Namenda and glutamate

Common Questions and Answers about Namenda and glutamate

namenda

Avatar n tn No need to worry. I used to teach classes on different Alzheimer's Medical treatments/medicines and know these meds better than the reps that sold them. Namenda is an add on Alzheimer's medication use to help glutamate regulation in the brain. The standard dose in 20mg a day after titration, so taking three 5mg tablets is not a problem.
Avatar m tn Hey everyone, I have tried many different ocd drug therapies, but have yet to try a glutamate modulating therapy such as Memantine (Namenda), Riluzole (Rilutek), N-acetyl cysteine, or amantadine. If anyone has information on or experience with any of the above medications, would you please share that with me? I am desperate. Thanks so much.
585414 tn?1288941302 For that reason although my neurologist considered it I was not allowed to take Namenda for its usage on tardive because it would act against the glycine and make it less effective as they work in an opposite manner.
Avatar m tn It is thought to achieve this by affecting certain neurotransmitters in the brain. Phenobarbital increases the activity of GABA and decreases the activity of glutamate in the brain. These actions help stabilize the electrical activity in the brain and keeps the nerve activity GABA in the brain in balance.Topiramate is very useful in migraine. If you are symptom free with it is best to continue it.
20003388 tn?1515166040 I'm just curious if anyone has been on Namenda and could tell me how long the initial brain fog lasted for you? I just started Namenda yesterday, 5 mg a day for 1 week then 10 mg a day in divided doses. I have memory issues and severe cognitive impairment. I was put on Namenda by a neurologist after a thorough examination. I expect the brain fog from starting Namenda up but am just trying to get a time frame for when I could expect the initial brain fog to wear off. Thanks everyone.
Avatar n tn What could be causing me to have all of them. I am under pretty good control as I take neurontin and namenda. Before I was put on namenda i was having rhizotomies almost every three months due to the excruciating pain.
499534 tn?1328704178 “Studies have shown that the body uses glutamate, an amino acid, as a nerve impulse transmitter in the brain and that there are glutamate-responsive tissues in other parts of the body, as well. Abnormal function of glutamate receptors has been linked with certain neurological diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease and Huntington's chorea. Injections of glutamate in laboratory animals have resulted in damage to nerve cells in the brain.
Avatar n tn I myself have recovered from schizoaffective disorder with the experimental antipsychotic glycine in Phase II FDA study a new form of antipsychotic called a glutamate antagonist that will promote a fuller recovery and not cause tardive dyskinesia (which I have in advanced forms) and diabetes. My case study will be published in a psychiatric journal. For the official study google "Dr. Javitt, glycine".
Avatar f tn My neighbors doctor prescribed fluoxetine and namenda before MRI being done.test came back no signs of alzheimers disease. Should she continue to take ? She is 80 years old somewhat forgetful nothing to make you say you can't function she is 80.
Avatar n tn He is on Namenda and Plavix, is it possible that Adderall could help with his short term memory loss. Before the accident he lived on his own.
382218 tn?1341181487 NMO-IgG binds to a protein that normally sops up excess glutamate from the space between brain cells. When NMO-IgG is around, this sponge-like action is blocked, allowing glutamate to accumulate. And too much glutamate can kill the cells that produce myelin - the protein that coats and protects neurons. The authors suggest that glutamate-induced damage to nerve cells and their insulating myelin coats might account for the neurological symptoms associated with Devic's disease.
Avatar m tn s caused retrovirus (think HIV), only not deadly of course. It only causes torture, low Natural Killer cell counts, and reduced immunity. I'm so happy a retrovirus was found for an otherwise unexplainable disease, but in the mean time, there is no treatment. Anyway, since being ill, the anxiety doesn't go away. The anxiety is not about anything. It never has been. Triggers are things that are fun, exciting, and stimulating. Stimulus in general. Loud Noise. Light (fluorescent).
Avatar f tn Rocephin: interesting stuff A new study conducted by a team of Indiana University neuroscientists demonstrates that GLT1, a protein that clears glutamate from the brain, plays a critical role in the craving for cocaine that develops after only several days of cocaine use.
