Neck and shoulder pain after running

Common Questions and Answers about Neck and shoulder pain after running

Six months ago, I strained my muscle between my neck and shoulder, after running. Sometimes, the pain started at the base of the skull and at times my shoulder. I went to the doctor and took a xray that did not show a dislocated or herinated disc. I went on vacation and did not run but swim. I was free of pain. I have started back to running and thepain is back. What could be wrong?
I'm still unsure as to whether or not I have chiari malformation, but have been having pretty bad neck stiffness with the pain now moving down my spine to between/just below my shoulders (the pain between my shoulders is a sharp pain whereas my neck pain is dull). Has anyone with chiari experienced symptoms like this? I'm currently waiting on my doctor to schedule me a cine MRI scan. I've been told that this is the only true way to determine if the CSF Flow is normal or constricted.
I was running only for about 2 minutes and I had pain in my shoulder blade and the top of my shoulder, up my neck and that night down my arm too. The first day I did cry. It has now been 5 days and the pain is tolerable, but uncomfortable. I was on my couch for 3 days just resting after the first day. I do notice throughout the day like today my neck is starting to hurt again and my shoulder blade. I did schedule a Dr's appt on Friday.
An xray of your shoulder is useless unless you fractured or broke it. I say it is pain radiating from your neck that is aggravating your shoulder and I ain't no doctor. LOL Gettting a bath by your daughter and husband must have made you feel like an old lady! But I understand. My son has had to hold me up while walking to the bathroom numerous times. My doctor told me Friday that he cannot guarantee I will be back in school in August.
In 09/2005 he sent me to have another ct scan after sever loss of hand control and still sharp pain in right side of neck and shoulder pins and neddes in the hand and fingers. the results was a pinched nerve at c7-t1. back to surgery in 11-2005 after lossing our son in a motorcycle accident in 10/2005. the surgery was great the pain at the neck area was released during the surgery. but still had major pain in hand and shoulder and back.
I was in a car accident last May. Have 2 Bulging discs in neck. I have severe pain in me neck and back and shoulder. I had a nerve block done on Wednesday, dont feel to bad. Drs saying its not herniated and not pinching any nerves nothing they can do. Doed that mean I have to wait for them to herniate before anything can be done. Nerve block will only last a couple of weeks. On muscle relaxers and migraine meds. never had this problem before dont know what to do.
It's now a year later and I don't have the constant pain like I did, but if I try to stretch my arm or move it a certain way, I get a burning feeling the runs from my right shoulder all the way down my arm to my hand, the burning pain usually goes away after a couple min. I can still use my arm, but I don't have the same range of motion, I can't lie with my arm under my head, and even trying to shave my legs is a chore. Anyone have any idea what might be wrong.
My name is LISA and I am a 40-year-old woman with pain concentrated in my left shoulder and radiating to my upper arm and armpit area. I also have numbness and tingling traveling down my left arm to my little finger. This pain and numbness intensifies on movement of the shoulder such as lifting my arm across my body, sitting, sleeping and moving It also is very uncomfortable to sleep at night. I can not lie on my left side as it causes increased pain and numbness to the arm.
That was a PT suggestion and it keeps my neck from jerking and hurting during the night. My neck pain had been keeping me from sleeping. I still wake up, but not like I used to. I hope to see my doctor tomorrow because I've had a very bad weekend. I'm going to push for that MRI. No one was more surprised than me that my EMG was negative, and after the results of that test, I feel like I'm not being taken completely serious by doc.
Ive been to the ER 7 times and no one could diagnose the problem ive had a ct scan and mri. The neck pain is in the upper area of the neck near the head and the back pain is in the center area. ive seen a chripractor and he's tried several adjustments but none seem to help and he thinks its in the cervical area where the brain rests. My neurologist sent me to physical therapy and it did not help it caused the condition to worsen so i was released from it.

