narcolepsy

729135 tn?1247495402 Over time, diagnoses sometimes change when additional evidence or symptoms appear. Regarding genetic testing for narcolepsy, positive test results indicate a susceptibility to narcolepsy but do not definatively diagnose narcolepsy. Positive genetic tests results are used to support a clinical diagnosis of narcolepsy. We recommend that you speak with your doctor regarding your symptoms and test results as well as to discuss the most appropriate course of treatment for your specific situation.
Avatar n tn I have recently been diagnosed with narcolepsy. For years, I have suffered from EDS muscle weakness that has become worse as I have aged (mid-40's). In the beginning, I blamed it all on being single and burning the candle at both ends (20's); then being a new parent (30's) and then being a single mom to a child with narcolepsy and a preteen (now 40's). I was told I have mild cataplexy.
Avatar m tn Hypersomnia is sometimes misdiagnosed as narcolepsy where a person experiences a sudden onset of sleepiness. The causes can be genetic, brain damage or medical disorders such as clinical depression, uremia and fibromyalgia. Sometimes hypersomnia may be other sleep disorders such as narcolepsy, sleep apnea, and restless leg syndrome. Your symptoms may be linked to depression. You should consult a psychologist for a complete medical and psychological workup.
Avatar n tn Would many CFS sufferers be classified narcoleptic if they took the appropriate test? Narcolepsy leads back to hippothalmus and lack of production of hypocretin/orexin(?). Seems like all things lead to hippothalmus. Thank you!
Avatar n tn One of the first things to do is to get what is called an hbA1c test, which is used for diabetic screening. High glucose levels are the most common reason for this kind of sleepiness. A work-up by a speciality called an endochronologist is also in order. Another possibility is a disturbance of what is called the "circadian clock" which determines sleep cycles. Daily exposure to sunlight for 45 minutes at the same time often straightens this out.
Avatar n tn Really!!! Oh I'm totally having that test then if it's just a blood test!
Avatar n tn Hi all , I am pregnant 8 weeks and my doctor gave me a blood test for genetic problem after a month. Who have experienced the same test and how long does it takes to get the results .

Avatar m tn First of all, I'm sorry the doctor who ordered your testing didn't go more in depth in explaining the results to you. The information I'm going to give you here is based strictly upon the diagnostic criteria for different conditions; doctors use a combination of test results and diagnostic guidelines AND clinical expertise to reach diagnosis and treatment decisions, so there is no guarantee that this information pertains to your case in particular.
Avatar f tn Although the pt has RLS and PLMS, the arousal associated with these do not likely explain EDS- given a short overall sleep and REM latency, consider narcolepsy clinically. I had 156 arousals, 110 spontaneous, the rest due to limb movement. I also spent most of my sleep time in sleep stages 1 and 2, whith REM episodes scattered randomly. I had no time in stage 3, and when I had REM sleep it was from wake to REM with no progression through the other cycles.
Avatar m tn myoclonic seizures and Cataplexy sound similar. I have had so many test. All neg. My falls are sudden without warning. Sometimes it follows anger or laughing. But sometimes it seems to be light reflecting. I usually crumble down. I am aware of my surrounds but can not feel my body. I can not move a muscle or talk. I couldn't even tell you if i am breathing. It can last 30 sec to a 1 minutes or more.
589816 tn?1332976771 This is evident in the Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT). Narcolepsy is characterized by excessive day time sleepiness, sleep paralysis, cataplexy where the person has episodes of loss of muscle function while awake, hypnogogic hallucinations and automatic behavior. It can however be regulated with medications. So, ensure that he has them regularly and follow up with your doctor. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar f tn I am assuming you had an overnight sleep test along with an MSLT nap test to receive this narcolepsy diagnosis. Did you have any other sleep disorders show up? Do you have episodes of cataplexy? My sleep doctor is one who (in general) doesn't entertain a diagnosis of narcolepsy until any other sleep disorders are therapeutically treated, as long term sleep disorders can mimic narcolepsy in some respects.
Avatar f tn I was reading up about it and this lead me to read about Narcolepsy as Cataplexy is a unique symptom to this condition. I read about the symptoms and I am now afraid that I may be suffering from it. I have very vivid and sometimes lucid dreams and I wake up almost every hour of the night for short spans of time. Sometimes I cannot tell my dreams from reality and I often hear noises and see things during the night that aren't really there.
Avatar f tn i was wondering if i should be tested for narcolepsy, or if diagnosed with narcolepsy would they prescribe me to something similar to adderrall? if this were the case, being tested would not matter much if they would give me the same medications anyways. I just dont want to be misdiagnosed and on the wrong medication for the rest of my life.
Avatar m tn Yes, narcolepsy can result in disturbed nighttime sleep. Narcolepsy can only be diagnosed with a multiple sleep latency test during the day (usually preceded by an all night sleep study). Dr.
1745492 tn?1320198340 My husband was diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnea and narcolepsy about 5 years ago and the narcolepsy is under control with 200 mg of Provigil. He had hypnogogic hallucinations, body jerks when falling sleep, imaginary conversations with no one, talked in his sleep, fell asleep driving, talking and even in activities you'd never imagine a male would fall asleep. He appears to always have had it since about puberty but it got worse as his sleep apnea did.
11941637 tn?1422287346 s or Lupus, has also been diagnosed with or shown symptoms of Narcolepsy. I have read recently that Narcolepsy has been determined to be auto-immune in nature, and wonder if the presence of one or both of these disorders in my genetics was the cause of my Narcolepsy. Has there been any research done on the subject?
Avatar n tn The causes can be genetic, brain damage or medical disorders such as clinical depression, uremia and fibromyalgia. Sometimes hypersomnia may be other sleep disorders such as narcolepsy, sleep apnea, and restless leg syndrome. 1764925 tn?1682604632 There is more of REM sleep in your nighttime sleep study; hence the doctors have tried to rule out narcolepsy, which causes excessive sleepiness. Narcolepsy is characterized by excessive day time sleepiness, sleep paralysis, cataplexy where the person has episodes of loss of muscle function while awake, hypnogogic hallucinations and automatic behavior.
Avatar f tn be consistent with MS, but the doctors made the decision that we would follow that up in six months with another MRI. They are now suggesting that his problem is narcolepsy and cataplexy. We have been told to follow-up with a neurologist and have another, more specific sleep study. It takes weeks to get these appts, so now we wait. Do you know of anything that can be done to help a child with TS and possible Narcolepsy?
Avatar f tn Maybe you need to talk to your PCP about having a sleep latiencey test. Well testthe kind of sleep you are in while you sleep can test for Narcopelsy how long has this been a problem? I have been diagnosed my self with narcolepsy. Can fall asleep any where anytime!
Avatar f tn ve already been diagnosed with Thyroid Hoshimotos, and on top of that Narcolepsy, the most commonly associated symptom of Narcolepsy is excessive daytime sleepiness, which probably why you been dx with Chronic Fatigue as well, the constant level of fatigue could genuinely account for the cognitive issues you've been experiencing.
Avatar m tn I have suffered from sleep disroders my whole life. When I was 10 years old I had a type of sleep apnea called Hypopnea. Every night would result in me seeing spiders and snakes and getting out of bed screaming and running away out of terror. After months of this happening I went to a sleep Dr and had a sleeo study done, they informed me of what I had and that my tonsils were blocking my airways.