483733 tn?1326798446 I read the article I've pasted in below. I know that I react to both of these. Have you eliminated these from your diet? Excitotoxins & Food in Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Saturday August 7, 2010 One of the many things that's blamed for symptoms of fibromyalgia (FMS) and chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), especially pain and mood symptoms, is an over-excited brain.
Avatar m tn I had Chinese food on Saturday and later that night I awoke to find my heart beat racing, could it be MSG or something else,Prior to the food I had 1.5 glasses of red wine and I went red in the face?is this normal .
Avatar m tn Chronic alcohol exposure is hypothesized to alter the normal balance between neuronal excitation and inhibition. A glutamate receptor modulator, Campral is believed to act on the biochemical systems that are involved in alcohol dependence. Campral interacts with neurotransmitter systems and is hypothesized to restore the normal balance.
Avatar f tn For 4 years I have done nearly nothing other than sit on the couch, watch tv, sleep, and surf the internet and for some of that time, attempt to work. Cooking and cleaning were just not ever done. Since taking the namenda, I have been more active - cook and clean some, have left the house more often but still only to grocery shop and get meds refilled. I have done some Xmas shopping this year, last couple of years I did none.
Avatar n tn With new technology and research they are figuring out exactly what goes on and how to target psychosis and with the help of science, technology, researchers and advocates such as myself who are working to promote these efforts I hope everyone will experience the full recovery I have.
Avatar f tn I took a neurotransmitter test and my levels of dopamine were barely normal on the low spectrum, my DOPAC (a byproduct I think of dopamine also a neurotransmitter) and my glutamate was normal, although I am on Abilify which might tweek those a bit. Several other neurotransmitters were terribly low like Norepinephrine, epinephrine, Serotonin, 5 HIAA,Taurine was too low to mention, and others out of 13 different transmitters they tested were low normal. This test is very interesting....
Avatar f tn She took 5mg nightly for 4 days and during that time she still had a headache, but no side effects. On the 5th day the headaches stopped, but now she's constantly nauseous and woozy. This has been going on for 4 days. Is this just a matter of her body adjusting to the drug?
Avatar m tn A newer generation of anti-psychotics, the glutamate antagonists in development will not cause diabetes or tardive dyskinesia and promotes a full recovery. I am on glycine a Phase II antipsychotic in FDA study that is a glutamate antagonist that has promoted a recovery that is according to my psychopharmocologist "as good as any FDA approved anti-psychotics or better". My study will be published soon in a psychiatric journal.
Avatar m tn I have been having soy sauce nightly for the past two-three weeks and have suddenly developed an occassional erratic heart rate that has been waking me from a sound sleep. Does anyone know if there is any correlation?
Avatar n tn Hi Margypops, Axona is a brand-new prescription therapy launched in March 2009 for the treatment of mild-moderate Alzheimer's disease. As Alzheimer's is marked by a decrease in glucose in the brain (the primary source of food for the brain), Axona acts by providing/metabolizing glucose in the body to act as an alternate source of food for the brain.
Avatar n tn she sometimes forgets who her family members are and asks when is she going home, and insists that we are all conspiring against her and lying to her!!! she becomes hostile at times and rude.. I am the basic caregiver.. the oldest granddaughter, my aunt helps out as this is alot of work.. she has chronic kidney infections and now, since her last hospitalization has lost the ability to walk byherself with her walker..
Avatar f tn She did a mini neuro/cognitive eval and said this may be something more than MS. Now she has prescribed Namenda XR for me. I googled it and it says it's for Alzheimers. I do have family that have/had dementia/Alzheimers. Does anyone else with MS take this??? Or do you know anyone with MS that takes it? From what I read, it makes symptoms worse with people who have MS. Sad face...
Avatar n tn My mom's medication regeime has had risperdal added to it. She is alteady on zoloff and the standards for alzeheimer's including namenda.
