Avatar n tn See a sleep center. Recurrent "Bells Palsy," memory problems, insomnia symptoms, chronic pain, and twitchy feelings in muscles are actually very characteristic of narcolepsy with cataplexy, and it can be exacerbated by the hormone shifts that happen with menstrual cycles. In fact, often times, people don't have "Bells Palsy," but cataplexy. Viruses and some vaccines (namely the H1N1) can actually precipitate this, but it can happen seemingly in random fashion, too.
Avatar f tn are you able to wake up and remember your dreams. (Again these symptoms like MS symptoms are sporadic, they come and go over time.) Several times in the past 6 years I have woken up and been crying because the dream was just so real. (So less than 10 times in 6 years. You can see that it may be very sporadic.) Auditory: I have noticed (and last week was very bad) that when I lay down to sleep I hear other sounds.
729135 tn?1247495402 Sometimes, it can be difficult to accurately diagnosis a condition when all the pieces of the puzzle do not fit quite right and symptoms overlap. Over time, diagnoses sometimes change when additional evidence or symptoms appear. Regarding genetic testing for narcolepsy, positive test results indicate a susceptibility to narcolepsy but do not definatively diagnose narcolepsy. Positive genetic tests results are used to support a clinical diagnosis of narcolepsy.
Avatar n tn i saw a show yesterday about narcolepsy and they mentioned a vaccination was given to a 13 year old girl and 2 hours later she was experiencing cataplexly (a paralyzing catatonic state that is a symptom of narcolepsy) but they did not say which vaccination.
1745492 tn?1320198340 My husband was diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea and narcolepsy about 5 years ago and the narcolepsy is under control with 200 mg of Provigil. He had hypnogogic hallucinations, body jerks when falling sleep, imaginary conversations with no one, talked in his sleep, fell asleep driving, talking and even in activities you'd never imagine a male would fall asleep. He appears to always have had it since about puberty but it got worse as his sleep apnea did.
Avatar f tn Hi, I am a 28 yr old female, I had an ablation for AVNRT about 5 years ago and continue to have symptoms. My heart rate is usually around 140 and my blood pressure is usually 150/100. I take cardizem and bystolic but have not had any relief. My holter showed that I have episodes of a junctional rhythm that produce symptoms. I was hospitalized for 5 days not too long ago and my heart rate was sinus tach. at about 140-150.
Avatar f tn //www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/narcolepsy/symptoms-causes/syc-20375497 My sister in law as I said takes medication that allows her to be functional during the day and go to work and drive and all of that important stuff. I do know she also has started wearing a cpap mask at night (oxygen). I guess I'm wondering if you don't have two different things going on. I have also been in a situation of a hormonal imbalance and produced naturally too much estrogen.
Avatar f tn t mention it but the second most commonly associated symptoms of Narcolepsy is Cataplexy, this basically causes sudden loss of muscle tone, weakness and loss of voluntary muscle control. IF you don't have a specific medical explanation, it's 'possible' for you to also be experiencing mini cataplexic attacks to explain the muscle and foot lift/drop issues......I would highly recommend you consider consulting with a health care provider that specialises in Narcolepsy.

Avatar f tn I have narcolepsy and also experience tingling/numbness is my hands and feet. Although no study has been done (none that I found anyway) there could be a connection. If you are like me, sleeping at night does not come easily. The inability to fully relax and sleep may have something to do with the nerves running down the arms and legs to become overstimulated. That's my best guess, which seems more logical than anything my doctors have come up with. Best of luck.
Avatar n tn Hi, narcolepsy and sleepwalking are different sleep disorders. Narcolepsy is characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness, sleep paralysis, cataplexy where the person has episodes of loss of muscle function while awake, hypnagogic hallucinations and automatic behavior. It can however be regulated with medications. So, ensure to take them regularly and follow up with your doctor. Regards.

Avatar n tn I also again do think it would be pertinent for you to reach out to your primary care providers office regarding your symptoms and concern of family history of diabetes and heart problems. These are things that could be looked into as well, but that would have to come from their office. I do not do any testing for alternative causes.

Avatar m tn It occurs frequently throughout my day and randomly in different places on my body (i.e. ribs, shoulder, upper and lower arms, fingers, upper and lower legs and sometimes my head). I'm also always fatigued, sleepy and low energy, but I keep myself moving and motivated. I have been seeing a sleep specialist who diagnosed me with Narcolepsy (Polysomnograph and MSLT both suggestive of narcolepsy i.e.

Avatar n tn ve been reading about narcolepsy, and although my sleep study did not indicate anything about it, I find one of its symptoms prevalent in my experience. Often, I seem to dream right when I fall asleep - not after the 90 minutes it's supposed to take to reach REM. I know this is true because sometimes I'll wake up only about a half hour after falling asleep, having already dreamt. Does anything other than narcolepsy cause this?
Avatar m tn Sometimes hypersomnia may be other sleep disorders such as narcolepsy, sleep apnea, and restless leg syndrome. Your symptoms may be linked to depression. You should consult a psychologist for a complete medical and psychological workup. Do keep us posted about your progress. Take care!

I have read recently that Narcolepsy has been determined to be auto-immune in nature, and wonder if the presence of one or both of these disorders in my genetics was the cause of my Narcolepsy. Has there been any research done on the subject?
1764925 tn?1682604632 hence the doctors have tried to rule out narcolepsy, which causes excessive sleepiness. Narcolepsy is characterized by excessive day time sleepiness, sleep paralysis, cataplexy where the person has episodes of loss of muscle function while awake, hypnogogic hallucinations and automatic behavior. Narcolepsy is diagnosed by the sleep onset REM episodes (SOREMs), wherein the person goes into the dream phase or REM cycle soon after sleep onset.
535822 tn?1443976780 A new review published in the journal Public Library of Science ONE confirms that Pandemrix, a swine flu vaccine produced by drug giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), is responsible for causing an up to 1700 percent increase in narcolepsy among children and teenagers under 17 years of age. Based on their findings, a cohort of scientists has determined that narcolepsy rates increased significantly following mass vaccination campaigns with Pandemrix.
Avatar f tn I am diagnosis with narcolepsy and have had symptoms for 5 years now. I have been taking 500 mg. of nuvigil for over 2 years. Plus, 60 mg of adderall a day. My symptoms have slowed down a little, but I have to take 2 naps a day and not drive anywhere. I have sleep studies twice a year and it seems to get worse each time. Its very aggravating to me! It seems like something would help. I see a team of specialists at Vanderbilt, but I need something else, but what? Anyone have any suggestions?
612876 tn?1355514495 The sleep specialist said that narcolepsy and dysautonomia are mediated in some of the same parts of the brain, and for reasons that aren't yet completely understood, people who have one tend to have higher rates of the other than healthy people. He said that this will make treatment of both disorders more complicated, obviously. But I am just so excited to have an answer finally!
Avatar m tn It sounds very much like narcolepsy, which causes symptoms extremely similar to MS.
