to the ache/pain when I try and go to sleep. What is this? And should I go see A Chiropractor?
All of this was being done with my backbrace on because this is what they considered light duty. When my neck popped I was in so much pain crying I couldn't even move my head and barely hold it up. The workmen's comp doc said I was faking that ther was nothing that i did to cause any problems. Another doc later an a mri showed the disc problems in my neck. My L4-5 is so so as long as I don't push it.
Pain in the shoulder blade area along with radiation of pain to the arm (may also cause tingling and numbness in the fingers) can be caused by disc problems in the neck. The intervertebral disc degenerates and can cause pressure to be placed on an exiting spinal nerve root which produces the symptoms you describe. Absent any traumatic event, these degenerative changes occur as a normal process of wear and tear on the spine.
Two weeks ago I woke up with the terrible pain in my left shoulder and lower neck. I work out a lot and have been under unusual stress. Bed I was sleeping in was terrible. I went to ER fearing a heart attack. All clear on that account. Doc told me I had a pinched nerve or severe muscle strain. Got hydrocodone and it helped some. Went on a 5 day cruise thinking it would be relaxing. Got a very vigorous massage - very bad decision.
My name is LISA and I am a 40-year-old woman with pain concentrated in my left shoulder and radiating to my upper arm and armpit area. I also have numbness and tingling traveling down my left arm to my little finger. This pain and numbness intensifies on movement of the shoulder such as lifting my arm across my body, sitting, sleeping and moving It also is very uncomfortable to sleep at night. I can not lie on my left side as it causes increased pain and numbness to the arm.
I often have shoulder pain and I too have arthritis and Osteo. My pain comes if I carry a purse over my should, or wear a bra too long. when I get home from anywhere...Off come the bra! The straps kill me. I have found if I stop carrying thins on my shoulder or do not lift anything over a few pounds I do alright. Lifted a bag of garden mulch the other day and mt neck aand shoulder was killing me.
Went to phisio, which helped with the initial horrible pain, but now I still have shoulder and upper shoulder blade pain, and also neck pain, occasionally along with it.There are times when the pain is still felt in my chest as well, although numerous trips to the hospital has assured me that mu heart is fine.(still a very scary feeling!)I also occasionally have a numbness in my left arm. Please help with suggestions!!! I've had an MRI done on my neck, and that was fine too.
That was a PT suggestion and it keeps my neck from jerking and hurting during the night. My neck pain had been keeping me from sleeping. I still wake up, but not like I used to. I hope to see my doctor tomorrow because I've had a very bad weekend. I'm going to push for that MRI. No one was more surprised than me that my EMG was negative, and after the results of that test, I feel like I'm not being taken completely serious by doc.
I have continual chronic pain in my neck when lying down. It is in the back of my neck and feels like I'm sleeping on a sharp rock that keeps poking me and attacks the areas around my neck. I've been through physical therapy five times. I've had acupuncture once. Could this be due to the sciatic nerve from a herniated disc I have at the L5 S1 lumbar spine. This nerve has caused me pain down my left leg with stinging and numbing tingling if I stand, lift or walk too long. I need sleep.
Roll a towel and place it under your neck while sleeping on the back and between head and shoulder when lying on the side. Initially this will be uncomfortable but with time the acupressure will work. Use an analgesic cream or spray. Anti-inflammatory drugs and muscle relaxants also help. Also, you must improve your posture while sitting and working. Manual therapy, neck exercises etc should all be tried as all these can help relieve pain. Do show this to your doctor once. Take care!
I also have pain at the top of my right leg. It hurts more when I first stand, but lessens as I walk. The pain in my neck is constant...its like a stiff neck. The arm sometimes has shooting pain, but mostly when I turn it a certain way.I also have slight pain in my lower back and sides but nothing like the other pain. I have not changed mattress, pillows or my sleeping habits. I've done nothing to injure myself that I am aware of. I do not feel sick.

He gave me the injection in a trigger point and miraculously the pain in my shoulder AND neck disappeared for about 4 or 5 months. When it came back I thought I could get another injection, however, the second time it didn't help. I asked the doctor to MRI my shoulder since the relief of pain from the injection indicated that my shoulder might be the culprit of the neck pain. Instead he sent me to a rheumatologist to check for fibromyalgia.

Back then I had severe pain when I turned my neck, it would start from neck down my shoulder to arm and hand with pain, tingling, and numbness but with little relief. At this time in 1989 this pain affected my left side only. I saw doctor immediately and started with conservative tx then physical therapy but nothing helped. Finally found a NS and Orth surgeon and agreed to the above surgery. Surgery went fine and pain went away.
But then I wake up this morning and the whole back of my neck is in pain, and I cant stretch it or touch it without pain. And it comes with verry annoying pains in both temples and ears and behind my eyes as well. And thats not the worst part, my shoulders both are in pain when I move them, or lift things. All the way down to the palms of my hands, and then when I change sleeping positions at night, my hips hurt the same way and all the way down to my feet ..
hi, i just had a mri of my neck and c-5 and c-7 are ruptured. I ve had 4 episode this year of server pain. and each time pain last for a good month. My appoint with a nuero sergeon is in september 4, 2002. What am i to expect with first office visit. How risky is it to have discs repaired. What options do you think I have.
Since you have pain in raising and folding the arm, you could be having a shoulder joint pain referred to your neck and arm. This can be due to arthritis, rotator cuff injury or bursitis. The other possibility is pinched nerve in the neck. Sometimes, clinical examination is not enough. You may need X-rays and MRI of the upper vertebral and shoulder joints. Please discuss this with your doctor. Take care!
