Narcolepsy with sleep apnea

Common Questions and Answers about Narcolepsy with sleep apnea

narcolepsy

Avatar n tn t have sleep apnea but it was narcolepsy. He never told me what I needed to do about it. Do you also know if people with this disorder have periods of sleep walking. I have walked in my sleep from time to time since I was a child but it seems to have suddenly multiplied in the last few years. I am now 56 and have had some very life changing events in my life during these last 3-4 years. I am wondering if these traumatic events could have caused the sleep walking to increase. I stay exhausted.
Avatar m tn Again, only a sleep study can show what is going on. Narcolepsy can also indicate sleep apnea and potentially cataplexy. I waited 18 years before talking to a doctor about my paralysis and one month later, I learned I have sleep apnea. Who know what 18 years of severe sleep apnea did to my heart, brain and organs. It would be worth your time to speak with an MD. The longer that apnea goes untreated, the more damage occurs to the body. Best of luck!
Avatar f tn Both sleep apnea and narcolepsy are so different from person to person. My husband has them both but was very atypical till he had a sleep study and found a good doc who recognized what was wrong with him. His narcolepsy got worse as he aged (he is retired now for nearly 4 years) but his sleep apnea was always very bad and it made it hard to be suspicious of him having narcolepsy due to the fact his sleep apnea was and is so bad.
Avatar f tn I have had narcolepsy (and sleep apnea) for a long time. I had had three bariatric surgeries over the past 14 years, and my drs have wondered if some of my meds are not being absorbed properly or at the right rate, yet no one has done any kind of 'test' to determine that. I have tried everything possible for my narcolepsy---the ritalin patches, elixir ritalin.......etc, provigil, other meds....and of course xyrem. I take dextroamphetamine daily, even though it does litte...
Avatar m tn I have undergone a sleep study, that's my only qualification to comment, that and a long life's experience... and old guy. I read you do not suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnea.. look right and while I don't recall the % time in REM needed to be rested in the morning, you must have been given the number. In my case I was told I was marginally well rested relative to test results, but do suffer from mild sleep apnea.
Avatar n tn You might want to inquire about having a full sleep study to rule out sleep apnea and/or narcolepsy. The sleep paralysis, hallucinations, and daytime sleepiness are hallmarks of narcolepsy. Narcolepsy isn't just suddenly collapsing in a state of sleep. I tell you this not as a medical professional, but as a person with narcolepsy. Best wishes.
Avatar f tn So my 8 year old son has had 4 sleep study been diagnosed with sleep apea, with narcoleptic symptoms. He sleeps all the time and has cataplexy episodes. He is over weight (142lbs) and eats healthier than most children. He is always tired so he don't do too much active stuff though I am constantly encouraging him to go ride his bike or got to the park. He has been on a cpap machine for 6 months with no improvement.
Avatar f tn t been doing so well, having a hard time dealing with things... but, I was just wondering, if narcolepsy is a common thing with Chiari 1, or if any of you happen to have it? I have tried to do some googling on it but, I haven't found too much on it.. most everything I found is on apnea.
1745492 tn?1320198340 My husband was diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea and narcolepsy about 5 years ago and the narcolepsy is under control with 200 mg of Provigil. He had hypnogogic hallucinations, body jerks when falling sleep, imaginary conversations with no one, talked in his sleep, fell asleep driving, talking and even in activities you'd never imagine a male would fall asleep. He appears to always have had it since about puberty but it got worse as his sleep apnea did.
Avatar m tn Sleep apnea Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder in which your breathing temporarily stops during sleep due to blockage of the upper airways. These pauses in breathing interrupt your sleep, leading to many awakenings each hour. While most people with sleep apnea don’t remember these awakenings, they feel the effects in other ways, such as exhaustion during the day, irritability and depression, and decreased productivity.
Avatar f tn I've had horrible fatigue for over two years now. I've had the million dollar workup- so far it's not shown anything conclusive. A few months ago, my Doctor started me on provigil, because I finally told him I was afraid my constant need for sleep would cause an accident at work. At that point, I had stopped driving. I HATE not driving!!! I finally had a sleep study D/T RLS, which I've had my whole life with no real problems.
Avatar f tn Quix: Sorry about the invisible thing....I'm just feeling sorry for myself today....Some days are better than others, I guess....I thank you for trying....I promise I will try and think of something to ask you that you do know.....lol.... Plus, I need to give myself another swift kick in the a** because it could be worse, right? Smitty: I did some research online and spoke with my Neuro about the Sleep Apnea thing...I have CENTRAL sleep apnea which has nothing to do with snoring....