2,2007,had another blackout at a bar, same feeling of taken advantage of,then 6 days later had aches, still neck stiffness, stiffness in shoulders, sensitive ear and jaw, stuffy nose, slight headache,no fever at all,one night woke up sweating, cannot sleep throughout night, morning dirreah(sp?),chills for 2 days, tiredness, anxiety, lost appetite, dry mouth. My lymph nodes don't feel swelled and I keep checking my mouth for thrush and don't see anything.
I have pain between my shoulder blades and tightness and popping in my back and chest for 10 years now. I am 30 yrs old and have been to the physical therapist and chiropractor also for this problem. I noticed the problem started when I was around 20 years old when I first started working at a job where I was at a computer all day.
I had burning in the shoulder blade, back of neck and spasm like pain that seemed to move around the upper back and sometimes in the Sac area. The last CT scans(2003) came back and I was told I have two fused vertebrae in the cervical spine that I most likely was born with, some deterioration of the discs in my neck and lower back due to degeneration. I am unclear as to why no one told me about the fusion before. Still I was told the real problem is the Fibromyalgia.
Is a needle like pain in shoulder and radiates all the way down my right arm. It starts five to min after i have the drink and sometimes it lasts for hours, causing me not to sleep because of the pain. It helps when someone rubs or hits my harm slightly to help ease the horrible pain. Feels like my chest was about to burst open, had a hard time breathing. Yesterday I had it for the first time with a wine cooler and that's what prompt me to search for a cause and came upon this forum.
The pain is always present and will start off in my upper back and slowly work it's way up into the side/back of the right side of my neck. I also have tons of knots in my upper back and I'm aware that I have a bit of head forward posture. My shoulder on the right side I believe is the culprit. It is much weaker than the left side and is rolled forward badly. I have gone through tons of exercises to correct this problem but they don't seem to help.
Eventually the anxiety got better after alot of different meds---and I didn't notice the floaters so much and i hardly ever notice the ringing in my ears anymore. The neck and shoulder pain and headaches started almost 13 years ago and progressed to all over pain. We've been calling it fibro for years, but I have a number of endocrine issues that I am working on getting corrected and some deficiencies that I am working on, also.
I was wondering if a fall on to my left hand(arm outstretched) could possibly cause a pinched nerve in my neck. I have pain in my shoulder and radiating pain down to elbow. Seems that Rotator Cuff is ok(ultrasound) Could be some bursa problem. Very tender spot in neck, feels like pinched nerve to me,quite painful to touch. I do have a slight Carpal Tendon Problem, but this was diagnosed before my fall. Since my fall, my hand gets a lot more tingly and numb.
Nerve root compression at that level can cause triceps weakness and decreased reflex. It can also refer pain into shoulder blade area and cause pain in your wrist and forearm. When this happen to me, I had everything you have and I was getting a lot of shocking pain in my shoulder, arm and hand. It was horrible. My thumb and first 2 fingers went numb. If your doctor can keep you supplied with Vicoden and muscle relaxants till December, you could probably make it.
i have had very similar symptoms to yours. nothing jumps out on my mri either. neck pain, shoulder pain, arm pain and even chest pain-- and it tended to bounce around. 2 days in the back, 3 days in the arm, then the chest, etc....i had neck surgery (minimally invasive foraminotomies) as well as both shoulders scoped ( i had limited range of motion on the left shoulder which is now vastly improved) despite the surgeries, i still had the pain.
However, angina pain can come in many different shapes and sizes and some people have only right-sided pain. I would put a hold on the running until you have an opportunity to see your doctor.
I have DDD and spondylosis of my spine, especially the lower back and neck. Also with some stenosis. I am still working and BELIEVE ME IT IS DIFFICULT! I am on several meds for this and go to a pain clinic that is overworked and has little time for me. My lower back is covered thru workmans' comp while the rest is my insurance. There are not many Drs' that want to deal with workmans comp. Also I can not just talk about my pain in general terms since it is my entire back.
csf leak was suggested so I layed flat for 3 days and the increadible pressure lessened as did the facial numbness and disequalibrium and now I am left with the ringing and neck/skull pain w/cracking and grinding noises. Somedays are better then others where my head feels so heavy and just aches. I have been having PT for 2 months with no improvement and have a neurologist appointment in 2 weeks (I have been waiting 3mo). I am 29 and pmh of mvp and tmj.
This seemed to do the trick this time, the pain was gone. After the patch was removed, i rested the shoulder for about three weeks and returned to exercise. Everything went fine for a month and there it goes again. The pain is back. I cannot seem to get rid of it! It is the most frustrating injury I have ever had. Im at the point if there is a surgery out there that can fix this I will do it and go through the rehab just to rid of the problem!!!
After seeing my personal doctor, a chiropractor, a physical therapist, and an orthopedic surgeon, I still don't have answers to the chronic pain I have in my neck/shoulder area. (Bottom of my neck/trapezius area) It started out as just a sore neck, but over the years, it has worsened into feeling almost like a pinched nerve I am 19 years old and have had the same pain in my neck for the past 5 or so years. It started when I was working in a restaurant and was on my feet for 6+ hours a night.
There is a slight grinding or crackling noise accompanied by slight discomfort (but not much pain). Sometimes after a long time sitting in one place, my neck aches a little along the vertebrae. Also, when I palpate the spine, it feels like the vertebra are slightly displaced at one location. I have also had crackly ankle bones for some time (they crack when I walk or run)..they are not at all painful. I also get the sleepy leg and foot syndrome a lot when I'm not moving around.
I had surgery on my neck to remove a sebaceous gland a simple procedure I thought, but I have had chronic nerve pain ever since my face hurts, my neck, sometimes my shoulder and my hand feels numb. Nothing I take removes the pain. Any ideas?