Avatar f tn Narcolepsy, how to find the severity of this sleep disorder? I am helping my friend with his disability claim. He has PTSD also and is not able to discuss the Narolepsy with doctors or me or anyone. How can I show the severity of his Narcolepsy. He goes out of way to look normal everytime he has an evaluation for mental stability. He has sleep Apnea #12 CPAP nightly. He is not able to tolerate the Narcolepsy medication. throat clossed, tongue swale, stomach blew up, stayed in toilet.
Avatar f tn I was diagnosed with sleep apnea when I was 14. I always thought being dog tired even with using my cpap machine every night was normal. Now I have a two year old and I need to figure this out. I can sleep 12 hours and still feel like I have no energy, everything feels like it's in slow motion for the first four hours IM awake, if someone tries to wake me up I either won't hear them or I hear them but cannot force myself to wake up.
Avatar f tn t appear as often or as severe. I looked up narcolepsy, and it said that they sleep about 15 minutes and awake refreshed. I usually wake myself after a few seconds and never feel refreshed. I have very little energy and have tried changing my diet, drugs, and I have low thyroid which is well managed. When I fall asleep, even for a few seconds, I am dreaming immediately, sometimes talking or talking as I wake up. Can someone please help me-I'm getting really scared.
Avatar n tn I finally went in for a sleep study and was diagnosed with narcolepsy! Narcolepsy is really rare, but at least a sleep study will rule out or confirm narcolepsy, sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, and probably other conditions as well. Good luck!
886699 tn?1270779744 m surprised they diagnosed you with CFS on top of sleep apnea; sleep apnea is one of the diagnoses of exclusion listed for CFS. Which is to say, sleep apnea is one of the diagnoses that are supposed to be ruled out in cases of chronic fatigue (the symptom) before CFS (the syndrome) is diagnosed. I suppose that doesn't apply in cases where the sleep apnea is being treated and the chronic fatigue still persists?
Avatar f tn I experience this! I feel like my body is so tired i could die. I know that sounds dramatic and I'm not going to die..but that's what it feels like to me. I recently watched a video about a pots dr talking about how we don't sleep well and that may be a reason why. He mentioned that our body overreacts to any stress and when we go through REM sleep our body stresses out and we wake up. He said we don't always realize it when we wake up.
Avatar m tn From your history it appears he has narcolepsy and is on therapy. He also has obstructive sleep apnea, for which he is not using the CPAP. Sleep apnea can cause variations in heart rate. And he should try to start using the pressure ventilation. The heart rate and the arousals you mentioned are not in the normal range. Masks can give a claustrophobic feeling to certain individuals. He could start by trying them for very short periods and then increase the timing as he gets more comfortable.
Avatar n tn He now has a considerable amount of central sleep apnea and is being removed from Xyrem to prove that the apnea is indeed coming from the drug. He was diagnosed with narcolepsy, but I have never been real convinced of that because he has always been sleep deprived and depressed. The depression he would not admit until just the last year, and with him it is an "off-limits" subject. Now that he is on Medicare, the cost for the Provigil and Xyrem is more than a major house payment.
871962 tn?1244730028 Think about adding medications, treatments and other issues relating to narcolepsy and hypersomnias to your sleep tracker. Insomnia and sleep apnea may be common sleep disorders, but not the only ones.
Avatar f tn Frequent awakenings are a hallmark of several disorders, including sleep apnea and narcolepsy. If you find yourself waking up with headaches, having cold sweats or feeling out of breath, apnea is a real possibility. Try sleeping on your side and if you have a stuffy nose, get some afrin to use only at night. I have narcolepsy and had pretty much identical symptoms to yours. It's not like on TV. Best wishes. If you have further questions feel free to ask!
14287919 tn?1434470794 I am a fifteen year old female, and I consecutively experience a large amount of fatigue and sleepiness during the day, which started about a year to a year and a half ago. I am wondering if this possibly could be caused by SA or any other sleep disorder. I typically go to bed at around 9:30-10:30 PM and feel like I "sleep very well", but in the morning (around 7 - 8 am) I don't feel refreshed or awake.
Avatar m tn blood work done (CBC, glucose, etc.) and also have a sleep study done. If you have sleep apnea, it means that you stop breathing while sleeping and thus your body wakes you up during the night. It may be just a few seconds you are awake and so you wouldn't notice it. When I got married almost six years ago, I told my husband that I was pretty sure he had sleep apnea. He didn't think he did at first. Then he said he might have it but that it was really mild if he did.
3184083 tn?1347402143 I have not heard ne reports of this, but it could be u r more tired then u think with the sleep apnea and are falling asleep...weird that u do not feel tired tho....hmmm.... I wonder if a C-Pap will help with that...have they suggested one for u with the low oxygen saturation levels?
